I watched Barbarella for the first time today - the experience was... intriguing. For a start, I was surprised at just how restrained and tasteful the film turned out to be; its reputation led me to expect big-budget porn, rather than a playfully psychedelic space fantasy. It's not a great film, though, even if we forgive it much as a "cult classic" - I was willing to give Jane Fonda a lot of rope as a girl of childlike wide-eyed naivete in a new sensual world, but in the end... sorry lass, you're just wooden. Also, for a story that's supposed to be a light-hearted adventure it had a real grim downer of an ending, full of slaughter and destruction with an angel being borne aloft on a column of pitch soot... it's actually not a little horrifying! Still, it undeniably had a kitschy sense of style (also some of the sets were visibly creaking) and I liked the soundtrack, whose songs did have a mesmeric quality. Still, Flash Gordon did the kitsch-schtick better.

This is probably the reason I like Barbarella so much, it so wonderfully... 60s. It's terrible, but in the best way possible. Would I personally rate Flash Gordon over it? I don't know, I like Flash Gordon too but... then again, I'm probably looking for different things in a movie.

12 Years a Slave:

Anyone interested in this film already knows it's pretty heavy subject matter.  As testimony to the pre-US Civil War slavery period it's every bit as brutal & unflinching as Roots or Amistad.  Obviously there are scenes that are difficult to watch, but they are all historically accurate and rarely get gratuitous.  You know your own personal tolerance for that sort of thing...plan accordingly.

What's notable about this film is the photography.  It's stark, raw, and brilliant.  Unencumbered by excessive musical score it manages to convey passage of time by clever use of focus & lighting changes...while holding extremely long shots between cuts.  Shallow, out of focus horizons convey a sense of being trapped while still showing wide-open space & distance.  I could keep rambling on...the photography in this is terrific.

New trailer for the live action Kiki's Delivery Service movie. As a fan of LA adaptions of anime, I'm really looking forward to seeing this one when it is released, though I expect it will be much closer to the book than Miyazaki's film (which I preferred over the book).

I liked the touch of them using the choral music from 2001: A Space Odyssey as David Bowman travels through the Jupiter Monolith in the background during the HALO drop.

I liked Gareth Edward's Monsters and after the monster work in Pacific Rim, I have a good feeling about this one. At worst, it has to be better than that 1998 turd released by Emmerich and Devlin.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Well that's three hours of my life - and $12.50 - I won't be getting back.

Not recommended at all - especially in high-frame rate 3D. I kept wondering what it reminded me of and it came to me once Sylvester McCoy appeared - a 1980's Doctor Who serial shot on video tape. Seriously, it looks like an HDTV broadcast of a live performance and nothing at all like film.

Disney's Frozen is excellent.  It's probably the emotionally-effective film that is not made by Pixar (and surpasses some of Pixar's outings as well).  While it is supposedly inspired by Hans Christian Anderson's The Snow Queen, that's at best an "inspired by" and is in no way an attempt to render the classic fairy tale to screen.

Taken on its own, it's a wonderful tale of siblings not as rivals, but being faithful to each other in spite of ill fate and darker human intent.  Oh, and like most Disney stories, it has an amazing soundtrack and top-notch vocal talnts.  Here is one of the blowout songs from it, performed by the one-and-only Idina Menzel.

Frozen is on my Netflix Blu-ray rental list (once it is released). I adored Tangled, so I have high hopes.

Next up for theatrical viewing will be 47 RONIN and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

Speaking to the power of a good trailer, I didn't know what this was about, but I was bummed to learn I would have to wait a year to see it:

You're right. IMDB has as generic a description as I've seen in a while:

Interstellar (2014) Poster

A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.

So, in a flash of inspired irony (and because using someone else's aircon is cheaper than using our own), the breakfast crew decided to go see Frozen. Usual Disney-kids'-movie cheese aside, it was actually rather good. Han and Chewie... I mean, Kristoff and Sven... were entertaining, though I'm coming to the conclusion that getting called "Elsa" for anything means you're being lined up by the writers for a world of suck.

