What do you like most about your creations?

Post by tremec6speed on Sun 15 Apr 2012 - 2:58

I'm curious as to what aspect or element in your creations most appeal to you. Whether they be the fratellos or any other cast of characters you have made, feel free to expand on what is it about them that most interests you to the point of wanting to draw or write about them.

I feel we have really expanded and broadened the whole GSG world with our agents and tales, so if you want to put in a nut shell what stands out the most to you not only in terms of the players themselves but the what do you like most about the gist of your stories as well.
My first 2 fratellos, Helen and Salvatore Bataglia were originally a story plot device to an early Lauro and Elsa tale. I later developed them into people I would be interested in. Salvatore I like because he starts as an evil person worthy of the most heinous terrorist who later evolves into someone worthy of respect as he is reborn only after he exorcises his own internal hatred.

Helen is my weakest character in terms of general interest, simply because I have not yet found much to say about her other than she is able and true, longing for any affection or friendship, locked away in the restrictions, and extreme rules imposed by her handler. Vinson, Helen's father who's familial connection is unbeknownst to either, is someone I like but about as much as Helen which is to say a lot just not me favs. Razz His nature is similar to Helen: kind, quiet, cheerful, capable, etc.

Second fratello (2nd in terms the order in which they were made) Gunther and Ayden or Aydan
Ayden is interesting to me because of her being an experimental creature that was meant to be the answer to the possibility of the enemy becoming more powerful. The SWA anticipated the terrorist's greater capability for destruction in the near future. Also her being at the same time a project whose origins and true purpose was a secret even within the Agency is also an appealing idea to me. Lastly, what I like about her is her being normal at one point then having a nefarious hidden nature come out as a consequence of he creator, Dr, LaVenge's own plans. I imagine this makes her somewhat of an outsider even to the cyborgs themselves since she's a one-shot design, with no other like her in which to find commonalities and therefore comfort.

Finally yet foremost to me is Gunther Roghan DeSica. I like him most because he is my own version of Lauro DeSica. Being too young to be considered entry into the Agency, I like the idea that his very existence within this elite and secret organization is wrong even though he very capable. I also like the concept that not only was circumstance the cause of his being there, but also of his being paired up with the flawed experimental weapon (Ayden) resulting in a real Odd Couple.

He is mentally unstable, emotionally retarded and yet is of outstanding intelligence in the world of science and technology, plus his ability to imitate almost exactly and understand most of what he replicates usually the first time he witnesses seems cool to me as well. I see him as a mysterious man speaking little, showing virtually no emotion he bottles up feelings he cannot deal with under a quiet and almost robotic exterior.

I picture most conversations concerning him being said behind his back in the form of 'jokes' ridiculing his weirdness. Story-wise, I like his ultimate running away from the SWA reminding me some how of the movie One Flew Over the Coocoo's Nest, talking off never to be seen again.

Finally, I'd like to comment on my baddies The Phalanx. What I like most about them is that while they can be termed terrorists, they have no real mission per say, so they are not so much terrorists as techno-anarchists challenging those in power for the cheer hell of it and in particular, testing their own creations (mostly robots) against the cyborgs (and other inventions like Aydan) of the SWA.

Hmm... tough one, I enjoy working with Monty's grumpy seriousness, Jethro's impish sense of humor, the fact that I get to indulge my love of 1960's spy-fi, caper films and romantic 1920s/30s style adventure... among other things. I also quite enjoy trying to work within the limits of the universe (at least as I portray it); so keeping an eye on finances, Monty's issues of conditioning supply, the need to maintain secrecy and so-on.

Yes, I actually enjoy having restrictions and limits to work around and somehow solve problems within.

If I had to narrow it down however to one constant, I think the thing that keeps me interested in working with Jethro+Monty would actually simply be their relationship. I know it doesn't really take a front seat in my loner-pair's stories, but (at least for me, and I hope for the reader) it's always ticking along in the background: whether they be robbing a casino, staking out a remote airfield or slogging through the jungles of South America.

I have trouble seperating them in my own mind, so tend to think of Jethro AND Monty, almost as a single entity, rather than Jethro OR Monty. I hope neither seems to play second fiddle to the other, and while they are both capable of working independently, they work best together, their strengths covering the other's weaknesses (for example: I generally try to let Monty make the logical observations and Jethro those based on observations of people). On that note I enjoy working things so that things like Jethro's abilities to talk and paint are just as important as Monty being able to make out fine details at distance or knock someone's kidneys out through their ear-holes should she so wish.

As part of that there's also J+M's personal relationship. Both are emotionally closed people, Monty more obviously so, and while Jethro's good with people, he does so from a fairly detached position. As such, in terms of each other, they run a weird little loop of pretending to have a sexual relationship as part of their cover, whilst actually having a platonic one, but wishing it was somewhat less so... and neither being emotionally equiped to do anything about it. Jethro's position is of course further complicated by Monty effectively being physically locked at 14 years old (at least in my take on the GSG universe). Trying to communicate that through their, particularly Jethro's (as in a lot of cases it turns into Jethro does and Monty allows), actions it something I enjoy working into the story as well.

