GsG: Eternal Solace: Technology

Post by Three Dog on Tue 9 Oct 2012 - 6:25

As I am sure many of you may have guessed from the title, this is a thread for the various technologies availible in GsG: Eternal Solace.

For starters, we know that you can check you E-mails and take photos with your glasses, as well as being voice activated. So, computer and camera technolgy have become fairly compact and voice regognision software is pretty good at that point too.

Secondly, Frost has already established coil guns (Guass guns) as an available technology. Knowledge on how to construct the weapons is fairly common, however only richer nations have access due to the great cost. Yumi's guass rifle is bolt action, single shot, with enough power per capacitor battery for 3 shots.

RCS-MK15 (Reactive Combat Suit) - Skintight suit designed for maximum armor with maximum comfort. Built in hydration, cooling, and comm systems. Additional combat visor for concealment of the the face, as well as HUD capability.

Craager-Mantel MPAS (Multi Purpose Assault System) - Heavy weapon, combining 3 weapons into one. Features an upper mounted railgun for long range or anti structure use, a dual barreled .50 cal HMG for standard combat, and a Shotgun/Munitions launcher which fires standard shells, and special rounds.

I probly don't have to tell folks to feel free to throw in their own technological ideas, yeah? Razz

Considering the use of my characters, I will not be using such weapons. Just the old fashion ballistic hardware that they have had all these years.

The guardian has a point, coil guns are better than powder weapons for stopping power simply for the sheer force the round has when it impacts the target. We're talking a couple of times the speed of sound here, as well as the round simply being a big o' chunk o' metal. If specialised payloads can be added such as incendiary, explosive, sabot, hollow point (though I'm not sure how well that shape will work as Mach 2, might tear itself apart due to air resistance), jacketed, etcetera, etcetera, it becomes a much more dangerous sniper than whatever powder weapons are available because of the added range.

And no one said you can't use good ol' fashion powder bullets, it was jsust an example of the weapons tech.

the biggest problem with any sort of coil gun/rail gun is power, they use enormous amounts of power to fire a round, there is no way currently or in the foreseeable future to make such a weapon man portable, the experimental mortar being developed by DARPA uses 1.6 megajoules to fire one round,as a result it requires large capacitors and a diesel generator to charge them

2032, obviously I wont know WHAT we have by then, but I can at least assume they'd have done something with Railguns.

Rail guns, no. Coil guns, possibly. Rail guns take a ruck-ton of power to opperate and would be MASSIVE.

To be fair they'd assumedly have done some development of power storage... otherwise Speranza's glasses wouldn't last the day.

That said, the old adage rings true: the best science fiction has a basis in science-fact. Yu was able to suspend disbelief sufficiently with the cyborgs I think by not making the technology itself the central focus of the story. It's side effects (good and bad) definately, but not the nitty gritty of how it worked... then threw in enough recognisable related tech to keep people just happy enough (whether by accident or design) to enjoy the rest of the story.

Lemme get my mad scientist on...

Hmm...

Definitely possible; as a matter of fact not even twenty years from now, an experimental model of this can be built within 5.

First of all the round itself needs to be considered. Using the old experimental T65 round designed from the .300 Savage; an old powder based round can be used as the delivery mechanism giving the round a bit of a kickstart. The round itself though is most likely going to be a full-jacketed solid-core ball round made out of a hardened magnetic aluminium alloy.

The electromagnetic 'rail' can be a barrel that fires not necessarily as a solid electromagnetic conduit, but one that fires instead in a series of pulses going along with the twist of an actual barrel so as not to need bulky ultra-capacitors.

As for recharging the batteries; the recoil from the 'kickstarted' round could be used to start an industrial type Faraday device or even a miniaturized perpetual motion generator seeing as how if cold fusion isn't off the ground now, it'll probably never get off the ground(damn hippies). Either one could provide continual power to keep the batteries charged.

The only thing is that repeated shots in a semi-automatic setting would be impractical as it wouldn't give the generators enough time to keep the electromagnetic capacitors going and also the barrel enough time to cool down enough. So a bolt-action setup would be more ideal.

Okies; mad scientist is done.

The weapon is a battery operated, bolt action, single shot system. No magazines, due to, in Yumi's case, the other weapons attached to this.

You have to load a battery and round after every shot. The batteries are expendable, though rechargeable batteries could be made for it.

I could envision a coilgun using room-temperature superconductors for maximum energy efficiency. Lithium-air batteries have over nine times the energy density of Lithium-ion batteries and with two more decades of research... Hmm...

In terms of practicality, I could see a sniper rifle application using something like taerkitty's integrated magazine/battery pack (say 3-5 rounds per pack). Speed and range would be the primary benefit - be able to engage targets at longer distances and at higher speeds.

okay, so I've been scheming up some 'simple' glasses for Victoria to wear, and this is what I've got so far:

- Black alloy frames, self tinting safety lenses (or whatever that glass that is tinted in the sun but not tinted in teh shade is called (unless I'm confused with something else)), a heads-up-display per lense, a wire that can be attached to the frame that acts the same as a fibre optic camera, and another wire that can attach to a USB port (or whatever they have at the time) to download information onto a 32GB drive.

I'm wonderin' if there are any other doo-dads that folk think could be added, blutooth maybe... (or the proper name for those lenses).

The lenses are called transition lenses...

...for the love of God no bluetooth please.

Sorry, in my first year of design at uni, basically every single person threw "bluetooth" into their design as this sort of wonder-gadget... including the girl whom tried to tell us hers was powered by bluetooth... needless to say it's basically become a laughing stock. Especially after a mate's mother tried to tell us how brilliant her new car was because it has bluetooth...

...to turn the headlights on for her.
