First off, I think Jim has something to say:

Jim: See, Allison? I told you Macca'd come back in 2014!

Ok, now to more important stuff.

Honestly, Red Bull look like they've lost the plot from the start. Vettel and Ricciardo churned out way less laps than their competitors. The new Renault V6 could prove problematic for some people (Namely: Triela, Marisa, Jim), and if Renault don't get their act together, Macca could win the championship this year. Especially with their new suspension set-up; they've really made it work for them, as well as rookie Kevin Magnussen.

Also, Williams comeback for the epic win! Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas making the best of that new car, as with Williams! They might be on for a championship chase as well, so maybe we could see Felipe baby take his first win in quite a long time? Perhaps even Bottas winning? Thank goodness for the switch to Mercedes power for Williams!

Jamiebel: Told ya, mr. TG. Mercedes power always wins in the end. Razz

Ross Brawn Formally Retires from F1

So he won't be the new CEO of McLaren Racing as many speculated.

Top Gear has been working to make caravaning less of a pain to the rest of Britain for years.

Lotus has now applied themselves to the task:

So this is what they were doing instead of attending the Jerez test session.  Time well spent.

Switching to serious mode:
Since the other Renault teams had nothing but problems at that Jerez test...getting very little valuable running time...Lotus comes off looking very good by having skipped the test.  Is it possible that the team in Enstone detected the problems with the Renault powerplant, decided the test was going to be useless for them and sat out because of that?  Renault said the issue was a big disparity between running the engine on the dyno and actually running it in the car.  Could Lotus have figured this out ahead of time on its own dyno?

It would be a good strategic move...let Red Bull go out and waste their time while Lotus stays home and saves their resources.  It also gives them another week to work on the car.  Of course, they'd never admit to this because the debacle embarrassed Renault...who would be très graves to find out Lotus could have warned them but didn't.

Interesting theory Voodoo. With-holding the information would also feel like a very Lotus thing to do.

Financial troubles? Being sneaky? That's the Lotus we know and love. Colin Chapman would be proud. Now all they need to do is break out a "foot long" ruler and things will be perfect.

I expect the reality is the car was not ready so they would not have been able to do any running.

Lotus is in Jerez now to use their 100 kilometers of "promotional filming" allotment to get their test in. Renault may also have engineering staff from other Renault-powered teams present to set up an information exchange between the Renault-powered teams to address the issues of component reliability and longevity.

Lotus also tweaked the nose - it is now a pitchfork as opposed to two uneven sausages.

In all thought, I would have agreed with Kisk - the car might not have been ready at the time, but that was an unforeseen outcome for the Enstone team; they might have lucked out in the end. By then, the engines might have been fixed, so who knows? Wink

Win... got to figure out if anyone is broadcasting it here.

And it is the season for motorsport starting up again, including the V8 Supercars.

In their inaugural outing, team Volvo Polestar have qualified second on the grid for race two of the Clipsal 500... which is rather impressive, and much better than they were expecting.

Maybe some web channel?  Boomer, you seem to be the most excited about this, do you know where we can watch it?

That field is getting really interesting.  They've got Holden & Ford, plus Nissan & Mercedes coming in last year and now Volvo.  Cool.

The crown for most manufacturers still has to go to the World Superbike Championship this year; 8 different factories.
From Italy: Aprilia, Ducati, MV Agusta
From Japan: Honda, Suzuki and defending champions Kawasaki
From Germany: BMW
From the US: Erik Buell Racing

In the US; Fox Sports 1 is airing it although due to the location geoblocking may be in effect.

Here's the website with better details: http://www.redbullairrace.com/en_US/article/watch-action-tv

Qualifying ended earlier today so I'll post results as soon as my company leaves.

