Crossovers...

Post by Guest on Wed 20 Feb 2008 - 11:56

Thinking of combining anime for the fun of it...

I've tried combining School Rumble and Gunslinger Girl; working on it, but not even close to continuing it.
...what would happen if the girls got themselves Air Treks (Air Gear)? Would it be interesting to see them sliding down railways, jumping from building to building in Rome taking down Padanias in a flash...?

...or a Diclonii operative? That would render guns obsolete...but the handlers...

...what about Alchemy Girls? Pushing the girls into the world of Fullmetal Alchemists working for Amestrian Military as the state alchemists?

...How about putting Madlax against the Gunslinger Girls? See who fought till' the end!

...or Lucy against Section 2?

...How about pitting them against Crypterians (or whatever its spelled), fighting side by side with the guys and Saya from Blood+?

...making them into servants of Yoshitaka (He is my Master)?

...pitting them against 'Kira' and his Death Note?

Any ideas or wierd crossovers? Might as well see them as a 'hero squad' unit in Command and Conquer 3... :p

Combining Gunslinger Girl and Elfen Lied has has always been a crossover I wanted to write. ^_^

Gunslinger Girl and FullMetal Alchemist is a really goo concept too... I'm thinking or a plot right now as I type. @_@

Well that's all the ideas I have for now, I know it's not much, but those are the one I really like! ^_^

I had an idea for a Gunslinger Girl/Monk crossover... but the latest episode of Monk crushed that idea. If I were to write it, I'd need to start from scratch. Although Sasahara had some good ideas on it.

That Haruhi crossover would probably be cool though.

I have a crossover idea in my mind - something no-one else has probably thought of. But I'm keeping it under wraps until the final product is published.

Monk? as in Adrian Monk? (Yes, that Show is also on Dutch Television.)

If it is, then That would be one hell of a laughter generator. think of the strange Cyborg you might end up with him as the teacher/Handler :p

@ Nachtsider: Well i sure wouldn't mind giving that a read then.

I JUST got the idea of combining Gunslinger Girls with Mecha Musumes...

Triela in a 'Panzer IV' battle suit or Henrietta in an 'M4A1 Sherman' Combat suit seems nice... Razz

Here's another wierd crossover: Naruto vs the Gunslinger Girls!

...I could seriously use the girls to pwn the ninjas to oblivion!!

well the idea to cross Mecha Musumes seems fun. i dont really knew Mecha Musumes, but i have seen things fly by left and right.

but as to Naruto VC the GSG's; I dont really see the girls Pwning the Ninja's there. i mean, the focus is totatlly differant combat wise.

A Gunslinger Girl/Monk crossover needn't necessarily have Adrian Monk become a handler; perhaps the story has the SWA working with him on a criminal case of some kind.

Thanks for the offer, Tommy. I'll be sure to notify you once the story's done.

Ok, still the thought would be funny like hell. i mean if Adrian were to train a Cyborg then... oh shit i dont even know how it would turn out.

You would probibly get a Cyborg with no Combat experiance but a extreme dose of "Hygene" knowladge and one heck of a uncanny ability to do detective work like Adrian does. Very Happy

actually, the death note only works on the person's names, so will writing Claes on the notebook kill Claes or does Kira need to write Fleda?

LOL

He'll have to write 'Fleda Claes Johannson' to kill her :p

I think the real given name is what counts, not the new name.

If so, 'L' would've died long...

I don't know most of the series you've mentioned so far Panzer. Why not Gunslinger Girls vs GODZILLA! No that's just silly.

I'm looking around my room for ideas. I see Gordon Freeman, and Assassins Creed. Assassins Creed Gunslinger Girl cross over sounds kind of awesome. Let me go through my movies: Full metal panic, Cowboy bebop, Trigun, James Bond, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Jay and Silent Bob? Those are ones that could be made to work. Mr. and Mrs. Smith seems like a strangely interesting one to me. I guess they would raise one like a kid or something? I don't know I need to think about that one....

LOL!

How about Gunslinger Girl: The Hunt for Sweeny Todd (did I spell that right?)

It'll be something 18-19th century-ish with the girls wielding...muskets? Haven't watch the movie actually but will be soon... Very Happy

just an idea: A fratello disappeared mysteriously after their visit to a barber shop. Now the girls were tasked on hunting the culprit as one by one they went missing...

