Farewell, Granddad

Post by Nachtsider on Sat 7 May 2011 - 11:25

My maternal grandfather, formerly a hale and hearty old chap with an amazing zest for life, was never the same after a debilitating stroke that happened several years back. Despite being closely cared for by friends and family (myself included), he was barely able to maintain a satisfactory quality of life. Tonight, he passed away from respiratory failure, aged eighty-five.

Some might say it was a blessing, in light of how difficult his final months were. My rational side would agree, but it's currently being overshadowed by my emotional side - a state of affairs that's going to prevail for some time. The man was instrumental in raising me after my parents made their exit from my life. He was more a father than my actual father ever was. I'll miss him loads.

'Til we meet again, Granddad. Salut.

I suck at this sort of thing... finding words to say. Except that I have condolences, they're deep, and they're yours.

I know sometimes words can't do what a person is trying to say justice, or you can't even find the right words to say. This is one of those times. I'm deeply sorry for your loss, Nacht. You have my condolences. I'm happy that your grandfather got to live a long and happy life with you.

I know your pain. My grandfather passed this past Monday, also at age 85, though yours certainly was closer than I was to mine. The only advice I might give is that men that age have been role-models to which we should aspire, and that after an illness or hard couple of years, that they certainly have earned their place in the life beyond this one. It hurts to lose them, sure, but a better place is now theirs to call home.
Remember what he taught you and where you learned it, and pass it on. I think that's the most fitting tribute to such men.

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

Thanks everyone, especially those who've been in similar situations - my heart goes out to you, too. And don't give me any of that nonsense about platitudes; your condolences and commiserations mean a lot to me.

Burial's on Tuesday.

Hate to hear it Nacht. I've lost all my grandparents over the years it never gets any easier and it sounds like you lost more than just a grandfather. Best wishes. You know better than anyone how he would want you to handle this, I think.

My condolences Nacht, to you and your family. In so many of these cases the family gives up and lets strangers care for their loved one but it sounds as if your Grandfather was surrounded by his family all the way to the end. I am sure he appreciated that.

My condolences, Nacht. It's a damn shame that he's gone now, but always keep in mind the good things about him. From the sounds of it, he lived a good life, but the unfortunate truth is that all things, good or bad, come to an end eventually. Regardless, he was happy while he was alive, so remember that.

Re: Farewell, Granddad

Post by Nachtsider on Tue 10 May 2011 - 6:18

We released Granddad into Mother Earth's embrace today, with full honors befitting his generous, philanthropic existence. Grandma's normally stoic exterior, which she maintains even under the most trying conditions, cracked, if only for about twenty minutes. I'll be keeping a closer eye on her from now on out.

Part of me envied Granddad's grave; its emptiness was filled, unlike the void in my soul. Another other part of me doesn't want that emotional gap stopped up; it desires a perpetual reminder of what has been lost. A third part just feels likes getting shitfaced drunk tonight; this one looks like it might win.

To all who've posted here, you have my deepest thanks once again - those who've been bereaved, be it recently or otherwise, also have my profoundest sympathies.