Qualifying Results for Abu Dhabi

Official timing results from Qualifying in Abu Dhabi 28 March 2014:
1. Pete McLeod (CAN) 0:57.932
2. Paul Bonhomme (GBR) 0:58.129
3. Nigel Lamb (GBR) 0:58.308
4. Hannes Arch (AUT) 0:58.353
5. Matt Hall (AUS) 0:58.713
6. Martin Sonka (CZE) 0:58.929
7. Nicolas Ivanoff (FRA) 0:58.989
8. Kirby Chambliss (USA) 0:59.699
9. Yoshi Muroya (JPN) 0:59.858
10. Matthias Dolderer (GER) 0:59.904 (including +1 penalty)
11. Michael Goulian (USA) 1:00.362
12. Peter Besenyei (HUN) 1:02.163

The British Bombers (Nigel Lamb and Paul Bonhomme) placed in the top three as usual with American aces Kirby Chambliss and Michael Goulian placing near the bottom. Surprisingly Pete McLeod of Canada came out of nowhere to claim the pole.

In the inaugural Challenger Cup (similar in format to the old IROC racing series); Francois Le Vot of France claimed the cup just edging out Swedish pilot Daniel Ryfa but 1/100th of a second with Juan Velarde of Spain coming in third.

This is already shaping up to be a very interesting season indeed.

I think I'm going to have to follow the V8 Supercars a bit more closely this year, because Race 2 of the Clipsal 500 was amazing, particularly the final lap, with 2013 rookie of the year Scott McLaughlin holding off last year's champion to deliver Volvo a podium on their second ever outing.

And the post race interview:

Alas, when FOX Sports 1 took over the SPEED Channel they sent all the racing to Fox Sports 2, which we don't get. So now I have to use torrents or YouTube to follow all the series I used to (outside of F1).

(A bit late, but I wanted to make sure there was an active DL for the race day event which you can find HERE. Please note that these link to P2P 'sitez' and thus caution should be taken and web protection should be on and ready in the case that these become attack points. As of this posting these links are till clean, but they may not be in the future.)

Red Bull Air Race World Championships

-Corniche Beach; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

In the Top 12 heats; Nicolas Ivanoff of France outflew Czech Pilot Martin Sonka to claim the first spot of the Super 8.
Aussie pilot Matt Hall took the second spot with American Kirby Chambliss taking a 2 second penalty on his second lap to put him out of the running.
Austrian Hannes Arch shows the field how it's done with the fastest time in the Top 12 round to eliminate Yoshihide Muroya of Japan.
Though he played it safe through the course, British ace Nigel Lamb easily gets past German Matthias Dolderer.
Brit champion Paul Bonhomme (of all people) gets a pass run when American Michael Goulian experiences engine trouble with his Edge 540 and has to scratch the heat thereby eliminating him from the Super 8 competition.
Taking advantage of Peter Besenyei's performance concerns in qualifying, Pete McLeod of Canada takes a slower approach but still edges out the Hungarian.

With that the field is cut down to Nicolas Ivanoff, Matt Hall, Hannes Arch, Nigel Lamb, Paul Bonomme, and Pete McLeod. With Martin Sonka and Matthias Dolderer taking the two wild card slots with the fastest times in the loser's column to round out the field for the Super 8.

In the Super 8 round; Dolderer, Ivanoff, and Sonka all turned in solid times before Matt Hall set the stage with a time of :58.02. However, with the following run Hannes Arch made a statement as to (i)why he is the new man to beat destroying Matt Hall's time with a official finish of :56.86 to claim a spot in the Final 4 and the course record. The British Bombers followed suit and with Lamb and Bonhomme both turning in respectable times to claim potential slots in the Final 4, the field seemed set for the next round, that was until Pete McLeod took to the skies. Going for broke seemed to have become his mantra as took off on the course like a man on a mission and finished his run with an outstanding time of  :56.71 to claim the top slot (I)and the new course record while eliminating Nigel Lamb from the Final 4.

In the Final 4; Matt Hall led off the round with a solid run in his first lap, but clipped a pylon in his second to end his day with a DNF. Hannes Arch then took to the course and chased Pete McLeod's time  and fell just short of the record with :56.77. Not to be outdone however, Paul Bonhomme tore through the course and finished with in the lead with a time of:56.43 and to take the course record. Now guaranteed a podium finish, Pete McLeod sped through the course, but played it safe with a time of 57.05 taking third.

