Pretty impressive, Pete and Elly alike! I like how the pot has become Pete now. You can't separate the two. Razz And as of the actual designs, yeah, I can definitely see them on a T-shirt, and I can also see more than a few here picking up one, myself included.

I need to draw more, feels like I'm getting rusty. This took longer than usual to get finished, and I'm not really sold on the background. Cool concept though. I was imagining some far-fetched scenario like a surf competition or beach concert in a dangerous country, where the its not uncommon for police to open carry assault rifles. South Africa? Mexico? Somewhere like that maybe. Or maybe it was just an excuse to draw a cool wetsuit that I saw online... We may never know.

fun fact: The pier shes under is actually my best shot at replicating Sharky's Pier, just a few minutes drive from where I live! Its a cool hangout spot. unfortunately i have little patience for backgrounds, and they tend to be afterthoughts. *facepalm*

The white background version:

feetsies are hard to draw

The feetsies are just fine. Nice coloring, and the little smile is gold. I like the background too, good work on the perspective and the color palette, but you're right, it seems to have some issues, particularly with light sources and shading.
I like your choice of firearm. P90s are about as cool and futurific as Steyrs. But am I mistaken, or shouldn't it be a tad smaller?

thanks man. I have so much trouble with lighting its freaking frustrating. About the P90, I made a scale based on Elly being 5'4" (about 160cm), and the P90 being 50cm long. so im pretty sure its spot on in terms of length. but I probably drew something wrong and its throwing it off somehow.

Hmm, perhaps a powerful Mafiosio's party, a doting parent throwing something on for their kid's coming of age?

First up, Elly looks great in this one, the way you've used the tones etc to pick up her facial structure in particular has come up well. As to feet, well... those are a bastard at the best of times. Gut feel: the P90 is probably fine scale wise. Because the girls are smaller than the average adult, weapons tend to look large in their hands. I know I scaled an AK-47 for Monty at one point but, because she's 5'4" and a beanpole, it looks massive compared to her.

Regarding the background, in isolation it's probably fine, like there's a natural sunset coming from the right, and floods (from a stage or similar) on the left. Together with Elly however, both don't quite gel into a single picture. You say it was an afterthought and, well, to be brutally honest: it looks it. Normally, when I intend to do a full picture, and once the sketch is done, I'll rough in the background tones first. Doing so gives you something to judge the subject's colouring against, and lets you set up light sources early. Then I'll render the subject, and then finish the background (I actually remembered to save some in-progress stuff from my last picture... one of these day's I'll get around to stitching it into a "process" sheet)... which can be a dull process at times, I find it helps to have something to watch or listen to, eg. Harry Potter audiobooks (because wow, drawing grass is possibly one of the least interesting things I've ever had to do). Rendering subject-first, for me at least, rarely seems to produce a particularly "together", or interesting, end result. One or the other, but rarely both. It's one of the reasons movies with heavy use of green screen often wind up with very flat lighting, or lots of post-production work, so as to ensure the cgi backdrop and filmed actors can mesh together.

As it is, Elly could probably use some orange highlights on the sunset side of her, and rendering to match the main light source and pier above, rather than a transparency(?) standing in for a shadow.

Either way mate, as I said, in isolation, both look pretty good, it's just the integration which seems to be tripping you up.  Razz

thanks for the write up. I really need to plan my drawings ahead of time. I might go back and fix the lighting a little bit, but its going to take some time and effort to pull this one out of the toilet haha!

edit: I added some quick lighting changes before i turned the lights out. slight improvement.

Nah, if the P90 is that long, everything's good. I had the impression that it was a rather smaller weapon.

Thanks man guys! I was thinking there would be a flash bang or something going off. but I just realized that she's also protecting her weak spot from bullets.

It's infinitely easier to draw a good pose when using paper and pencils!

It's not cheating, it's "post production".  Razz

Not bad mate. About the only comment I have is that there could perhaps be a bit more shadow definition around where there is a change in levels on her. For example, where her shorts cross her leg closest the viewer I would be tempted to wrap the shadow on her leg up a little under them to show the fabric sitting proud, ditto on the same shadow line where it crosses under he vest.

Still though, nice work.

Thanks Alf!

Now that I look at it, I agree about the shadow definition. I tend to over-work certain elements of my drawings, and it usually ends up looking like crap. So with this one I was really trying to not over-work anything. I guess over-working isn't always bad, but I probably just overwork the wrong areas. That's why I put visibly less effort into the shadow, and colour in general.

Basically, I need to stop spending time polishing turds, and spend that time learning how to not make turds in the first place. Very Happy

Well, at the end of the day, I guess the trick is figuring out where to draw the line between "overworking" and "making it polished"... or, at least, taking something from an 80% work to a 95% (because, let's be honest here, I don't think we ever make it to a 100% work). Bear in mind too that "95%" doesn't necessarily mean something carefully rendered and perfectly presented either, just something which looks polished in the style you were aiming for... which can mean a simplified rendering style or rough background etc.