That said, putting The Book Thief into the pre-show trailers seemed a slightly odd choice.

Catching up on some recent views - one in the theater and one on Blu-ray:

47 Ronin

Wasn't expecting much and it didn't deliver much, but I was entertained, so mission accomplished. I saw it in the theater as I thought it might be an SFX-laden movie, but it wasn't, so you can safely wait for the Blu-ray via Netflix and save $12.

The Wolverine

Two hot Japanese girls helped the enjoyment level of this a fair bit. Wink

I know Marvel movies use the end credits to foreshadow new films, and I thought "Guess we're getting a new X-Men movie".

And sure enough...

While I was lukewarm on #2 and really disliked #3, I am looking forward to this one for two reasons:

1) I loved the original, which was directed by Brian Singer and he's helming this one.

2) I really enjoyed X-Men: First Class and that cast is in this one.

I'm guessing from the TV advertising that this is not a faithfully re-created historical film about the real incident in 1703?

Re: Films Everything

Post by Professor Voodoo on Tue 11 Feb 2014 - 21:29

Just got back from The Monuments Men;

I was worried about this film because it deals with a topic I've studied quite a bit...the effect of World War II on the art & historic architecture of Europe.  Usually that leads to impossibly high standards for the film, standards it can't realistically meet.

That said, I came away pleased.  It was not a documentary, the film makers took plenty of liberties with real world events.  All the characters had their names changed, which confused me because I'm very familiar with the real-world individuals they're based on.  That was kind of pointless; they could have preserved the real names...it was obvious who each character was based on.

In spite of its loose grasp on history the movie does a fine job of presenting what the Monuments Fine Arts & Archives program was all about.  If you aren't familiar with what the MFAA did in the war you'll leave with a reasonably good idea.

Artistically it's nothing special.  The camera work is good but not particularly creative.  Scenes and camera takes are short...a little choppy even.  It is ironic that a film dealing with art is not particularly "artsy."  Don't expect a grim treatise on the horrors of war either; other films have dealt with that.  This one touches on the subject but does not dwell on it.

Overall it was enjoyable, even to an over-critical history buff like myself.  Anyone with an interest in WWII history should consider it 2 hours well spent.

The Wind Rises

It's Miyazaki, so it's magnificent, but Porco Rosso remains my favorite Miyazaki film about powered flight. (My favorite Miyazaki film about flight is Kiki's Delivery Service.)

Joe Hisaishi does turn in his greatest score to date. It combines the best of his previous scores into one epic soundtrack.

GODZILLA

If you can, see it in IMAX 3D because it's that kind of film - visually and aurally spectacular.

Thematically, Pacific Rim was the better film. And I say that in terms of re-watchability - I can watch Pacific Rim again, whereas once was enough for GODZILLA but it was an enjoyable experience and worth the price of admission.

So the other week, SBS 2 (who, bless their cotton socks, seem to have decided they are the "cult" channel and broadcast everything from Ninja Warrior to the original Godzilla movies to RuPaul's Drag Race) ran a double feature of Iron Sky and Dead Snow. Sadly I had to go to work the next day so missed Dead Snow, but seriously: how did I miss the Tardis's appearance in Iron Sky? (You'll need 720p to see it, two ships below Spitfire).

The Lunchbox

Saajan is a lonely accountant about to retire from his job. Ila is a young wife seeking her husband's attention, looking for ways to put romance back in her marriage, and tries to cook her way to her husband's heart. A neighbour who lives in the apartment above her gives her advice on cooking and marriage through shouted instructions. Through a rare mixup of the famous "dabbawalas" of Mumbai, the lunchbox with the delicious food Ila prepared for her husband instead gets delivered to Saajan.

Saw the trailer above in the theater and I really wanted to see this as I thought it could be special.

It was.

"That's because you're perfect, Tommy."

Hard for me envision him as Robocop, though.