Ooh! This is wierd...
300: The little Spartan Girls

"THIS IS SPARTAAAAA!!!"

no that won't work...

i was thinking more under the lines of, Claes coming across the Death Note in her library. uses it to help the girls and take revenge on those who took Rabalo from her.

Hmm...now it got me wondering about Claes' "Dark Side"...

I wonder how she'll use the notebook and to who... (she, being the simple one, could keep her hands clean as she kill members of Padania and/or Section 2/1 without anyone noticing) ...hahaha

But on how the girls take on Kira, I think, despite the impossible-ness, its possible. Kira would right the girl's 'new' name--not the given one. So they would--I think--survive the initial impact.

Wow wileama!

you just made a good idea there.

Dumping the girls into a "Mister and misses Smith" type situation.

of course it would have to the same cast as grownups, which in cannon seems rather unlikely... I can see it happen already as a more comidy based series rather then a serious story line.

Hmm... I guess I'll leave that idea for now, i have way to many things to complete anyway... but who knows.

Re: Crossovers...

Post by Probit Return on Thu 21 Feb 2008 - 14:10

Wow, topic explosion since I've been gone. Yeah, when I said Monk, I meant Adrian. As I said in the story idea thread, it would involve Monk and company heading to Italy to find more info on his wife's murder and eventually running into the little death machines. But last Friday's episode revealed some stuff that killed that idea, but i might be able to salvage it with tomorrow's episode so there's still hope that I don't have to almost totally rework it.

I've been mulling over a crossover with the Boondock Saints too where the McManus brothers get roped into the SWA due to their "Holy Crusade" and end up as handlers. Of course, there would have to be another fight over whether or not rope should be incorperated into missions (you'd have to see the movie for it to be explained properly).

Boondock huh? i have seen and heard something about that on Dutch television.

didn't really pay attention though

the Monk idea seems good though, you can still make it as a 'What if' cross over where things are slightly differant. it would still work i guess as per the funny factor being Munk him self.

The Boondock Saints is a movie over here in the states. It follows two religious Irish brothers who, after killing a couple of mobsters in self defense, decide to go on a holy quest to rid the world of all who are "evil." I found a bootleg on youtube, split up into 11 parts. If you want me to pm you the link, I can since I have no idea how avalable it is over in Holland.

Saikano elements can be found in Sheo's 'Life Goes On' epic, Panzer. It's the best Gunslinger Girl fanfic anywhere on the Web, if you ask me.

Okay real quick the abbreviation for Wileama is Wil.

Second all Pokemon can burn. Other things like Neo-pets, or what ever the hell I don't mind as much. It's not the monsters I mind. It's the stupid merch culture around Pokemon. That, and the yellow rat, as I will refer to him, is the bane of Super Smash Brother players everywhere.

Nah, he can't be as bad as E. Honda or Dahlsim users on Street Fighter 2. I mean come on. Honda has more then just one damn move that creates a damn wall of hands and Dahlsims just annoying for the fact that he can punch you from across the screen.

And if I don't spend my day trying to finally get finished with Persona 3, I'll be starting to type up my GSG/Boondock Saints crossover today. *Thinks of a way to incorperate Greenly into it* I mean, come on, that serial crusher theory was awesome.

*agrees with Wil on the Pokemon thing*
except in SSBB. I'm not a yellow rat player... but to me, the whole appeal of that game is its unbridled chaos, and he adds to it. As Yahtzee said, there's only so good you can get at banging your head against the controller like a circus seal (attempting to engage in melee combat in the game). Evasion and survival tactics, however, can get a little complex... especially with the storm rat around (and ah love eet).
... that's enough about my usual Wii party game...
I mostly remember that when it came out, Pokemon ruined a whole lot of good things with its massive merchandise campaigning.
looking back, that was probably a good thing, since it got me to distance myself a bit from video games and anime, and caused me to give up CCGs altogether (only ever played one, and quit shortly after this came out. I'm glad I did).

I'll admit it. I'm not a fan of crossovers. Well, maybe that should be corrected.

I'm not a fan of most crossovers. Mostly because when you start doing that you're adding in elements to one (or both) stories that neither series makes any sense in and you end up with a confusing, confuddled mess.

Then again...isn't that the point of crossovers?

