Carried Away with Elly & Pete

Post by TeaTimeNinja on Sat 9 Aug 2014 - 19:07

Introducing my new comic project "Carried Away", inspired by Alfisti himself. I'll post one page at a time most likely, and you guys can read it here without having to scroll through the forum.

OC's are handler Pete Rönnholm and cyborg Elly.

I'll try to get better...
More to come.

I don't have enough time to colour them, so they're black and white. Sad. I'll work on the next few pages tomorrow.

Good work so far, and I want to see where this goes. Interested in seeing what Pete has done in the past to place him in someone's crosshairs.

I wasn't even on that train of thought. It would add some depth to Pete. Since I'm making this up as I go, lets go with that scenario.

Which brings me to say; if anyone wants their OC to make a celebrity appearance, or if anyone has an idea for where the story should go, post it here and I'll make it happen.

might post page 2 tonight..

Perhaps not her hand, something slightly less cool.

In my mind, she just glanced off into the distance and happened to see the shooter poking out from the treeline. Perfect timing, eh? That's the best I got haha.

For now, here's a crappy picture of a sketch I did at work. We're not allowed to have paper and pens, cause we work with peoples credit card information. Kind of sad. I made this on lunch break.

Re: Carried Away with Elly & Pete

Post by Alfisti on Thu 21 Aug 2014 - 6:28

Using just the read on the greyscale background to pick out Elly's injury is a nice touch. I like it.

Now, some critique: there are a few inconsistencies background wise that would be worth noting for next time. The bridge parapet, for example, runs right to the ground in the top-right panel but, on the next down, it suddenly ends in a column. It still does the job, but it can be distracting for the viewer.

From a visual story telling perspective, in the "Bloody hell! Are you hit?!" panel, it might have been worthwhile to show Elly opening up her violin case in the background. At the moment she goes from being injured and unarmed, to suddenly being on the ball and holding a rifle. It's easy enough admittedly, particularly for those familiar with the series, to fill in the gaps. Again though, it's jarring, and can cause the reader to backtrack looking for what they missed. If you can smooth the sequence of events out for them, then so much the better.

Still, looking good.

I noticed the bridge, i guess that's what happens when it i rarely have free time to work on it. I might go back and fix it.

In my rough copy i had a small panel where elly opened her case, but it was small and out of place. Maybe one day ill get batter at the layout. But today is not that day.

my main goal is to get better at drawing just for now. I want to not suck at the basics before i attempt a masterpiece!

thanks a lot for the feedback, ill edit some things.

I dunno if Elly taking her rifle out needs its own panel, too many of the things can make the page cluttered. Personally I would have put it in the background of the shot of Pete crouched down with his pistol out. It saves a panel and gives the viewer the impression of a few things happening at once.

Up to you if you want to go back and edit or not. I know when I was running Jethro+Monty's comic my preference was to just keep that sort of thing in mind for next time. Going back broke my momentum with the thing, and the whole thing was treated as a learning experience. Fortunately, at the end of the day, it's your toy, so you can do with it as you will. Very Happy

Just a thought: looking over the picture of Elly being cute with the gun it occurred to me, maybe poor Pete was depressed and Elly was trying to cheer him up?
Then I wondered, what if a handler had clinical depression requiring  medication?
Hmm, a fratello where both cyborg and handler require drugs in order to function properly, lol.
Not saying ofcourse that your fratello is this way, simply that it seemed to me like an interesting idea.  Puzzled  Razz

You're bang-on about the depression. Pete is a cynical pessimistic guy. Elly is a tad less so, but only a tad. I'm not sure about medication, I feel like Pete would be to proud to take anything for his 'depression'.

That is totally something I'm going to consider, though, since you've said it. That would be interesting if they both needed their meds to operate.

Beauteous. Pete's suit is very lustrous, looks like it's made of satin by the shine: kind of flashy for a guy who's battling depression. One gets the impression that the background lighting is quite bright and diffuse, but Ell's clothing absorbs it more than Pete's by which I guess the material is softer.

Gawd, she's actually got her finger on the trigger! Didn't notice that in the black-and-white version.

It's very nice work, TT. Don't be surprised if you get some commission requests.

Thanks man. Glad I appear to be getting the hang of it a little bit. It'll hopefully get better with age!

Great job with the update. It's somewhat hard to tell who is speaking in the fourth panel. Also, it's funny that the sniper has a barrel magazine on his rifle. He must be living by the creed, "one magazine, one kill." Wink

Thanks!

The drum mag isn't even the weird part of the sniper. What's weird is the fact that the guy is using an RPK instead of an actual sniper rifle.

In the 4th panel Pete is the one talking. In all honesty, they're both wondering where the shooter went, so at least no matter who said it, it made sense lol.

Hmm looks like the enemy is calling it quits... for now.
Or is he expecting them to follow?
Either way, I'm sure they are about to learn not to f@ck with the Elly/Pete fratello!

This is the reason I haven't finished another page of the comic yet. Behold; Elly and Monty. Monty has class, Elly has chaos.

It's also my new id picture. Probably not for long though...

I hope I did Monty justice, sorry in advanced if I didn't. I put in a lot of effort, hope you like it.
It's 3:30am in Ontario, I should probably sleep.

Nice mate, very nice. I still think Monty looks a little surprised/shocked for Monty, though it's less prevalent in the full dA view. I think it's the whites of her eyes: showing them all the way around the iris tends to make people look surprised, shocked or angry.

Other than that, I like how you've carried the colours from their clothes into the backgrounds as well. It looks good, and helps pull the whole picture together. Thanks a heap mate.

Out of curiosity, how tall is Elly? Monty's 5'4", and I've always thought her one of the shorter gen 02s... though some of that may be a result of me having been creating larger cyborgs of late.

Then again, having another cyborg photobomb her picture would probably surprise Monty...

I'll change the eyes when I get off work today.

I don't even have a solid height for Elly, but its in the neighborhood of 5'5". For the sake of the picture (And forgetting how tall Monty is) I just made them the appear the same height.

Glad you like it, even though Monty seems out of character.
