GSG Ending at 15 Volumes?

Post by Nuke is Good on Tue 28 Aug 2012 - 10:23

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-08-24/retailer/gunslinger-girl-manga-ending-at-15-volumes

The Japanese retailer Mangaoh lists the 15th volume of Yu Aida's action manga Gunslinger Girl as the final volume. According to Mangaoh, ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Comics imprint will ship the volume on December 17. The limited edition of the volume will bundle Libretto! II, the second full-color booklet after the first one that was included with the 10th volume.

With the way the story is going I guess it was bound to happen. The past few chapters had deaths going at Victory/Zeta Gundam speeds.

Makes sense. It still leaves the question of when it will end, exactly, in terms of chapters.

We're currently at 8 chapters for Volume 15. The most chapters in a volume has been 9 (Volume 13). So I expect we will have at most two more chapters (99 in August and 100 in September), which gives Yu time to finish Libretto II and Dengenki Comics time to put the tankōbon together for the December release.

Damn it, we've been reading this for so many time!! I'll miss GSG, and, however it ends, it will be a little sudden...

I mean,
Spoiler:
Henrietta, Jose, Triela and Hillshire died in a few chapters, and I bet Petra will die, too

It's really sad. I can't figure out how will he end the series in two or three more chapters. By the current events it was obvious that we were heading to and end, but I wasn't expecting something so quick.

Hell, when I heard 'bout this I knew there would be an outcry here. Yeah, it's sad but all good things must come to an end. The good thing is that even though GsG ends, as far as new material, this place can go on an' keep it alive. You now have the complete story. From now on is the time for what ifs an' for rebirths with new characters, or even location an' mission changes. Hell, just be creative. The end of one thing doesn't mean the end of all. It's just the close of one chapter an' the beginnin' of another, the end of one adventure an' the beginnin' of a new. What new excitement lays 'round the next corner, eh? Believe you me we will find out an' though our paths may be different no one should be left disappointed in their own new adventure.

"Tomorrow is the most important thing in life. Comes
into us at midnight very clean. It's perfect when it arrives and it puts
itself in our hands. It hopes we've learned something from yesterday." ~ John Wayne

It is to this high purpose that I now call you, Fans of Gunslinger Girl. I ask you to stand together, in the face of difficulty and of judgment, so that we may further the great and noble characters that we have so long accompanied on their paths through life.

The task will be hard. There may be dark days ahead. But, if, one and all, we keep resolutely faithful to it, ready for whatever service or sacrifice it may demand, then we shall prevail.

I guess for me, while I certainly share everyone's sentiments feeling sad about the story's end, when my fav. character Lauro got plugged, I was in the mind frame that since the show had lost what is in my opinion the coolest character, I was sorta ready to accept the end from that point on....

Aside from being pissed off about the slaughter of so many excellent characters, Im also a little disappointed that we wont get to see more of the gen2s (Gattonero, Fleccia and Soni). I was hoping Aida would use them to keep the story going. Adding them to the line-up seems kind of pointless now.

Very much agreed, be happy that its ending whilst we still like it, rather than becoming a shambling, hateful mess which doesn't know when to stop.

Personally I don't blame Yu for wrapping it up (though he's still got quite a lot of wrappint up to do in a short period of time), the bloke's been at the same thing for twelve years, I could understand him wanting a change of pace. I'll be interested to see what he does next. Look on the upside, with some of the Gen 1s still around, a group of Gen 2s and still quite a lot of staff: unless he drops a massive bombshell in the last chapter or so he's leaving us plenty to go on with.

Look, I've only recently started to watch and read GSG. But I still want to see it go on. Its a great series, from a newbies point of view, its easy to get right into and never wants to let you go. I think the long time fans would appreciate it if we kept it alive.

