the narration panel is just a continuation of what the gentleman on the phone is saying. There's no actual narrator. for now hahaha.

I reused the line work of that tv from an older drawing because I love the look of em. And who's kidding who? I was lazy.

I think they need to fund section two, so they can enjoy modern telly technology.

Nice mate. I too like the old telly. Razz

Carrying on a bit from the narration vs. TV vs. phonecall discussion above, one way to help avoid confusion is to vary the style of your speech bubbles: so have one style for anything coming from a tv, or over the radio, another for speech, etc. In the case of continuing the phone conversation, what you can do is run the speech between panels by linking two bubbles together through the divide like so. Not only does it provide a visual cue as to who is talking, but also helps draw the reader's eye through the scenes smoothly.

Yeah I should have done that. I figured that if I changed the scene I should separate the speech bubbles for some reason.

I just finished moving back to Florida, and getting my motorcycle looked at. Now I can finally draw a little bit. (in between business card/post card designing, mind you.)

I'm planning on drawing some junk before I get to the chapter one cover. Now that I've finished the prologue I want to take a short break and just doodle. I'll post whatever I come up with on here, and I'll get back into the comic shortly.

It is nice to just draw as you feel like for a bit. I was feeling pretty burned out after finishing MiI, and I suspect part of that was not having a lot of time to draw much more than the odd picture here and there. A few months off from that seems to have helped a lot.

Plus, lets be honest here, I bit of variety doesn't hurt either. As much as I love working with Monty, it was nice to draw a few different things: different styles, different body types, different personalities, for a change.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Thank you! The answer to your question is winter! (I didn't draw her wearing her white helmet, or her white rifle, which really completes the look)

Fair enough. I think it was the non-wintery body armour etc. that threw me though, I guess, if no-one is paying for extra kit...

also, Petes new toy. (I drew this at work, because no one came in. I literally got paid to draw.)

Alf; I feel your pain of drawing curved reflective surfaces..... Nuke I also only used two layers. lines and colour. so its sloppy. I kinda like it sloppy for once.

Both of your pics are looking very nice, man! That bike does look absolutely amazing--though I wouldn't be surprised if you made like Alfi and decided to never draw a bike again. You're also making me hyped for Chapter 1. Wink

Camouflage is weird. For some reason, it's deemed perfectly okay to wear colors that make one stand out like a sore thumb (e.g. that brown body armor on white). Go figure

It is painful. Though the result is usually worth the effort.

I actually find that using only a few layers actually makes blending and rendering a lot easier at times: most of my backgrounds tend to be done on only one or two layers.

For the pain though, the bike looks good, and your posing is really coming along.

I realize that none of you guys are really exploding with anticipation for the rest of the story, but I thought I should give an update: I'm almost done with page 1. I've been procrastinating and doing other things lately, so that's why it's taking so long.

Not to mention, I have to draw some freakishly detailed things, which is another reason for the tardiness.

I'll try to post it real soon.

Re: Carried Away with Elly & Pete

Post by TeaTimeNinja on Mon 8 Dec 2014 - 18:00

Since I didn't want to make a new thread, or make a FF.net account, I'll post this short snippet here. This is just a small demo of my grade 2 level writing ability. I'm a lot better with a paint brush than with a keyboard! (please feel free to point out all my formatting and grammar errors)

Demo: A Typical Morning
12/8/14

The dorms at the S.W.A were quiet and dark at this time of morning. Quiet and dark being relative terms. The dorms were also depressing, but that's not important. What was important, however, was the alarm clock sounding. A clammy hand reached over to the clock and mindlessly patted the top, in desperate search of the snooze button. Clicking it didn't bring the comforting silence that Elly expected.

What a big fat lie, she thought as she reached for the plug and pulled it. Silence filled the room for all of five seconds before thumping was heard next door. I guess that's just it then, she thought, I'm awake.

Elly ripped the blanket off herself and a shiver ran down her spine. This was a particularly cold morning in Italy, and the tile floor in the small bathroom was as cold as ice. She looked into the mirror as she ran the tap. Looking at herself in mild disgust, she put her finger under the stream of water. In severe disgust, she took her finger out of the freezing water, and wiped it on her plain white t shirt.

Why does the water take so long to get warm? She wondered as she grabbed a towel from the rack. This shower oughta be good.