Abu Dhabi-Final Results
1. Paul Bonhomme (GBR) - 00:56.43
2. Hannes Arch (AUT) - 00:56.77
3. Pete McLeod (CAN) - 00:57.05

Current Standings After 1 Event
1. Paul Bonhomme (GBR) - 12 pts
2. Hannes Arch (AUT) - 9 pts
3. Pete McLeod (CAN) - 7 pts
4. Matt Hall (AUS) - 5 pts
5. Nigel Lamb (GBR) - 4 pts
6. Matthias Dolderer (GER) - 3 pts
7. Martin Sonka (CZE) - 2 pts
8. Nicolas Ivanoff (FRA) - 1 pt
12. Yoshihide Muroya (JPN) - 0 pts
12. Peter Besenyei (HUN) - 0 pts
12. Kirby Chambliss (USA) - 0 pts
12. Michael Goulian (USA) - 0 pts

I KNOW RIGHT!! Hannes Arch and even Pete McLeod are giving him a good run much like how they did before the hiatus, but when he got a pass run in the Top 12 I just had to say "Really?!" at my monitor.

Winter Testing is now complete and the 2014 Formula One season is set to start in two weeks at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia.

The new technical regulations have certainly scattered the cat amongst the pigeons, with teams still chasing Power Unit reliability as there were a total of eight Red Flags during the latest test in Bahrain for stranded cars. None of the teams have been able to maximize the performance of their PUs for a single flying lap due to reliability issues, which could make qualifying a crap-shoot.

At the moment, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team looks to be strongest with good reliability and the highest top speed. Close behind is the Williams F1 team, also with good reliability and good speed. The Mercedes Power Unit seems to be the strongest, with some rumoring an advantage of upwards of 65hp over the Ferrari and 165hp over the Renault Power Units.

Scuderia Ferrari seems to be a distant third behind Mercedes AMG and Williams, with the PU still showing dicey reliability (Ferrari, Sauber and Marussia have all suffered multiple PU failures). McLaren Mercedes and Force India as of yet do not seem to be able to make as much of their Mercedes PU as the factory and Williams teams have, but if they can improve the reliability, they should be competitive and that does not bode well for Ferrari's chances...

The Renault Power Unit appears to be a disaster. Regardless of how large the horsepower deficit is at maximum power, none of the Renault teams can run their PUs at maximum power without it failing. Compounding the PU issues is the design of the Infiniti Red Bull Racing R10 and Lotus E22 that are exacerbating the heat-dissipation issues and making an already unreliable PU that much more so. Just how woeful the situation is can be shown by Caterham being the most-reliable Renault team, but only because they followed Renault's design parameters. IRBR and Lotus both have run only a handful of laps and therefore have been able to spend little time on development and race preparation.

The Renault-powered teams may have to run their PUs at well-below peak power to even qualify and the FIA has been rumored to considering suspending the 107% rule to ensure that the Renault-powered teams are on the grid. However, even if they do qualify they may be well off the race pace just to be able to complete the race.

Sounds like the annual cyborg F1 sweepstakes this year may not be so much "who will win" as (like the bet going in the office right now) "who will make it to race distance"...

Infiniti Red Bull Racing is evidently seeking help from sister team Toro Rosso to properly implement the "brake by wire" system and to help combat the "turbo lag" of the Renault power unit.

Wouldn't it be the ultimate Cinderella story if Williams stays on form and Massa actually takes the 2014 World Championship?
Extreme long shot, I know...but who would have picked Jenson Button before the 2009 opener?

Also;
With the Renault teams experiencing power woes that will likely not be fixed before qualifying there has been talk of suspending the 107% rule.  This would violate F1 rules though.  The rulebook may not be changed during a race weekend to the advantage of any team.  This became an issue at the 2006 United States Grand Prix when it was suggested that a chicane be added to the super-fast final turn at Indianapolis, so the Michelin tires would not explode.  Ferrari protested, citing the rule I mentioned above, and we all know what happened.

If they do suspend the 107% rule will any of the other teams protest?  It would be a very bad publicity move to exclude 8 cars from the grid at the season opener...

