Themes and Devices

Post by JameyoftheMegacosmos on Thu 3 Nov 2011 - 21:42

Somehow, I feel like Gunslinger Girl has a few reccuring themes as well many other literary devices. Is there anyone who agrees with me?

If there ARE such themes, then I'd like to discuss.

What is it that truly makes us human?

How it is a country (or individual) can justify criminal activity in the name of national security.

My favorite theme of GsG is the ability of people (cyborgs, adults, villains) to rise above their savage surroundings and form relationships, even communities, in spite of the bizarre, disjointed reality of their existence.

domestic (public)security of Italy... My opera vocal teacher went Rome, Italy last month because of Giuseppe di stefano's memorial concert ... but suddenly!! riots were happening all over the places in Rome and it was very aggressive that bombs were exploded and tear gas spread all over the places. When I heard this , It reminded me that the riots and bombing in GSG is pretty convincing.

We could also apply the second question when it comes to the FRF.

Also, another theme I think is loyality vs. morality (maybe anohter word?). It's like choosing between what is loyal to something like the SWA and what is actually right.

Maybe another theme would be causes.

Several protagonists and even antagonists mostly fight because it's their job. But I think there are some who have much stronger causes.

I think it was start to be brought up a little in the end of the most recent volume of the manga.

There are a few questions I want to ask related to this, even though they may already be answered.

Why is Pinnochio's pendant a hog? Why could it not be another animal?

Is there a relation with the Orion story? With Tosca? Sayh that since they were both in the series.

JameyoftheMegacosmos wrote:Why is Pinnochio's pendant a hog? Why could it not be another animal?
The boar pendant does not factor into the manga...just the anime. I get the feeling the animation directors wanted both Triela & Pino to have a token of eachother to focus on until their climactic battle. Pinocchio has Triela's SIG (a gift from Hillshire in her eyes)...the Princess gets his pendant (which was a gift from Christiano of course).

Some lunacy from the dA page of 47ness.

So why a boar? Well, it's a very tough animal, prized during medieval hunts and factoring into the coat of arms of many noble families. Christiano is not decended from any ancient nobility but he clearly aspires to it, and might be expressing that sentiment by wearing a boar symbol.
Is there a relation with the Orion story? With Tosca? Sayh that since they were both in the series.
The explnation for Orion is right there in the Manga...Artemis accidentally kills her love Orion...just like Henrietta does to Giuseppe in Chapter 82.

Tosca was probably picked because Yu considers it a quintessential Italian opera and it allowed him to bring in the Castel Sant Angelo as a setting. The parallel may go deeper though. At the core of the Tosca story is a woman whose obsessive jealousy about her lover unravels the well-laid plans of everyone around her, eventually leading to all of their deaths.

I like the idea of people within a strict (oppressive?) organization striving to give a measure of freedom to those who are being used as tools of the government (cyborgs). (Jose and OC Fernando come to mind)
Also I enjoy reading about lines of convergence from people who normally don't have much to do with one another, yet express some similarities in their speech. In the following passages, I see both:
Henrietta: Triela, you speak to Elsa, don't you?
Triela: Not really, I suppose not more than I have to.
Henrietta: Um, I'm not good at talking.
Triela: Why bother? Elsa only cares about Lauro. Actually, to be honest with you Henrietta, I hate her!
Henrietta: You hate her, but you still try to help her?
Triela: Oh, I don't know. I think it's just too easy to ignore people you don't really like, you know? I guess I like the challenge.
Triela: And you know, speaking of people I don't like, you and
Claes used to be just like Elsa when you first came to the agency....
(later on at a bar)
Jose: We'll do it, (referring to accepting the mission Lauro proposed)
if nothing else, this will boost Henrietta's confidence.
Lauro: Hey Jose, tell me, do you always worry about the cyborg's like that?
Jose Yeah.
Lauro: So I guess all the rumors I've heard are true.
Jose: What rumors are those?
Lauro: Oh, you know....
Jose: Yeah, I know. You believe everything you hear?
(goes to drink and realizes his cup is empty, Lauro fills it)
Lauro: Uh here listen, I've seen the way you treat your cyborg.
I just can't stand guys who let themselves get too attached.
Jose: Well then, why did you invite one of them out for drinks?
Lauro: Because, I hate guys like you but I am curious, curious as to what makes a guy like you tick. It's easier to figure out what goes on in someone's head, after they've had a few drinks. Then I can decide if the person has any redeemable qualities. I believe everyone has a value somehow, even if you hate them. Even if I don't think like you, you seem like an ok guy, Jose.
Jose: Well, at least there's that....
Lauro: It's like Kennedy once said: 'let's not be blind to our differences'.
This series is so much more than action, it's multi-layered inter action.

A good deal of the Gunslinger Girl entry on that site was written by this forum's members...Robert Frazer, ElfenMagix & Danjo3 in particular, I'm sure there are others. There are already two threads that deal with this...the site itself & OC characters.

I think he was specifically asking about physical objects.

Claes' eyeglasses are probably the best example; a physical reminder of someone that has a lasting effect on the story despite only being in one chapter.

Triela's teddy bears are a big one. She starts out having contempt for them but as her character evolves she develops a fondness. On the first page of Chapter 50 she uses them as references for the passage of time.

When Triela modifies her shotgun (Chapter 60) it represents that she's made a major decision about her relationship with Hillshire.

Giuseppe's telescope ties Chapters 1 & 82 together.

There are plenty more. You ask some pretty specific questions...are you writing a paper on GsG and getting us to do all the work? Razz

In the TV Tropes site, there is said to be a Five-Man Band (which would be the Hero, the Lancer, the Samrt Guy, the Tough Guy, and the Chick). There is already one for the cyborgs, but I think the Pandian FRF could be considered as a Five-Bad Band, the opposite of the Five Man Band.

For me, I feel like this Five Bad Band for the FRF would be:

Big Bad- Christiano

The Dragon- Giacomo

Evil Genius- Franco or Flanca

Brute- Franco or Pinocchio

Dark Chick- Flanca or Pinocchio

What's your idea on this? And how would arrange the characters in this type of "Band"?

The Five Man band only applies for teams that work together. Franco, Flanca and Pinnochio do, but that's it. Even with the SWA it doesn't apply, as they mainly work in pairs (handler/cyborg) and this relationship affects how they work together in a group.