-----------------------------------
After a solid five minute shower under lukewarm water, Elly decided she would spoil herself and wear something comfortable. All this Agency business was becoming exhausting, so a slow day seemed overdue. A smile crept across her still-wet face, not a smirk, or a sarcastic crack; a genuine smile. Of course this only lasted a mere second, and was ended by the buzzing of her phone on the nightstand.

"Gear up. going into town this morning. I'll be there in 10, bring a backpack." It was Pete.

Elly clicked the phone off.

"Perfect..." She said with a sigh. She made it a whole fifteen minutes into her Monday without one. There goes the comfortable dress day. She glared with hatred at a pile of clothes in the corner of her room, and shuddered. She then went over to the window and opened the curtain, finding no reassurance.

While lacing up her shoes she thought to herself, There's only one thing that could make this morning worse. As she stood to her feet and grasped the cold brass door knob in her hand, she heard it; the unmistakable sound of Pete's motorcycle.

"That."

Hmp. I think you have a nice touch, actually. Errors are few. I'd make some edits to eliminate a couple redundancies (style-wise, I'm a Strunkian writer), but everything else is rock-solid storytelling.

One nitpick, however: since when do girls in the cyborg dorm have private bathrooms?

I wasn't sure what they had, and because this was more just a test run, I didn't bother fact checking. If I ever consider writing anything for real, I might actually invest some time.

Thanks for the input!

Agreed with TSM, not bad at all mate.

Could use a bit of cleaning up in some places, for example, it could probably use a new paragraph between her shiver after throwing off the blanket, as there is nothing to link her getting from there to the bathroom (which, as TSM also pointed out, I'm fairly certain are not private for the cyborgs). At the core though, it's solid work.

As an aside: I thought Elly liked bikes.

Pretty good effort with the writing there, good sir! A few niggling grammatical issues here and there, but I would say that it's solid overall. I certainly enjoy that I get a bit more of a glimpse at Elly's personality. Have to feel sorry for the poor girl--she can't seem to catch a break at all. I wonder by how much such terrible situations would translate into her daily life in the comic.

Thanks for the comment! She never catches a break, that's her thing lol. I hope I can translate this bad luck into the comic.

I'm chipping away at the next page. Progress is slow because I've been doing a couple design commissions (post cards/pamphlets). Since I'll be going to school for design in January, I figure I might as well start early. I've also spend the last two days driving all over south Florida test riding motorcycles for my friend. jeez I've been so busy!

I've lost motivation lately, that's why this page took ages. I hope I'll be in the mood for drawing in the near future, because this one was more of a chore to do than a fun activity.

Two things:

Your artwork is swell, and gets better with every page you draw for us. Liking the facial expressions and shading especially.

what bings you here? hmm. I thought something was missing...

And thanks, strangely enough; the less I care the better it looks. I don't know if I should be glad or sad.

Wow thanks! I've been drawing in my sketchbook almost exclusively for the last few weeks, so I wonder if all that practice is working.

Nice work there! To echo the others, you did do a good job with the facial expressions, which is always a difficult thing to get right (or so I've heard. I'm not much of an artist). Glad to see a new page for the comic, and a start into the adventure of Elly and Pete.

Actually, I like this. It's simple, but still sets a mood. Ellie looks a little troubled. Maybe she's going through a moment of introspection, or maybe her bullet wound is aching.

Some canons lend themselves to happy characters.  Others build on sad ones.  GSG is the latter, so this looks achingly beautiful.

A bit of musing to go with this wonderful picture:

"I feel blue now, but what for?
Is it that I am hurt inside?
Do I miss someone?
Could I need time alone?
Am I empty somewhere?

Could it be that I am hurt outside?
My bruises are black,
My blood runs red,
The day pours grey,
But my heart feels blue.

I can only look forward to the future,
Where the next day could be any color.
For as God has granted me my life,
I shall see a tomorrow, blue anew,
and to thus, I shall wait, until my time has come."
-Jim Eligino

I do think your work on this picture is wonderful, though. If anything, it's better than what I can create as art. Razz

Jimmy, you are a warrior poet! Thanks for writing that. believe it or not, this is the second time someone has written a poem about something I drew! It's a special feeling.

Alf; Thanks for the compliments! This is another case of 'the less I try the better it looks'. I wish college worked that way lol. I might do little quick portraits in this style for some other characters in the future. (not sad and depressing per se, but with a simple colour palette)

Ill keep you posted I guess.  Good