I'd love to see Massa and Williams win the WDC and CC.

As for suspending the 107% rule, with the end of the Concorde Agreement and the new whatever they call it council in place, I do not believe they need "unanimous consent" anymore to make rules changes.

Also have to say that, for the moment, I am not a fan of the new engine audio. They sound like they're "droning" as opposed to "screaming" like the naturally-aspirated units, but I understand TV does not begin to do them justice and in person they evidently sound much "cooler".

Gutted for Ricciardo - I wanted him to score big points early so they made him the #1.  Muh-m-muhahahaha!

Overall, the race unrolled much as I expected - Mercedes dominant, Lotus junk, McLaren and Williams strong, Ferrari decent. The new cars look like a handful and it was nice to see drivers really driving.

Not surprised Vettel retired, but was surprised Lewis did. Kimi looked to have nothing for Alonso, but Fred wasn't exactly a force to be reckoned with out on the track, either. That both cars evidently had electrical problems means they're probably better than they looked, which is a hopeful sign.

Sacking Perez looks to have been the right call with how well Magnussen drove. Kvyat looked solid, as well.

Most annoyed about Kobayashi's rear brake failure taking out Massa in Turn One as based on how strong Bottas was, he should have easily scored good points.

Only three Renault-powered cars made it to the end, however, so that has to be worrying...

I also feel Ricciardo's pain - getting excluded in your home GP is really aggravating.

Also, give Lotus their due - they went on for at least 80% of the race distance, unlike one Sebastian Vettel.  Wink

Ferrari did have some software issues affecting the car's power, so that's why Alo and Rai didn't really get higher up and compete for the win, Alo more so; the F14T could be quite a sleeper.

As for Perez, well, he had to show his worth in FI, as did Hulkenberg, so of course they'd be dicing it up with the top guys. Also, I think the car could contribute more to young Magnussen's podium. But, then again, he did score a couple of fastest times during testing. Solid gold for the guys in Silver? Hopefully.

Also, yea to the new youngest points scorer - Daniil Kvyat, at 19 years and 324 days old.

Kobayashi and Ericsson actually had good cars, reliability being the only curse for them. Bottas, at least, scored more points than Williams in 2013, so that's good news.

Three Renault cars did finish, yes, but that gives the Renault guys enough data and time (albeit one week) to fine-tune the engines for everyone. I know Mercedes and Ferrari already have. Razz

Isn't the Australian race organisers suing the FIA?

Ron Walker, the Australian race promoter, told Melbourne's The Age that the quiet growl emitted by the new V6 turbo engines is "clearly in breach of contract," which are some fightin' words when it comes to things involving money:1P

Indeed. I got a chance to see the race this morning, and to be honest, it was a relief seeing the Silver Arrows leading a race instead of the Red Bulls (also, massive bad luck for Daniel; should have finished that race).

Well done to Lewis, his first win in Malaysia; also well done to Romain Grosjean for holding off former teammate Raikkonen to take 11th (perhaps points to come sooner for Lotus than later?). Jim will be satisfied with that, Jamiebel ecstatic with Mercedes' second consecutive win.

McLaren did put up a strong showing, in my honest opinion; they just faded at the end. Nico Hulkenberg is definitely showing his strength at SFI, as is Kamui Kobayashi at Caterham - the latter could win Caterham's first points. And for Felipe, he banished the ghosts of 2010 and '(insert name here) is faster than you' to face Valtteri head-on (when faced with team orders) and show why he's the senior driver at Williams.

Fernando is definitely getting used to the F14T, compared to Raikkonen, who's having more technical problems. Give it a race or two, we could see either one of the two on the podium.

So after formerly dismissive of the idea, Bernie Ecclestone is now saying that Gene Haas' bid will be approved to become the 12th Formula One constructor. The team would use a Dallara chassis and Ferrari engine, though with the talk of the return of Customer Teams, this may be a way for Ferrari to set up a junior team (as Toro Rosso once was to Red Bull Racing).

