Encouraged, actually... just make sure whoever's OCs you're interacting with is okay with how you're using them.

Never mind ending well, this isn't even starting tolerably.

I feel vaguely sorry for Odile because her Handler is clearly a self-centred arse, but... really?

(Side note: it's interesting to compare how Odile is showing up to how Raych would for the same trip, and what it says about their handlers, particularly given that they seem to be designed to press similar buttons for the reader - even if Odile is filtered through Monty's scorn).

We just started and me and Alf have structured to make sure that it is viable for people to join a bit late.

I'm still working on my entry post. Go ahead and join. Alf will add you to the participants here when he gets a chance.

No, anyone can join up until the thing finishes. That said: everyone is still in, or just leaving, the carpark right now... so were yours coming in the main group? Or will they be catching up later.

I presume you will be bringing Elly and Pete?

Oh, I can see all KINDS of ways a few folks from the SRT can add to the shenanigans here...

I was thinking possibly John, Fausto, Carlos and Massamiliano (aka Max), mostly because the guy who Max is based on has been giving me all KINDS of inspiration for lulz, and Carlos is due for a good kicking.

Would it be appropriate for the team to be on an "independent" excursion nearby, (possibly having been tipped off by Major Salas, and instructed to... educate the cyborgs on the importance of keeping track of their gear)?

I like the independent excursion idea but, from a "herding cats" perspective, I'd prefer to keep everyone in generally the same space if that's okay?

If it's related to your current post, I'd say throw it in the RP thread. If it's generally related but not necessarily in the same temporal space as where your characters are in the RP thread, I'd throw it here. If that makes sense.

Looks like we're off to a great start. I can see where the presence of Major Salles is going to be invaluable for controlling the pace and tone of the story. Great idea, Alf and Polos.

Now that the group is on the trail, I think we could use a little more description of the setting. The Major called it a 'goat track,' faint enough at times to possibly lose - not likely if the group is all traveling together, I think. But I have a few questions for our moderators.

Is it too narrow for two people to walk abreast? A long walk is a great opportunity for dialogue, but walking single file will limit interaction, and we'll need to pay attention to the order of march. I assume the trail is mostly hemmed in by trees.

Being observed and running into civilians seems to be a concern, but if the path is closed and solitary, that will only happen if the group meets someone coming the other way.Might other trails cross this one, or maybe it opens up periodically to afford a view?

Re: The All-SWA-Teambuilding-Camping-Trip...

Post by Alfisti on Sun 22 Mar 2015 - 8:01

In my head, to be honest, I was imagining a fairly standard National Park Trail or, at least, what I'm used to here, and sort of vaguely remember running into in Switzerland. That is to say it'll widen out in places to even get three of four easily abreast, then narrow down to damn-near illegibility in other places, particularly when things get steep or rocky, and you just have to keep walking and hope you find the thing again.

Following that same general imagining: It'll be wide and hemmed by trees for the first part, then climb above the treeline for a bit where it'll get narrower and harder going. Suffice to say it'll get worse as they get closer to the campsite and farther from the more regularly frequented bits of trail network (and finally off public trails all together). In a similar style, low down there are likely paths crossing, but again that would ease off as they get farther along.

That's the thinking at the moment at least.

As I'm doing prep-work for this, it's dawned on me that I've no real idea who my pair should/should not know. As Michelle and Kara usually end-up doing undercover-type jobs, I suspect they'd have probably crossed paths, but I've no idea about the rest of you - other than the vague 'I see them in the dining-room/range etc.'

I don't know much about batches and all that jazz, but Elly is a somewhat recent cyborg, being converted in either late 2011 or early 2012. Pete joined the agency at that time as well.

If we try to order the OCs by conversion date, I think we may run into a raft of problems: some of them probably come from slightly different realities. I imagine the compound is by turns nearly deserted or busy as a train station; it's feasible for any two cyborgs who haven't worked together not to know one another personally, but any cyborg who socializes, takes meals in the common dining hall, or uses the ranges is likely to know all the others by name at least. I'd say your characters should be able to know/not know anyone you like.

The handlers, however, I would assume all know one another.

I'm picturing it as not to dissimilar from a hike I did in the Pyrennees, lo these many moons ago... lots of open spaces on the side of hills, looking over valleys and hill towns (which are REALLY cool to look at), interspersed with occasional swathes of tree cover, not too thick.

I don't BELIEVE we crossed any streams, but there were occasionally some nearby... yeah! Because I remember using iodine tablets...

Hopefully the thing will get enough momentum to mostly guide itself and, to be honest, there shouldn't be a whole lot of plot to contend with, bar the inter-personal ones people generate between themselves. However, if the thing appears to be flagging or straying too far off course, then yes, that's what the Major is there for: to guide it along. He will, however, per the opening post, be basically invisible unless required.

I don't BELIEVE we crossed any streams, but there were occasionally some nearby... yeah! Because I remember using iodine tablets...

In the chat I described the campsite as "pretty idyllic" however, since no-one on the hike actually knows what they're in for, I think it only fair no-one actually finds out until they get there. Last month, National Geographic magazine had a spread on Gran Paradiso National Park so I'm kind of drawing from it for general descriptions of the climb.

Hopefully, maybe, I'll have part 2 of James and Rachelle later tomorrow evening. Maybe... sweat

Gran Paradiso National Park is pretty much the location I imagined things would be taking place as well.

Guys, doing a doodle per post might not be doable for the next couple posts. This camping trip just happened to land on a week where I'm overloaded with school work.

I've already pushed aside studying to draw the most recent doodle, and I don't wanna fail courses because of camping Razz

I'll post a short text post for whenever I'm short on time.

Mate, study first. At the end of the day, real life trumps interbotz. Frankly, even without having to balance the study load I think you would have been doing well to keep up one sketch per post... no matter how enjoyable they are to look at. Very Happy

Thanks bud, solid advice. If I had it my way, I'd be drawing 24/7 for this camping trip. Can't wait till we set up tents, that should be an interesting post!

I have a question about how some of us are approaching the hike portion of the camping get away.  My question is this, the girls are combat cyborgs, several times stronger than a regular person with armored skin, so why would they have so much trouble with a simple hike.  There enhanced abilities should have made this a breeze.  I guess its the way I see their abilities, but I was just curious.

I'm sure their strength is factored into how heavily their backpacks are packed. They probably have to carry all the heavy stuff. Just my assumption.

I know in the case of Florentino and Odile, while Florentino has the water can (because they're still in the public eye and so have to keep up appearances), his cyborg has everything heavy... canned food, tents, cooking gear, etc. Florentino probably has, like... pillows.

Remember the majority of the cyborgs in question are Type 2 and also regarding the difference between Type 1 & 2 cyborgs.

Type 1 cyborgs; while not as fast as the Type 2's are in fact wholesale built for strength and endurance and specialization added in at the discretion of the Agency and handler in question. With this I see Tea shouldering a huge backpack and outright sacheting with two full jerry cans while humming a tune.

Type 2 Cyborgs however were built more for speed and espionage making quick work of most assignments and better blending into the background afterward. So unless they've been purpose trained for such excursions (which most of them haven't, not to mention their handlers) to say that they are out of their element would be doing their situation a disservice.
