On one hand it sounds like a great chance for Crystal to be around people, but she's got a part in something I'm planning with TSM.

Sorry PSVT, but I'll have to opt out.

PSVT: Kay is up for the hike. She suspects it isn't about sightseeing, but she knows her handler wants to know a little more about James.

MP5: Verotrois will be glad to help bring shower facilities and a civilized toilet to the camp.

Doc will likely circulate about the campsite, chatting with the stay-behinds. Tinking this is the likely night for the Ghost Story, if all participants will be ready in time. Realtime, I think the first post on that arc is still a ways off; there are adventures to be had this afternoon.

If you can, that would be awesome. The escapade should last for a little while anyway, so Crystal would have time.

I'm sure 'Amaterasu' and 'Chibiterasu' would appreciate that, and even that small gesture may pay dividends somewhere down the line.

All contributors be warned: Sometime during or after the trip to fetch the plastic barrels (about 1800 hours), the weather is going to turn. Expect rain, at least.

The campfire story may be postponed from second night to third, depending on developments.

CI - as per: http://gunslinger-girl.up-with.com/t3812p100-the-all-swa-teambuilding-camping-trip#121314

Rachel started out with 6 fish of her own, and another 6 from Alpha/Tea, making 12 fish heads and livers Tea can take to her new pets.

Still looking for some more people to join in on James's hike and scavenger hunt. Yes, I've changed things up somewhat to add in a game for the characters to play. More details on my previous post here in the link. If you're interested, just let me know.

Those already in so far:

CI: Tea
Vett: Edward and Rebecca
Thescarredman: Kristal
boomer_gonz: Crystal (possibly later on)

Jim, Jay and other are going out to get some plastic barrels they found, since that too is a march, maybe you to can get together. Just an idea.

And I'm waiting for the 2 reserved posts to be filled in.

Re: The All-SWA-Teambuilding-Camping-Trip...

Post by Thescarredman on Sun 26 Apr 2015 - 18:49

I'd like to put in a word about the growing trend toward 'reserving' slots in the thread to be filled later. I can see why someone would want to do it - like I said earlier in this thread, we don't all write at the same speed, or find story ideas in the same situations, so pacing is always a problem with a thread like this. And it's pretty discouraging to labor on a post only to find that someone has already posted something that forces you to rewrite or scrap your work.

That said, there are two problems with reserving a slot. Now the 'different speed' problem is working in reverse, slowing the posting rate as everyone else waits to see whether your post is going to force them to retract or retcon what they've already put down (for example, a thousand word post about struggling to keep one's tent from collapsing in a rainstorm, not knowing what sort of weather the chronologically-earlier-but-unposted contribution may describe, or a post putting a particular character in two places at once). Another hazard generated by such postings is that authors will stop trying to create interlinked posts, and the thread will fracture into several independent story lines, each with its own character subset.

Some 'team-building' exercise.

The final hazard is that the other writers may not know that you've filled your reserved slot and miss what you've written, since the 'thread follow' notification already went out when you reserved the slot and the system won't generate another when you fill in the blank.

I'm not saying not to reserve slots. I am saying that when you do, you have to be extra careful to communicate your intent to the other writers. Post some sort of synopsis of your intended post, either on the discussion thread or in the reserved space itself. And when you post, make an announcement here, with a link to the post, so that we can all enjoy it and build on it.

My two fratelli did bring food with them, the Rossi fratello with more normal canned food and the Bernard fratello with MREs. The Rossis are also partaking of Tea's generosity, and if there are fratelli who did not bring food they are willing to share. James is not so nice.

Pretty much this, though Florentino did forget to hand out the equipment list Razz . He and Odile have brought a lot of commercial freeze dried meals, which have the added bonus that they can be eaten out of the packet to minimise washing up. If people forgot, I quite like the idea of having to either fend for themselves of beg plead and borrow/barter... or make the half to full day hike back to the carpark by themselves if there is more back there.

On a different note, I've not had a chance to catch up yet but...

I'm going to back what TSM is saying here, for all the reasons mentioned and I think we'll put it in the "Standing Orders" that, if you are going to reserve a space, we want at least a note-form synopsis of what you intend to put there. Make sure to post in this thread once that slot has been filled as well so that people are notified.

I'd also note that it was originally noted that, if using someone else's character, to run by them what is happening/give them a heads up (or, ideally, you know, write it collaboratively), which might help alleviate any chances of putting people in two places at once.

Working on that. Is this what unemployment is supposed to be like? Because I've not been this flat out in months.

Does anybody on the 'barrel-picking' team have something they want to post while everyone is still at the meadow with the barrels? Cuz it looks like the weather is closing in fast; the team, I think, is going to get caught in it. Assuming that's so, I have a short one about the moment the clouds open up and start dumping. Anybody want to post something first?

Not Kay or Vee. Just Italian, German, French (not English, though their handler is American) and the private one they made up.

Barrel count:

2 - Jim
4 - Alpha
6 - Kay and Vee
7 - Charlie and Andy
7 - Jay and Allison (figures Allison would find a way to put hers on wheels)

26 all told. Finding uses for them all should be fun.

Monty can a bit but... yeah... she had better things to do with her time.  sweat

Florentino probably can a little as well but, like Michele, he's not part of that team.

Jim? Nah; he doesn't quite understand the language himself.

By the way, Jim could be going back for any remaining barrels, damning the weather, in his opinion.

Treat it like the second verse of a national anthem: everyone mumbles along to the tune, then sings really loudly for the bits that are the same as the first verse/that they can remember.

Alternately, when I was singing in chorale (a good, internationally respected one), the conductor's exact advice was "if you can't remember the words, sing 'John is a wanker' to the music".

Don't know if it's been discussed elsewhere before, but it occurs to me that, depending on how various tents/shelters fare and how much people/gear need to dry out as a result, post-storm may be a good opportunity for a hearty communal fire and story time?

Also, if you wish to know what I think of the latest post, this is what I think of it.