Nice to hear that there will be 24 cars once again, after 2012 and the demise of HRT. One thing that did puzzle me - because Sauber and Marussia use Ferrari engines, aren't they also part of the junior team loop too? (i.e. Jules Bianchi from the Ferrari drivers' Academy; he signed with Marussia, year after they signed him, they got Ferrari engines) And if so, that means there's technically two junior teams (Haas and Marussia), right?

I'm kinda lost on the idea of customer teams and junior teams - I just associate them by engine.  Razz

Yet again has Mercedes dominated the Bahrain GP, but they truly made the GP memorable. Indeed, the cars had come in like Noah's Ark - two-by-two, in different teams.

Red Bull - Again, they were off the performance of Merc, but had to hold their ground with Force India. Sebastian Vettel's DRS problems did cost him a chance at a podium.

McLaren - What can I say, but "bad luck" for Kevin and Jenson. Retiring near the end never does bode well.

Ferrari - Luca di Montezemolo was right in turning away in disgust. Not only are the Ferrari engines down on power like the Renaults, 9th and 10th is never acceptable from the red cars. He claims everything must be improved - engine, chassis, aero; the lot.

Lotus - Again, they show improvement, but not enough pace to see them crack the top ten...yet. They have reliability down to a T, now Alan Permane and the Enstone guys must work on engine mapping to match the Mercs and Red Bulls. (They built a 'sunday' car, in other terms) Also, the must work on Pastor Maldonado - he nearly killed Esteban Gutierrez!

Mercedes - Like I said before, they dominated. They brought the cars home and did it by racing as well. Well done to the boys at Brackley.

Force India - How about that, eh? Perez on the podium and Hulk' in the top 5 put them in the spotlight for this race, no doubt. Be sure to look for them fighting near the front in Shanghai.

Williams - Another solid performance for the Grove guys. They didn't have the luck needed, but they got to fighting for big points places. The rivalry between them and SFI are heating up...

Toro Rosso - Nothing noteworthy from Vergne, but Kvyat once again shows he can hang with the best. And at 19, too. Shame he couldn't get the points.

Sauber - They really need to get their act together. Sutil and Gutierrez are way off the pace here; if they wanna match the Williams and FI's, they must show speed and consistency.

Marussia and Caterham - The gap to the midfield has indeed narrowed, with Sauber off the ball. Gotta applaud Max Chilton - he's getting better every race. Let's hope he (or Bianchi) scores points in Monaco. And Kamui Kobayashi is definitely too fast for a Caterham - he's putting on performances even Takuma Sato even hopes for! No doubt some teams might keep an eye on him later on.

And on the cyborgs' side of things, it's "normal business as usual." Jamiebel winning her side of the bet with Lewis' victory (sorry, Allison) and others enjoying the race.

Re: 2014 World Motorsports Discussion Thread

Post by Professor Voodoo on Sun 6 Apr 2014 - 22:44

This round in Bahrain was the best one we've seen so far...even if it was a walk-away for one team.  That said; they deserve it.  Seems like they took a page from Brawn GP's 2009 playbook in compromising their 2013 season to focus resources on a big rules change.  Being the factory team for the undisputed best engine on the grid doesn't hurt either.

I think Williams deserved better than it got.  They seem to have forgotten how to convert speed into race wins and podium finishes...hopefully they can re-discover something from their glory days in the mid-90's.
Seeing Massa do well reminds me of Damon Hill's move to Jordan in 1998...a move that breathed fresh life into a career most had written off as over.  Hill's time at Jordan yielded a popular win at Spa, could we see something similar from the Massa-Williams combination?  Both driver & team are capable of it.

In his post race interview Alonso said China would be the turning point for Ferrari (he hopes).  I think he's being a little optimistic there.  The Ferrari is down on straight-line speed and Shanghai is a track which demands exactly that.  I fear Kara may have to wait until the European rounds begin before she does any celebrating.

As I was watching the race I was thinking "Pastor Maldonado catches a lot more flak than he deserves"...and then he stupidly punts Gutierrez onto his roll bar.  What the US broadcast team completely missed (or ignored) was that Maldonado was coming out of the pits when it happened, braking for that turn on cold tires.  He's lucky to have only caught a 10-second penalty...I'd have suspended him for a race and fined the team for not keeping him informed on the position of faster cars.

