I am SOOOO happy that I got designated as family "bail duty" this year. People are already firing off their shotties and magnums and it's still 1 hour to Trento in PDT.

'Bail duty?' Does that mean you have to be ready to appear at the bond office with a fistful of cash?

TBH, I've decided to save watching the OAVs for when they've all been released (sometime mid-year I believe)... ideally on a day when I don't have to do anything.

Congratulations to my colleagues down in Renton on the first flight of the Boeing 737 MAX, the next step in the most successful commercial airliner family in history.

I wish it was driving/riding weather here... at the moment it's really to hot to enjoy.

On the upside, last weekend was CrikeyCon 2016. This was the attendee badge...

While it's probably not the best con badge ever, it's certainly the best I've yet received. Also, Saturday night's after party was an open bar which, in the words of one particular horrified IT manager, meant: "so what you're saying is that, come Saturday night, there are going to be 250 (well, 249, I probably don't count)  drunk hackers all running around Milton with lock picks".

That said, nothing untoward has been reported, so presumably everyone behaved themselves. Leaving the tab open past midnight probably helped.

I'm happy that my new computer has spontaneously recovered from the broken windows update, said windows update appears to have fixed the motherboard's inability to remember settings, and that I don't have to send it back to the manufacturer for the third time.

I'm especially glad because  the night it broke was the night I finally found suitable locations for the final sequence of chapter 3 of Third Time Unlucky.

I really didn't want to go through all the effort of scouring Italy for locations with such specific requirements a second time (on the plus side, they're all recurring locations, so it'll save time in the long run).

Windows 10 per chance?

TBH, I actually quite like Windows 10, but the rolling update thing is a bit of a pain in the posterior. New update comes > manufacturers release their own updated drivers etc to go along with it and, just as everything is getting stable again BAM! New update to bugger it all up again. Ok, so, yes, this is the price of getting in on the thing relatively early, and Microsoft has straight up said it's a work in progress... but the rumblings I've been hearing (and someone can feel free to correct me on this), are that this is how Windows will now continue to be upgraded, rather than getting the new versions being released... which means no happy couple of years of stability while we skip every second release.  Razz

Pretty much. I'm personally skipping out on Windows 10 simply because of how "automatic" everything is. As a veteran technophile, it just doesn't feel right to me if I can't look around and fix something myself.

@Alfisti wrote:Windows 10 per chance?

I'm not sure I need to actually answer this, but yes, it is.

In the same vein, the broken update was on the new PC. I left upgrading my laptop until I knew the new PC was working. As it was working and had all my files successfully transferred over, I nuked my laptop and did a clean re-install of Windows 7 in an attempt to limit problems with the windows 10 upgrade.

Naturally, in the process of upgrading, it would install, look for updates, then hang. Thankfully, a hard-reset would make it take all the stuff off again. It took 13 attempts to successfully install.

And then the new PC broke with my only copies of everything on...

As far as windows 10 goes, I like the sleeker interface, but that's made irrelevant by the amount of listening, spying, storing and transmitting the OS does. I also hate the lack of personalisation options/access under the hood: what good is the ability to have a slideshow of your own photos as your desktop if you're stuck with a black background?

I can't stand the subscription model that everyone seems to be going for. If I've bought something, I want to own it - not be at the mercy of having access switched off and continual payment in order to be able to access/use my own files.

I'm happy because the patch that broke the PC spontaneously fixed itself, so the worst case scenario didn't happen, fortunately.

But yes, we have derailed the discussion.

To be fair, getting sidetracked and de-railing threads is something Cyborg Central has traditionally been quite good at. Razz if someone wants to move it over though...

As to Windows 10, well, I'll still take it over 8 but, yes, I could do without all the data retrieval. I've turned off what I can (and forked for Pro so I can delay updates installing) but, well: just say there's good reason my backup machine still runs 7.

And, no, not a great fan of the subscription model at all, particularly for my use model where I may not use a particular piece of software for weeks or months (hence Adobe CS6, rather than CC).

I'm happy the ancient Dell laptop I generally write on (which runs on XP) is durable enough to drive nails with. And yeah, my backup desktop runs 7 too.

I hate to break this to you, but 7 and 8 do data tracking now too....

In all honesty, there really is a over complaint about the tracking and data information being sent to Microsoft. (Dear lord am I actually defending them...I guess I am..). I've found Windows 10 to be quite similar in features and the "Automatic Updates" really don't bother me too much, as my PC "learns" when I don't use it an installs them when I'm afk. I also run "Enterprise" so I can set update times and such...Shhhh I didn't tell you that.