So yeah, while I really enjoy shooting J+M off to new and exciting parts of the planet, it's their relationship with each other (and I guess contrasting that with their interactions with those around them) that is the constant I like weaving through my work.

How successful that is of course I don't know, but the thought's there. Razz

I know I haven't produced nearly as much as many of the folks on here, but ultimately, I hope for John to be both a vessel for me to live vicariously through (because, let's face it, at this initial outset he's obviously an author-avatar whom I'm trying desperately to not make a Gary-Stu), and an outlet for a lot of the - for lack of a better term - "darker" elements of my personality. My fears, my desires to do things that I am bound to not do (everyone has those lurking SOMEWHERE), things like that.

The rest of the SRT are going to be based on people I know, as well as other facets of my personality, and I'll be working to expand and expound on these as the story progresses... hopefully, like Alfisti said, I can make it so that John and the SRT are inseperable, and only really work as a complete, cohesive unit. Time will tell...

While I did not crate an original charactrer like many others on the site I do think I can still answer the question due to the direction my own stories are headed. I created Great Escape to see if it was possible to slowly change the gunslinger girl universe in such a way to give the girls something of a happy ending. I enjoy the challenge of slowly changing things in such a way that they are believable and workable in the existing gunslinger girl universe. I spent a lot time trying to figure out just how the cyborg enhancements and conditioning medications would work so that the girls being able to survive without agency help would be believable. I also enjoy the research that has gone into the route the girls have taken and materials they aquire in an effort to reduce ass pulls. I do like where I've taken Tea as a forum original character but i can't say tehre was any great planning there on my part.

Originally I came up with the idea a while before I began writing ing and some day I would like to write original science fiction. So i thought I would try my hand at writing some fanfiction first before writing something original. Kinda figured if I could do this then maybe I could try my hand at something more original.

Also like Charon said it can be cathartic at times allowing for an outlet.

Fernando is the extension of me. Thus the character, the arrogance, the person who he is, the things he do, is from me in my younger days. It is easy for him to be written.

Rachel is a bit harder but she is also based on a real person, one who we shared a life of many years and continue to contact each other. Francesca is based from a real person and Melody Valentine. Juanita is also based on an old time friend, they all were, so drawing on their personas to create characters was easy. Drawing from out experiences also made it easy to make events flow in the series I write.

The conflict is self inflicted, but only because "Without no conflict, there would be no story" fit in the series. But things will eventually resolve - question is how.

Wow, reading the input as to what you enjoy is exactly why I feel we have expanded the GSG realm. Everyone brings something differnet to the table so to speak. The sexual tension in Jenthro and Monty is interesting for the reader to explore all the while being entertained in their adventures is great to read.
I never really thought of expressing from my inner self in what I have done (unless it's happening subconsciously) but The Officer's contributions make me wonder if I shouldn't dig deep and fashion my characters with more of myself in them. I can't help but feel it takes a lot of guts to do that.
I also to a certain point, see my fanfiction tales that mostly end up on the hard drive of my computer as a means improving my writing skills as well as for my own amusement. (I too want too write original stories)
As far as writing tales from people I've known is another idea I've played with, but as of yet do not have the 'cojones' (For those who don't speak Spanish, that's like saying the b@lls) to do that, I don't feel ready somehow and I'm not even sure why....

To be honest I think, to a greater or lesser extent, there will almost always be some facets of an author's (or people the author knows) personality in their characters. Even when making a concious decision to keep the characters seperate, how those characters are written will likely be coloured by how the author views that sort of person.

I assume this is the point at which someone comes and proves me wrong.

I'll admit I too would like to try my hand at original fiction... I've got a few ideas kicking around on the back burner, but nothing really going anywhere right now.

As a result I do tend to view fanfiction as a sort of training ground; somewhere to get my hand in, get feedback and improve. One of the upsides of fanfiction I think over going straight to original is that there's a ready-made audience to crit your work, rather than needing to scrounge one up from scratch Razz

I've done both original and fan fiction and I find the latter easier to develop ideas for since the world is already defined.

I'm not to sure what I like most to be honest. I cna't even remember my reasons for beggining writing FanFics in the first place, I just started writing one day after a couple of ideas popped into my head. After three pages, I screwed it up and threw it out because I can't write children and made my OCs second Gens. Perhaps that's what I like most, being able to create characters and situations, then deciding how they would act in said siruation.
By far my favorite character is Mercedes, which is a little ironic since I origonally planned to kill her off after a little time in Iraq (roadside bomb or something like that)
And I too am guilty of making characters with similar personality traits as myslef. I do also draw inspiration from my mates personalities.
It could also be another way to live my life sort of thing. I know that I'll never be able to cut it in the armed forces, kill poeple, work as a government agent, etc. So I write about such things instead. (Wow, I sound like I need to get out more, hey?)