How about Red Bull & McLaren?  Prior to this weekend I'd have said "Red Bull has speed but no consistency yet" and "McLaren have awesome reliability but no speed".  Well, both bucked my predictions this weekend, but not in a good way.  Two days of testing are exactly what these two squads need.

Force India is doing really well, but the question is where do they go from here?  They've got two very skilled drivers, both deserving of seats higher up the grid.  They've got the best engine and a good chassis.  But do they have the resources to take the next step, and rise up to become challengers for podiums and race wins?  I fear they don't.

A few years ago the Bahrain GP was criticized for being "processional".  I don't think anyone can accuse this years race of that.  It's going to be a difficult two weeks, waiting for the next round!

Good news, everyone!

Dacia will be joining the Formula One World Championship in 2015.

It's actually a Romanian consortium fronted by ex- HRT and Midland team principle Colin Kolles, but it does have the backing of Dacia who, as a subsidiary of the Renault automotive empire, will be providing Renault engines.

America will be back as a Constructor, as well, with the approval of Gene Haas' team, however they are not expected to join the grid until 2016 to give them more time to secure sponsorships. Ferrari will be providing the engine and gearbox and Dallara will be designing and building the chassis.

It looks like the Ferrari Power Unit is the least-powerful one (Renault is still weak, but they're not as weak as they were in Winter Testing) so not sure what they can do with the engine freeze to improve it, so it will probably depend on aero development.

It's pretty clear this is 2009 all over again, with Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton taking the roles of Brawn and Jensen Button. Kind of ironic that with all the complaining in years past about Red Bull Romps, three races in to 2014 we already know who will be the World Driving and Constructors Champions, respectively.  Razz

On Dacia joining F1: Well, that does seem a bit odd. I always pegged them not to join the sport, indeed. Razz Perhaps they might become the new Junior Renault F1 team?

And on the Fezza PU and Red Bull romps: I'm gonna have to agree with you two on this one. At best, Monaco and twisty tracks of the sort might/will favor the Ferrari, is what I'm thinking. And when they get to Monza (which is nothing but straight-line speed and high-speed cornering), you really have to doubt the F14T's real potential. And in that case, I don't see Kara (or even Simone, who now cheers for Ferrari, because of Kimi) celebrating any wins; more like when they get on the podium. And it's actually quite a nice change from the blue cars winning to the silver ones romping home the win. Plus, it should put RBR fan Triela in her place; away from the main trophies.

And I don't think Lewis might be taking his second championship. In fact, my money's on Nico; I wanna see 6 champs on the grid again. Razz

Jamiebel: Eh, I don't have a driver preference myself. I just cheer on the Silver Arrows, and I'm happy with whoever wins.

I'm sure if Nico Rosberg were here on this board he'd point out that he, not Lewis, is in the points lead heading into the track where he took his first win.
It's true, safe money is probably best placed on Hamilton, but I think Rosberg will give a much better fight than Rubens gave Jenson in 2009.

I'm guessing their involvement will be similar to Lada's involvement with Renault in 2010, Nissan/Infiniti's involvement with Red Bull and Malrussia's involvement with their current team...little more than a sticker and a suitcase full of money.

I think that the drive Lewis put in on the final stint after the Safety Car at Bahrain is proof enough he has the measure of Nico in a straight-up fight.

And Nico's points haul benefits greatly from Lewis DNFing in Melbourne.

Marisa: Gay-Lussac's Law states that the pressure exerted on the sides of a container by a gas of fixed volume is proportional to its temperature.

Triela: What's she talking about?

Elio: When you pressurize a gas it gets hotter...a particularly important thing to know when filling SCUBA tanks.

Kara: Soooo...how does that relate to Mercedes' F1 engine?

Elio: Proximity to the hot turbine is not the only reason you need to run turbocharged air through an intercooler.  The act of compressing the air creates a good deal of that heat.

Marisa: Yeah...isn't that what I said?