Personally, I think one of the better ways to help draw the distinction between overworking something and just polishing is to, once you think you're done, walk away for a day, or leave it open in another window and go, do something else (only God knows how many Youtube videos I've paused halfway through to go and touch something up, or how any mental lists of "things to do" I've made in the shower... then shaved poorly as I was in a hurry to get back), and just glance at it occasionally. When you do come back, run a critical eye over it and ask "does this need anything else?" Taking the break and putting your mind somewhere else though is important as it helps prevent you chasing your own tail, madly trying to fix perceived errors, and making things worse, rather than tackling the thing as a whole and thinking about why you're making one change or another in the context of the complete piece.

That's funny on multiple levels lol

I work in the marketing department for the company as a whole. hundreds of club locations all across the USA and Canada. So much better than pouring coffee or flipping burgers!

I think I actually made negative progress with this drawing. Didn't know that was possible.

I've been working 40 hour weeks sitting at a desk, and the last thing I want to do when I get home is sit in front of a computer. Because of that I don't draw so much anymore. I'm rusty to say the least.

You criticize yourself too much. This pic might be simpler and 'flatter' than preceding offerings, but proportion and anatomy are good and there are no mistakes. The pose is simple and not very dynamic, but shooting at a range isn't very dynamic, now is it? You're not as rusty as you think, just pressed for time and energy.

As for your job ... are you wishing you were pouring coffee or flipping burgers yet?

I mentioned on dA that I had the whole thing coloured and it just looked like crap, so I took the easy way out and banged it out in flat colours. Sad I thought by now I'd be able to colour things... Thanks for the kind words though c:

I love the job, I'm just not used to full time hours. And especially not used to looking at a screen the whole time. I'll get used to it eventually.

Sucks that you've not so much time to draw anymore, but even as busy as you are your pic of Elly is still a nice one in my opinion. Way better than you seem to think.

Can't get better without practice. Ask Alfisti. (By the way, he seems mysteriously dissatisfied with some of his earliest works, which I still think are great.)

Oh, it is entirely possible, believe me... and is a familiar and unwelcome feeling. I know I often look back at some of my older works, not all of them, but some of the better ones, and think "why didn't my most recent effort look that good?" There's all sorts of reasons for a newer picture to not turn out as well as you had hoped: maybe you're rushing, or you're not paying attention, or lack a head/heart that is entirely in the game this time around (and it probably doesn't help that you tend to remember the good images rather than the bad ones). Sometimes it simply comes down to having figured something out previously, and then gone back to old habits. While the former you can't always help except by moving on and trying again on something you're more enthusiastic about, the latter is easier addressed. Look back at your old works, figure out what was working and what wasn't. For me, for example, it's often to do with rendering, and having to remind myself that what looks good in a finished piece often feels extraordinarily unnatural during the production phase.

Sometimes it's a matter of making the conscious decision to slow the fuck down, accept that producing what you're imagining is going to take some time, and giving yourself the opportunity to concentrate and do things properly.

As TSM noted though: you can't get better without practise. If you don't feel like looking at a computer monitor, whip out a pen and paper. Buy some markers, a Molskine, and go find a coffee shop (some advice I could stand to heed a little as well) or something.

Regarding the pic itself, I don't think it's all doom and gloom. Your anatomy, expression, and detailing are still excellent. I don't know if you were going for a fairly structured/static layout, but the pose does look a bit wooden. Try holding it yourself: the upper torso will want to twist with the arm which she is reaching back with, even just a little. If you flipped the image so her gun hand was to the rear, it would be an easy way to put some motion into it. Now, not being a shooter I couldn't say if what you have there is correct from a technical standpoint, but sometimes it's also worth figuring out where you need to allow yourself some artistic license.

Other than that, the folds in her shirt and vest seem a little messy compared to the rest of the lineart and don't appear to be stretching with her motion. If you're coming back from colours, you'll also need to adjust your lines to suit, as you lose the ability to extend those, or show folds and how the fabric pulls, with light and shadow. Your style is quite clean, so perhaps fewer, but longer, lines for folds?

Either way mate, it still looks good. Real life getting in the way sucks, but fear not, you soon figure out how to trade sleep to make up for it.  Razz

thanks for the advice. I guess it just comes down to more practice. And the folds absolutely were an afterthought. When I took out the colours initially, there was nothing to indicate that there was a shirt there, so I put some lines and called it done.

It was going to be great in my head, but it was just a reminder of how bad I suck despite years of work haha. thats what it feels like anyways. ill get some markers.

Looks really nice there, TeaTime. Elly's learned some firearm handling techniques that I'm not quite sure she got from Pete. And that shirt. At this stage of the game, I don't think anyone in a position to read that shirt will have enough time to comprehend the words. Anyway, keep it up, man!
