Original Characters as Generation Three Cyborgs?

Post by Kiskaloo on Sat 31 May 2014 - 17:58

We had a rather wide-ranging discussion about "Type 3" cyborgs back in 2008 here, however with some of the newer OCs, I am starting to think maybe we have now reached the Generation Three cyborg.

Specifically, I point to Il Direttore's Caterina and PVST's Valentina Rossi whom are classified as Generation Two cyborgs by their creators, but have mild to extensive internal modifications beyond what their "sister's" have in support of their SIGINT/ELINT roles.

Well, from memory, ID was working on an alternate timeline with Caterina, one in which those mods and more defined specialisations were part of the Gen02 programme from day dot. Perhaps we need some sort of signifier "Gen02(AU)".  Razz

I don't know what timeline/universe PSVT is working on, but if it's one where the "regular" Gen02 programme was run, there would certainly be an argument for Valentina being Gen03, or even Gen2.5. At the end of the day though, I guess it's probably up to the author as to how they want to frame it...

...from a purely marketing the story standpoint: I'll admit, seeing "Gen03" is, for me, a mark against wanting to read a story. That's personal taste of course, but it is another angle.

So long as they have the deathclock, the dependency on the handlers, the moral ambiguity, etc. I'm fine.

What I don't to see is Gen3 being used as a catchall excuse to god.mode.

Unfortunately "Gen3" does tend to get used as an excuse for godmode, hence my tendency to loose interest immediately upon seeing the reference. I know I shouldn't dismiss things out of hand like that, but there it is.

I do recognize the existing Generation 2 cyborg program in the world I'm building for my story, and Valentina is not a replacement of the Generation 2 program but more of an extension of it. Maybe the developments could be used for a future 3rd generation, however Valentina herself is still very similar to the Gen 2 cyborgs despite the computer and antenna implants. In essence, at worst she could be a Gen 2.5. A completely new build program would be needed to create a true Gen 3 cyborg in my universe.

A solution for the death clock, even in that case, is still a very, very long way off, however.

I've very little experience with people attempting to codify Gen3, but I have to agree with you - the fics I've read seem quite closer to wish-fulfillment/god-moding than actual drama.