Elio: I'm just surprised moving the two halves of the turbo apart made such a big difference...and that the added rotational mass of that long PTO shaft doesn't offset the power gain.  It was a gamble, but it paid off.

This will be interesting as the season goes on.  By all accounts Rosberg is the better tester, working many more hours with the team to improve the car.  I think you can credit his time spent with Michael Schumacher for that.  He learned under Schumi's tutelage to be a very 'hands-on' driver.

Hamilton by contrast idolizes Ayrton Senna, and drives the same way.  He takes the car by the scruff of the neck and drives the piss out of it, whether it's behaving for him or not.  So as the season goes on a lot will depend on development:
If the mid-season upgrades are good; advantage Rosberg, who played a bigger part in developing them, and understands them better.
If the mid-season upgrades are bad; advantage Hamilton, because it doesn't matter as much to him.

Historically that favors Lewis.  Brawn/Mercedes is a team that typically starts a season strong and fades as its rivals improve.  That's what happened in 2009 when they won the title with Button...and in 2012 when Mercedes had "double DRS".

The event opened up with the Challenger Cup

Qualifying Results for Rovinj:

1. Hannes Arch – 00:57.72
2. Paul Bonhomme – 00:57.87
3. Pete McLeod – 00:58.15
4. Matthias Dolderer - 00:58.51
5. Nigel Lamb – 00:58.64
6. Yoshihide Muroya – 00:58.68
7. Kirby Chambliss – 00:59.82
8. Peter Besenyei – 01:00.21
9. Matt Hall – 01:00.56
10. Nicolas Ivanoff – 01:00.63
11. Michael Goulian – 01:01.40
12. Martin Sonka – DNF

Paul Bonhomme placed in the top three again which is becoming old hat for the veteran pilot, with Nigel Lamb placing in a surprising fifth. Pete McLeod is still an ace to be reckoned with as he placed third in qualifying just behind Bonhomme, but the real surprise is Hannes Arch who keeps it coming from his surprise performance in Abu Dhabi and takes the pole.

Americans Kirby Chambliss and Michael Goulian took seventh and eleventh respectively, but it seems that they are clearly outmatched in this years event.

In the Challanger Cup competition; Francois Le Vot notches another win in what may become a dynasty run for the Frenchman with Great Britain's Tom Bennett, and Slovenian newcomer Peter Podlunsek coming in third.

Stefano Domenicali has resigned as Team Principal for Scuderia Ferrari after seven years in the position. He will be replaced by the President of Ferrari America, Marco Mattiachi.

Speculation is he has been sacked since the team hasn't won a championship under his tenure and the car this year looks to be a lemon.

Chinese GP...
Spoiler:
Triela: (handing €10 over to Jamiebel) I think I should have saved some of that money I've won over the past 4 years.  This sucks...I'm going broke!

Allison: (grumbling) You get used to it with time.

Marisa: I don't belive this merda!  Both Williams have contact in the first corner...Massa has the pit stop from hell...and they STILL beat my Toro Rosso boys?  I'm never gonna get to pick the Monday lunch spot again!

Kara: Look on the bright side; Kvyat scored a point again...AND FERNANDO GOT ON THE PODIUM!  LOOKOUT YOU SILVER BITCHES, WE'RE COMIN' FOR YOU!

Elio: Do you need the tranquilizer dart gun?

Michele: I might...keep it handy, okay?
_______________________________________________

Well, the result is no surprise at the top...but I'll the the first to point out that I was completely wrong about Ferrari.  I figured they were gonna get squashed at this track...Alonso wasn't kidding when he said they expected to turn things around at this race.

Hulkenberg had a quiet but solid race...not enough to keep him at third in points, but he's still holding some heavy hitters behind him.  Force India is still 3rd in Constructor points.

And who was that conducting the podium interviews?  I didn't recognize him.

WEC Silverstone
Spoiler:
No race results yet, and no US broadcast...but things are looking very interesting.  Porsche topped Free Practice 1...Audi took FP2...then Toyota took the pole position.  Could sports car racing be getting back on its feet after so many lean years?  Wish we actually see some of it.  Even if the cars are butt-ugly.
