I certainly wish that it was. Smile As they said, it is from an erotic doujinshi. I found it online and felt that both the image and feel of the picture was innocently warming.

You seem a little offended. I can certainly remove it if you feel that it may insult someone. Crossing a line was not my intention at all. I apologize.

I think sometimes comics need some fanservice to keep readers and survive in the commercial world. But Yu Aida make it too obvious. I really feel that I have been forced into her adoration. That make me sick.

I really like Petra, but I don't like the idea of just continuing to introduce new characters at the expense of reduced exploration of the original cast. Maybe throw her in a spinoff or something... Gunslinger Girl: The H Generation?

That' something I wont buy. A lot of GSG fans would feel that way. Most of us would throw Petrushka off a cliff if we could. (Me included)

I dont know if it was in this thread or not, but I once made the suggestion that the gen2s have there own separate manga series (the gen2s would be move way from Rome to another city). That way, everyones happy.

I agree, Petra should probably have been a spin-off. Like "SWA Dorm Confessions" or something...

I don't hate Petra, but I think it was a bad part on Yu Aida to dedicate the entire Volume 8 to her and Sandro. I actually liked Volume 7 because they combined the first generation girls (Claes and Triela) with her on missions. I also think it was bad timing that right after Angelica dies we see new faces of the 2nd generation. Maybe if they slowly brought the 2nd generation girls in while working with the 1st generation it would have been duable.

I wonder if there has been any new information on the OVAs yet. October feels so far away...

Well, big Al is scared of losing her, and he's trying to rationalize her limited life span as 'still plenty of time', but ultimately, he knows she's doomed, and doesn't want to be alone again. So he macks on her.

I agree that the introduction of the 2nd generation girls had very bad timing. Just listening to their conversation after Ange died made me hate them. I already disliked Petruska and Sandro, as they seemed to be taking over the manga and behaved like rabbits (at least Sandro does)... also bad timing. They also seemed to change the theme of adolescent children carrying big guns, as Petruska is basically a teen.

The idea of generation two girls is not bad; however, Yu Aida's execution of the idea has left a bitter taste (and not in a good way). I feel that he should have remained focused on the first generation girls and their handlers, as they find themselves being replaced by a newer generation (and for the girls, facing their fast approaching deaths), which continues the theme that the world has forsaken them, now including the agency. Have the 2nd gen girls be slowly brought in and work with the first generation girls, and then give them a spin-off series. Right now, they (mostly Petruska) are being force-fed down the reader's throat. Here's hoping the OVA's have nothing to do with the second generation... but my gut says Petruska........ Yuck!

well here's what can happen
we get the 1st 2 chaps of vol 6 and see not Petra, but then we'll have to face a 100% petra season 3 Yuck!

or we can have the intro to Petra now and see some Etta and Rico on the next season before being chocked with more Petra

As Ive said before, there are still several First Generation girls who have not even been introduced yet. If Yu felt he needed to add more characters, why not them. Hell, what about Beatrice!

I say, take all of those snot-nosed, bitchy teenagers and send them to the branch office in Milan

and good riddance!

Wise decision Nacht my friend, wise decision. Laughing

BTW, Im still broken up about the fact that your OC didn't make the jump to the small screen. What a shame, washed up at such a young age. Probably wont be long before shes holding up liquor stores.

I'm so happy about it too! Personally I can't wait to see Jean crack. It's one of my favorite parts ever! Idk why... :huray:

Re: Gunslinger Girl OVAs

I've seen it mentioned on the website Jabootu Reviews, as well as Wiki Trope, that movie series tend to go like this:

First one: Mindblowingly phenomenal.

Second one: Great, but not as awsome as the first. Some people might enjoy the second one better (or that could be possible misremembering on my part?)

Third one: Campy and childish, a distinct let-down from the first two.

Fourth one: Complete and utter crap.

Fifth one: A reboot that pretends the last two movies never existed.

I bring this up because we've already had a revolutionary season one and a wonderful season two. I would hope that we don't find ourselves discussing seasons three and four because we want to talk about what we hate.

Hopefully Gunslinger Girl won't follow this pattern and will either diverge significantly from the manga (and still be good) or it will change enough that Petra isn't annoying. And if season four did focus on Triela it would certainly have some good stuff to work with.