Perhaps I've just read some horrible crossovers in my day.

I once read one about Sonic the Hedgehog and The Hobbit. I shit you not. Was the stupidest thing on the internet at the time. Tails beating up Smaug while Sonic is cutting trolls in half...god my IQ just dropped being reminded of it.

We shall never speak of "it" again.

One good crossover I can remember was between Metroid and Aliens. It probably helped that the two settings actually happened to mesh well.

Unlike a crossover involving italian plumbers joining the National Hockey League to win a date with a flaky princess...*loses more IQ*

Maybe I just punish myself unduly.

I actually read a very good story on fanfiction.net that crossed Sherlock Holmes and Star Wars. It's called Elementary, My Dear Obiwan. It has excellent characterization, and Watson and Holmes are able to be useful despite the power imbalance.

As for crossing over Gunslinger Girls? I wouldn't mind seeing or doing a Justice League Unlimited crossover, though it would need to exclude the more members of the League to retain a sense of conflict. I would love a scenario where the core seven get wind of the cyborg project and have to decide whether shutting it down is worth crippling Italy's defense against terrorism, and hence endangering the economic stability of the country (therefore forcing thousands out of there jobs, and putting them at risk of starvation). It would be fascinating to see the interplay of personalities, and the opinions of each Leaguer.

I'm still trying to work out an Indiana Jones/Hellboy crossover. *Laughs*

I'd be up to seeing a Gunslinger Girls/Fate/Stay Night crossover. Maybe feature the girls as summons? That would be amusing, but a bit difficult to work out, probably.

Mmm...Gunslinger Girls/Lucky Star. That one has awesome potential for craziness. Or if I was really in the mood, for depression and darkness...

Oooo...Gunslinger Girls/Maria-sama ga Miteru! Now there's an idea. Infiltration mission for one of the girls to observe Sachiko-sama. The Osagawara group is under suspicion for weapons smuggling to Padania and other terrorist groups...Ah...Mmm...That reeks of goodness.

Crossover = hard to write but awesomely fun to think of.

I can agree with that. I tried working on a plan for a Harry Potter/Nasuverse crossover by fitting a 'Mystic Eyes of Death' onto Harry. Didn't quite work. Not to memntion, Harry's 'Familiar' could rip a Basilisk in two and be home in time for tea. The rules that governed the Nasuverse were so foreign to the Nasuvere, not to mention the themes of their narratives, were so incompatible I eventually scrapped the idea. I went on to try developing a Gundam/Macross Crossover. No doubt anyone familiar with such a thing knows how foolish I was to even try researching the topic of whether a Valk would beat an MS.

I shit you not. Was the stupidest thing on the internet at the time.
Tails beating up Smaug while Sonic is cutting trolls in half...god my
IQ just dropped being reminded of it.

We shall never speak of "it" again.
You're shitting me. Sonic in Middle Earth? How the heck does THAT work?

Macavity wrote:I'd be up to seeing a Gunslinger Girls/Fate/Stay Night crossover. Maybe feature the girls as summons? That would be amusing, but a bit difficult to work out, probably.
I think that will be a bit difficult, seeing as how the rules that govern the Nasuverse are radically different from our own. However if you can pull it off, I'll be really, really happy. Many of the F/SN fics in existance right now aren't that novel. I'd caution about making all the girls summons, since they would naturally know each other's weaknesses and defeat any chance of a 'oh crap it's Heracles' moment as well as seeming cliche and everything. But hey it's your fic.

You now have my attention.

I have to agree. i once tried to write a crossover. About as successful as a trainwreck that one was. I'm not afraid to admit it was a textbook case of Good idea, horrible execution. Doesn't stop us my laughing our asses at the mere thought of them though.

@rusty-spring wrote:I'm not a fan of most crossovers. Mostly because when you start doing that you're adding in elements to one (or both) stories that neither series makes any sense in and you end up with a confusing, confuddled mess.

Then again...isn't that the point of crossovers?
No crossovers are not about making a confusing confuddled mess. At least not in my book. Unless maybe your going for satire, and that's what your aiming for. To me a crossover is about taking elements you like from two different stories, and mixing them together to complement each other. Like of example the idea of Gunslinger Girl, Harry Dresden crossover appeals to me for a couple of reasons. First is that Harry Dresden is a cool dude, and it would be fun to see him fight cyborgs. More importantly though Harry Dresden is a fairly morale person. It would be interesting to see how Harry reacts to the idea of the SWA, and what kind of actions he would take as a result. That and the idea of mixing the traditional story telling of Gunslinger Girl with some hard boiled detective story telling of the Dresden Files also sounds cool.

