You seriously won't mind your son wanting to be a cheerleader or having his room painted pink and trimmed with lace? or preferring tea parties over sports.... or collecting dolls instead of collecting trading cards??

I dislike sports. And it all really depends on what kind of trading cards. Also, tea parties are my kinda thing.

Seriously, though - it's his life, and I can't live it for him. All that really matters is that he not turn out a failure.

I know straight guys like that. Metrosexual, they're usually called.
It's slightly disturbing to me, but I understand that's just my social predjudices coming to the fore.

oh, and I've never liked sports or trading cards... I've substituted combat practice and weaponry.

These things are influenced by the media and the people around them. telling them that "acting gay is not really normal" once in a while should be healthy

My personal stuff range from daggers to plush toys, i think that's understandable

Why would "acting gay" not be normal?

Totalitarianism isn't something I'm fond of. Nor is a majority perspective on what is considered "normal".

in addition, I really don't think it's 'healthy' to be told how to act socially... it's tantamount to being told what to think, which is only healthy for keeping slaves in line. Since slavery itself is horribly unhealthy...

@ General discusssion:

"Normal" is not a standardised term. It means something different in every culture and for every person. If you accept the definition that normal is whatever is most popular and most accepted then most of it would be complete bull-shit and really not worth going after. Everything that's really good is by definition above-average and hence also abnormal. So there are two sides to it.

Anywya, in Canada (with it's openess to just about anything) I've gotten lost in all the possoble sexualities. I find a good deal of the options just plain weird or downright disturbing, but I agree with you guys that as long as they don;'t actively bother me or hurt peoplel it's thier life and I really don;t care what they do.

@LoC: Yeah, peer pressure and the need to conform to society is already choking a lot of people.

@Nacht: That's right. I mean, who hasn't dreamt of his own cute personal slave... Razz

The reality of modern slavery is very disturbing, though. Thinking that even now women are regularly kidnapped and sold like objects really shakes my belief in humanity.

The concept of how people can buy someone and own them is disturbing to me even at the age of 19 when I have known about this for nearly a decade. It's the same thing for when someone rapes or kills someone else it is just downright saddening(if that is even a word or the correct spelling).

Normalcy is something a lot of people of the past look back to. It seems the new generation it is the opposite, it's like you have to stick out from the rest of the world or at least your corner of your world.

...flamboyance does not always equal individuality. There's a big difference between trying to 'stick out of the crowd' and thinking for yourself. Many kids today simply try to act crazy and flaunt disregard for common sense simply because it's 'cool'. Kinda like the 'Rebel Without a Cause' syndrome of the 50s is being revisited.
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Goddamn MTV...

Speaking of slavery, Gunslinger Girl is hitting pretty close. It’s one of the more disturbing aspects of the story. I’m not really sure which is worse – a young girl forced into prostitution or forced to be a murderer. But I guess being whacked out of your mind on conditioning drugs helps take the sting out of it…

Totally agree.

Little girls at the brink of death are given a second chance at life to
play the role as killers. That concept alone I think really got me
interested in Gunslinger girls.

Saw the artwork being butchered to death in peoples wallpapers in http://www.minitokyo.net/ and so decided to check it out as soon as I could.
I would have bought it straight off, but for the fact that I'd bought Rahxephon purely on the same basis (i.e. it's artwork) and the result wasn't exactly equivilent to what i'd paid! Smile

Here's what the whole package looks like. It's very cute, but gah...over 100$ is too much! Maybe if the GSG fandom becomes larger they'll make more of them and they'll be at a lower price!

Not quite college bound yet, but I fit the broke part. Luckily, I got a job as a telemarketer so I'll start making some serious bank. I get paid every other week so my checks aren't too bad. My first one wasn't too good though since they only gave me one week on it. And that was before the third week pay raise. Bastards.

...oh right, the topic which I am late to. >_>; Actually, said obsession came about as a result of wanting new sci-fi after an episode of Terminator, and deciding to search iTunes. I was literally all "hmm, Gunslinger Girl...isn't that about teenage assassins? I should check that out. It might not suck."

Cut to about 5 hours later and following a scramble to find a subbed version on Veoh:

"O_O ...omfg I love this show and all it represents."

Especially since it deals with the whole horrible moral dilemmas and the emotional damage and such on such a fantastic level. I don't know that even Ghost in the Shell does it as well as GSG does, and that's saying something.