===

Watched Guardians of the Galaxy.  Don't expect Avengers here.  It's much more wise-cracking, much funnier.  Yes, Avengers had some great moments (most with Loki, e.g. "Puny god.") but the gut-buster count doesn't hold up to Rocket Raccoon.

Yes, the rodent steals the show.  Groot, the tree-thing, being his sidekick, often contributes to the hilarity.  The human is there as the 'story anchor,' as someone with whom the audience can more-or-less (more less than more, IMPO) identify with, cheer for.  The girl kicks ass, the giant is surprisingly funny.

SQUEEEE!! Buckaroo Banzai was my hero growing up. I think I still have a poster lying around somewhere. He made me believe that I didn't have to choose a set career path and can move forward in life in multiple directions. To this day I am doing just fine. Very Happy

taerkitty wrote:Watched Guardians of the Galaxy.

I may well watch it again, just for Rocket and Groot!
I loved Guardians of the Galaxy as a kid, Rocket Raccoon being a favorite. There's just something about a 2' tall creature wielding a rocket launcher over one shoulder and firing off a light machine gun in the other while screaming "Here Comes The Calvary!!!" that put a smile on my face.

My favourite line from the comic...

Rocket Raccoon: Groot? He's my bodyguard.
StarLord(with one eyebrow cocked): You need a bodyguard?
RR: Not really, he mostly reaches things I can't get.

Some unfortunate news...

Studio Ghibli to close
Studio Ghibli, the Japanese animation studio behind such favourites as My Neighbour Totoro, Ponyo and Spirited Away, is to close, it was confirmed today. The news follows rumours that emerged Wednesday to the effect that the business was in financial trouble and unlikely to survive. Producer Toshio Suzuki said that the anime department will be dismantled, though existing films will continue to be distributed.
The move will come as a big disappointment for anime fans worldwide, and especially for those currently enjoying Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, Omoide No Marnie (When Marnie Was There), which opened in Japan last month.

I'd heard that they were actively considering disbanding the production department (so no new content) as Miyazaki and Suzuki were the heart and soul of the place and with them both retired now, there wasn't anyone to take the reins (there is Miyazaki's son, Goro, but dad apparently is not a fan of his talent).

Costs to much to make anime in Japan these days, virtually all  other anime is produced overseas with only the stories coming from Japan

Good news ! Studio Ghibli isn't closing after all, they are only taking a break !

Which probably means they are making a load of their animators redundant and will farm out the anime backgrounds overseas like everyone else does later on !
or they intend to hire a load of computer animators

Miyazaki is said to be considering doing some more short films (like the ones he produced for the Saturn Theater at the Ghibli Museum).

As for going CGI, I don't think so. As close as Miyazaki and Lasseter (of PIXAR) are, Ghibli canned their CGI team just before starting work on Ponyo - all the animation effects for that and subsequent films was done by hand.

So it's almost been a year and based on the new trailers, looks like Interstellar is going to be more Armageddon than Contact. Sad

Second time I've been Rick-Rolled by a trailer (the first being for "A.I. - Artificial Intelligence").

That being said, it was shot in 70mm IMAX so if the Boeing Theater at the Pacific Science Theater gets it, I shall buy a ticket.

Well, I was wrong.

It was Contact...and 2001: A Space Odyssey...and The Abyss.

It was pretty darn astounding, actually.

I believe Interstellar is from the same storycrafters that gave us Contact.  I liked it, but didn't find it life-changing like some other reviewers.

As for the Star Wars trailer, if it didn't have bloody X-Wings, I'm sure the collective fandom would have binned it instantly.  JJA didn't exactly endear himself to sci.fi fans with ST:ID.

That's just the trailer, wait 12 months and you won't be able to see them anymore due to the lens flare that post production will add on !

Frozen

Better than Tangled, but not quite up to the level of Wreck It Ralph. Kristen Bell was fantastic as the voice of Anna, who replaces Jasmine as my favorite Disney princess.

Maleficent

Totally ret-cons Sleeping Beauty and I am 100% okay with that. IMO, easily the best live-action adaption of an animated Disney property.
