Bullets and Related Considerations

Post by Il Direttore on Sun 28 Jul 2013 - 1:33

Because there at least two or three writers in this forum who would actually spend the time researching this stuff.

So, first, an image that demonstrates how a bullet's penetration may be calculated:

Right, so there's also the Wikipedia articles for 9mm Parabellum, 7.62 NATO, and 5.56 NATO, which are probably the most common rounds that writers will be using. Of particular note is the 9mm comparatively equivalent impact energy to a wide variety of other handgun rounds, the 7.62's availability in a ridiculous number of variations, and the 5.56's similar variety.

The purpose of this thread is to collect research, so if you find anything else, please briefly summarize and LINK your information/data!

Bullets are a whole lot more complex than rough penetration numbers IMO. Of particular interest for me is how they expand or fragment, at what ranges they do.

This becomes really relevant when you're using a 10'' AR-15 with x or y bullets. The lower velocity of a shorter barrel is going to give the weapon a drastically different wound profile than an M16, 16'' Ar or even an M4, which might necessitate an entirely different type of ammo.