As a "Technophile" myself however, I actually enjoy the additional features and customization, as well as the quick access to needed programs/utlities by right clicking the start button. As I use and play with 10's settings and features, the more I am liking it. I even have turned on Cortana and have honestly liked the help...and no Cortana doesn't do more with your email than go "Oh hey! Remember to call Mark like you said in your email!" if you let it do that.

Also, going back to teh whole "ITS SPYING ON ME!" if you turn off all data tracking, people freak out about how much Win 10 communicates with servers. When someone actually sat down and analysed it. It was legit traffic. Connecting with the Activation Sever, Checking for updates, etc. etc.

Win 10 isn't a bad operating system, and I personally think its a good successor to Win 7.

Win 10 isn't a bad operating system, and I personally think its a good successor to Win 7.
Depends on what version of 7 you're running, which updates you've actually installed and, more importantly, what some person cleverer than I went and removed from it previously. To be completely honest though, the major reason I run 7 on my backup machine is because it is mature and stable and, while I don't use my backup often, when I do I generally want it in a hurry. Or I'm a long way from any type of support...

...which is also why I'm not a great fan of 10 wanting to communicate with servers as much as it does as well. I did see something about the analysis article, might have been on the WAN show, so I can't make comment on sample sizes etc but, as someone who often works on very limited internet, anything automatic that chews into internet data quota or bandwidth will automatically put me off side from pure force of habit.

Plus I'm also paranoid by nature (blame J+M) and, completely legitimate traffic aside, while I realise a lot of what else 10 collects is indeed purely for development purposes, part of me still doesn't like that anything is going out in the first place.

As I said at the start though: as a whole, I do actually quite like Windows 10, but "like" and "trust to keep working reliably" are two very different things.

Well, I can finally talk about this now (yes, even on a forum no-one I know is ever likely to visit), but work is giving me a sea-change... which is to say I need to drag my arse south to Newcastle sometime between now and June.

On the upside, Newcastle is pretty pleasant, is in wine country, and I do get to live by the seaside. It also has an annual writer's festival.

On the downside, I have to move, which I dislike.

On the downside, I have to move, which I dislike.
A change of scenery might be nice. best of luck! I'm sure your monday musings will keep me up to date on the woes of the moving process  Razz

Well, if nothing else, the view is better than my old place...

Admittedly not difficult though, I actually have a view this time.

Nice view, Alfi. Though I think it would be better if it was closer to the water. Just my opinion, though.

Honestly, in hindsight (and while stressful at the time and in the months following), I think getting made redundant out of the last place was one of the best things that has ever happened to me.

Also, fixed.

Working on it. I know there are a couple of good cafes near the office, including one that is also a second hand book/used vinyl store, and the one under the office will supply the fan-favourite "coffee and a bacon and egg burger for $10" deal. There is also the Empire Coffee Co. (their coffee has a dark side), but I've yet to try it.

Well, the low areas closer the harbour are known to flood and, while the seafront is only a couple of blocks away the other direction, I can't afford anything ocean-facing Razz . Perhaps if I can swing a raise...

Funnily enough, when I was moving in the removalists would keep stopping to look out the windows and point out where things were.

Was playing Diablo 3 with a friend on his Twitch stream and one of my other companions noted his daughter had just returned from the Rooster Teeth eXpo where they confirmed that Volume 4 of RWBY would be released on 22 October.

I've been writing for about seven years now. I've had my share of praise from readers and reviewers, but as far as I knew, none of my family has ever read anything I wrote. 'A prophet without honor,' and all that.

My oldest son is getting married tomorrow. I participated in the rehearsal tonight. Imagine my surprise to learn that my son and future daughter-in-law had incorporated a scene from one of my posted fics into their ceremony...

Wow, that is quite the surprise indeed! I guess some sort of congratulations is in order for both your lucky son (and his equally lucky future wife) for the obvious reasons, but also to you for the honor of having some of your writing make it into your family's notice. Very Happy

With the Defender now out of production (for the next couple of years at least), I was wondering who would step up and give the 70 Series some competition...

Turns out, thanks in part to the Army, the answer is Mercedes (if only on the Australian market in cab-chassis format). Not cheap admittedly, almost double what the Toyota costs, but that it comes with a lot of gear which would normally require specialist fitment as standard helps a little.

A G-Wagon pickup? Sweet. I'm a big fan of the Mog, but they're a bit overkill for a daily drive, unless your commute is across Death Valley or some such.