There are many series that have ended long ago. Take Sherlock Holmes, for instance, or M.A.S.H. Both still have dedicated fansites to this day, and discussion of them continues. GSG shall be no different. Very Happy

GsG discussed for centuries? Meh, why not. In a hundred years, people will look back and say, "What the hell is this? THe quality of thei show is shit!" and the hipsters will say, "but you should watch it for the engaging story." To which the other will reply, "Away with you cruel hipster, you are bannished!" and the hipster will shrug and say... actually, I got nothing. I can only BS for so long.

Agreed. That sort of thing isn't unheard of in Japan. Perhaps that should be added as an alternate dictionary definition for "shonen". By the sound of things, I had already felt that there was a 50/50 chance that the series would end with volume 15. I was also on the fence about whether I wanted it to continue on or not. On one hand, I love this series, and would love for it to keep going. On the other hand, what you just said would have been a potential con. Guys, this isn't the end of the world. As Nachtsider said, a community like this one can still exist if the series it's centered around has ended. In fact, I'd say it's all the more important that this forum keeps going. If a series is still discussed a decade later, then that's a testament to how great the series was. Let's keep the discussion alive, so that GsG can have that kind of legacy. Don't worry, there'll continue to be plenty of opportunity to nergalshnoof, and, of course, schmendaldorf!!!!

Now I'm wondering whether the 6th Seven Seas omnibus will go back to the 3 volume format, and contain volumes 13-15, or if volume 15 will be released on its own later? I guess we'll have to wait and find out.

For some reason, I feel like I'm giving Mr. Aida free advertising now. I feel unclean.

I think the anime was cancelled, and the manga supposedly entered into its final story arc a while back, but since it's Bleach we're talking about, I'm just going to assume that final story arc will either not be truly final, or that the world will be taken over by ostriches before it finally ends. The point is, I'm quite fond of GsG, and I'd rather it not turn into a money grabbing abomination that is still going long after the story it was meant to tell has been told in its entirety. Actually, in the case of Bleach, Kudo most likely spent a great deal of time inventing ways to take as long as possible to tell that story in the first place, and when all else failed, there was always filler. Of course he'd keep the series going afterwards. Did anyone else feel like they were watching or reading an excruciatingly long Rocky training montage at times with Bleach? There, I hope I just saved some people hundreds of pointless hours.

Saved me a lot. I got a frined trying to convince me to try and watch all of it. But I'm sorry, if there's and insurgency and a whole bunch of people turn to the dark side a royally F shit up, and there is ont a SINGLE dead person, I tend to lose interest due to the high improbability of the event . And they all fully healed . Just nuke them with a Tsar bomb and be done with it. Maybe I should nuke my friend instead

Pretty much... I think I lost actual interest in it after about episode 26 or something when Rukia stopped being a main character... continued on after that because it was a decent half hour of brain-out entertainment per week and then it just became habit. Of course eventually it hit a massive patch of filler, someone baked a cake and it was at about that point I threw my toys out of the cot and gave in.

The final episode of Season 16 (#366 in total) was broadcast on March 27th. However, there is speculation a 17th season could be green-lit.

Of course, if you want an anime that goes on forever, that would be Naruto | Naruto: Shippuden, which is just about to cross the 500th episode point.

Quoted for truth. Once she was imprisoned by the Soul Society towards the end of Season One and Season Two started the long, drawn-out attempt to rescue her, I bailed.

At the risk of sounding corny, thank you Mr. Aida for indirectly bringing us together.
Even if all of us never meet, at least we do in this cool forum! Oh and do continue the J&M stories Alfisti, I dare say you have several fans! head bang
I wonder if the anime will be able to catch up and get to the ending as well....

Call me a sceptic, but I don't think so. It would be nice, but I doubt it.

The anime probably shouldn't be referred to in the singular sense. We got one adaptation for the first two volumes, and another one for the next few. If we were to get a continuation of the anime, it would probably be done by yet another company. I'd love for it to happen though. On another note, I wonder if Yu Aida plans on starting another project. If so, maybe we can have a board dedicated to it.