Think of it like cooking, Some things go well together, while others don't. How well things work together depends on a number of things. Execution being one of the major problems the internet faces. I'm sure you've had ginger chicken before that you loved. However that same combination could much more easily be done wrong. To much ginger, or a dry chicken could ruin a story like that. Another part of the problem is that people just throw things they love together. Some of these things mix well like Meteoroid, and Aliens. In my case it's cereal, and orange juice. At this point personnel taste starts to matter too. If you didn't like Batman, a Gunslinger Girl crossover with the Dark Knight might not appeal to you. Then there are the things that should never be made, like bacon, and egg flavored ice cream. [Yes I actually had to try that ice cream, and it was god awful] The same way Pokemon should never be crossed with Gunslinger Girl.

Ultimately though I think the problem is execution with most crossovers. People just seem to throw two series they like together without thinking it through. There is no other way to explain why there are so many Gundam Wing, and Sailor Moon crossovers. In cooking it's hard to hide if something is god awful. Unfortunately writing, at least on the internet, doesn't suffer the fate. I once tried to make a soup when I was a young boy. I throw a whole bunch of things I loved together, with the help of my sister. The family had some, and gave me lots of praise. I knew the soup sucked. See I had made it with water instead of some kind of broth. I never made that mistake again. Such basic errors don't seem apparent to most writers of fan fiction. If it where, I imagine there would be a lot less garbage out there. Which is also why most cross overs suck. Even if the story elements they throw together are good, the part that holds it all together, the writing, often sucks.

Apologies, I didn't mean to portray the idea that I think all crossovers are nothing but messes, but like you mentioned, there are WAAAAAAY more crossovers that aren't executed right and end up becoming big giant flustercucks. I totally agree that a crossover isn't just shoving two worlds you like together and try to make a soufflé.

I have read some good crossovers. Just that the bad ones have just soured me from sampling crossovers as much as I probably could.

Tell you the truth that's how I feel about Fan Fiction in general, or at least how I felt about it once upon a time. I was so tired of wading through the shit pile for the occasion diamond, or more frequent lump of coal. Hanging around here has made it easier to find the good stuff. I'm also not as quick to judge something as being awful. Still I don't read Fan Fiction nearly that frequently, and doubt I ever will.

@ Wil's post... the big one.

This makes so much sence. It's very difficult to find two seperate series/stories/books/whatevers that can mesh really well though.

However, while it is ture that it's quite rare to find a crossover with two 'incompatible' series that actually flows well they do, against all probablility exist. Normally they have one heck of a skilled writer behind them as well as a phenominal amount of research behind them, but they DO indeed exist.

Still I have to agree most writers throw two series together and hope for the best. Best way to avoid disasters like that I feel is run it by someone else first, with extensive research of course, before jumping into it. Despite that It's still possible to mess up.

This is coming from someone who has this poor abandoned crossover fic at the bottom of his FF.net profile. 'It seemed like a nice idea at the time'. *sigh*.

Re: Crossovers...

Post by Wileama on Tue 27 May 2008 - 5:34

Well it's always easier to do a cross over if you don't take it to seriously. Also the sliders concept more, or less means that you can avoid a lot of the silliness of how you link the worlds of say Evangelion, and Full Metal Alchemist together. Which is one of the biggest problems of cross overs, getting the characters to meet in a reasonable way. After you've done that the next hurdle is making a realistic story that combines the two. Which I don't think is much harder then writing any other story. However considering how often people seem to fail at even that on fanfiction.net...

As to 'incompatible' series. Okay it's always possible to write a story that is subjectively good, and yet another too write one that appeals to people. There was a visa commercial that had chocolate covered jalapeño. There is a part of my brain that recognizes that could be defined as tasty, I still don't want it. In the same way a part of my brain realizes that as the their crowning literary achievement someone could write a story that involved Pokemon, and Gusnlinger that was not in fact bad. Yet I would still want to beat them for it. It's just one of those things.