Razz I'd disagree in that they compare fundamentally different things: one's about the limits of being human and how much of ourselves we can actually afford to give up, as well as looking at what the future will be like, whereas Gunslinger is about--

...well okay so it's also about the limits of being human, and it does do that better, I must concede. XD; But it also explores how love's defined, what's right and wrong in terms of law enforcement and warfare, slavery, and...bah. I'm invalidating myself. ^_^;

Also to its credit, GSG does not jar with its mix of "cute" and "deadly" the way the Tachikomas do in Stand Alone Complex. I love the spidery little bastards, but to have them interrupt a serious, dark plotline the way they so often do just irks me. ¬_¬;

In fairness Ghost in the Shell was first and I'd be willing to bet that without GitS there'd be no GSG.
And the difference is that GitS story is more to do with polictical and sociological manipulation where'as GSG has a more micro approach rather than the macro one GitS has.
I'll say it again as well for emphasis.....GitS came first.

It's true, it's true, and I do love GitS dearly...in fact, that was the other thing I was looking for, thank you, was the political element. XD; I am an absolute sucker for well-done politics, especially futuristic politics, and really if I had any complaint about GSG it'd be that the political element isn't heavy enough: the potential that a security breach at Section Two has is just awesome.

Hell, I'd give my ear to see an Aida plotline where the girls/the rest of the SWA have to defend themselves from the Italian government coming to shut them down á la the "non-legit" arc of Stand Alone Complex.

I'd be mildly interested if one of their escorts is a bunch of young girls with violin cases......

It'll come later in the plot I'm guessing, one of the interesting things in the Rosanna arc is that they are attacked by a government car.
So someone in government is most definately an enemy of Section 2! Smile

But I'm just kidding. Really.

That's okay, If you'd been calling him for loving GitS however............
Also calling him for the plotline comment would also have made you a target. Wink

NO! My secret plot to destroy Nachtsider is RUINED! RUINED! D: I will never be able to infiltrate his inner circle now!

And I didn't even mention that I like a certain American candidate, either...>.>;;;; but moving away from that. ^^;

I suppose I should note that the politics I love are generally more...international politics, or foreign domestic politics. Things with intrigue and high stakes! Very Happy *resists urge to re-plug Gods and Fighting Men*

U.S. domestic politics are known to cause bleeding from the ears in a violent fashion if you're not wearing proper protective gear. X___X;

it may've been a horrible time of political confusion and fear mongering (kinda like now!), but it did spawn some really great fiction (which I'm currently reading):

very. quite different from the movies, as well, being set in the early 80s, having more parties hunting Bourne (such as an old-fashioned, well-established assassin) and... well, the rest would be a spoiler.
the trilogy is 1400 large, fairly small-print pages, though. not for the short of attention span.

...I actually love the Cold War as a historical era for precisely such reasons as Jason Bourne and the other works of Ludlum, so kudos to LoC for interjecting him. XD; That and the clearly defined sides...but with room for complexity, and character development, and viewpoints from both sides!

im quite a book reader, but if the book bores me for 3 chapters straight, im burning it into ashes.

Eh, don't worry about it. The last thing I'd do would be let political ideology get in the way of comradeship.

And as for my inner circle - you sure you want to infiltrate it, Alpha? You've got no idea how deep the rabbit holes go hereabouts.

Glad to hear it! Very Happy I follow a similar creed. (After all politics, like faith, are quite personal and ought to remain so. >.>; Something many Americans tend to forget, unfortunately.)

As for the inner circle, well I have to infiltrate it in order to destroy y--er, I mean--LOOK! AN ENTIRE TRUCK FULL OF XM8s! ...*realizes truck could, in fact, be filled with XM8s and chases it*

XM8s are lovely weapons - I was actually contemplating saddling Liesel with one later on, unless anybody else wants dibs on them. *follows you in chasing the truck* Really can't understand why they were discontinued and all...

I second that. I read the "Bourne Identity", which was really good, and I've been planning to get my hands on the other two books for a long time.

Re: How did you first get interested in GSG?

Ok Smile

Well it was on Friday, 14 July 2006. (No, I didnt remember the date lmao! The date is still on my GSG Epi 1 file).

I logged on to MSN as usual and saw that my gaming buddy had a new display pic. On closer inspection it was a bunch of anime girls with guns.

First reaction: LOL WTF?!

So me and a few friends and started making fun of him. It just seemed funny at the time. To me anime girls with guns just sounded cheesy. After I while I got interested, wondering what the hell the plot could be about. So I looked it up on wiki. The word 'cyborg' got my attention. Thought cyborgs were awesome, recongized a few guns from Counter-Strike as well (rofl).

I then decided to download the first epi, hoping it wasn't some cheesy crap.

I was impressed from the first second. The OP was... wow. Henrietta bezerk was like... holy crap!! AWESOME!!!! and it wasn't some "lol I killed 500 pplz yay" cheesy stuff either. Thought the ED suited the mood very well too. I loved the serious atmosphere of it.

Now I've been crazy about it ever since. Even made a few crappy Flash animations on GSG Razz

Oh, I forgot to say. GSG was the first anime I seriously watched as well. Back then I was one of them streotypical idiots that thought anime was just cheesy happy crap. Now I know there are actually some really good serious stuff out there. Man I love serious shit.