This trope seems to be using the Batman franchise as a generalization.

Wait, what? A sixteen year old girl who has boobs is fanservice? For a manga that's targeted to lolicons? I mean, come on -- young girls who are programmed to devote their lives to older men. If anything, I'd say Triela's shower scene is perhaps the only true fanservice in the entire manga.

As for being forced on the story -- to be quite honest, I was getting bored of the same old song and dance with the rest of the girls (i'm in love with jean/i don't know how i feel about hirscher/i don't respond like a normal human to anything except jean), and it was nice to have a break from that. And she was a background character before she took the main stage, anyway.

I don't feel that the author was trying to "make" you like her. When authors do that, they make it pretty obvious, and most usually have people repeating that the character is strong, or have everyone take a shine to them immediately. Petra, however, was shown as a person with faults who acted like a normal teenager, not some beacon of light who inspired all. That is, pretty much like the rest of the girls. I enjoy her story and her character and the way she interacted and reacted with situations. It's just another take on cyborg/human relations, like the rest of the manga. But this time, it's someone slightly older. Oh, no.

I'm also not sure where people are getting the idea that they're behaving like rabbits. Petra gradually fell in love with Sandro, and now they're trying to make the most of the time they have left, just as the rest of the handlers are trying to do (or, at least, prolong their deaths). Woo! How raunchy and shallow. She is only here for fanservice, clearly.

Would people not have a problem with her if she was just another loli with a creepy relationship with her handler? (Not that all the girls do, I just notice that Triela and Henrietta seem to have the most fans, whereas Angelica and Claes -- not so much. Of course, this may also have to do with the fact that their handlers aren't particularly handsome.)

The first-gens are hardly 'lolis'. None of them are what you could call sexually precocious or attractive.

I'll leave the rest of the rebuttals to the others, now.

...and here I thought it was a manga targeted at fans of tragic action/dramas with a side of political history. I guess it sorta depends on your outlook on life.
Bringing in a girl with nice tits and ass and then displaying them wantonly every few pages... yes, that's fanservice.
Solar wrote:I mean, come on -- young girls who are programmed to devote their lives to older men. If anything, I'd say Triela's shower scene is perhaps the only true fanservice in the entire manga.
a truly shallow and disgusting way to look at it.
No matter where its roots lie, this story evolved into something better than fap-fodder for a bunch of fucking pedophiles. Looking at the core of the story, these child assassins aren't "programmed to devote their lives to their handler". They're brainwashed into being receptive to combat training and conditioned to feel no remorse. If you want an example of that principle:

Solar wrote:I don't feel that the author was trying to "make" you like her. When authors do that, they make it pretty obvious
only with unskilled authors. Most of the rest of us probably avoid shit written by people like that. I know I do.
Solar wrote:Petra, however, was shown as a person with faults who acted like a normal teenager, not some beacon of light who inspired all.
just like all of Aida's characters. She's shallower than most of 'em, but deeper than characters from most other manga.
Solar wrote:I'm also not sure where people are getting the idea that they're behaving like rabbits.
try lurking around a bit more, I've explained it many times.
Solar wrote:Petra gradually fell in love with Sandro
that'd be the forced part of the story. She no more 'fell in love' with him than any teenager who gets into an early and short marriage. She developed puppy love on top of conditioning, and he didn't have the self-fucking-control to say no to his drugged-up teenaged student.
Solar wrote:Would people not have a problem with her if she was just another loli with a creepy relationship with her handler? (Not that all the girls do, I just notice that Triela and Henrietta seem to have the most fans, whereas Angelica and Claes -- not so much.
As far as I'm concerned, 'Sandro is the one with the 'creepy' problem in that relationship. He's a sexual predator, and a manipulative bastard.
For 'Etta and Triela, though... I don't envy Hillshire or Giuseppe.
One's just trying to do the right thing and essentially raise an adoptive daughter... who develops a confused (hopefully only familial) sort of love for him while he trains her to kill people...
...The other's trying to cope with the loss of both parents and a sister... then he winds up teaching a superhuman little girl who has a crush on him to kill people.
Poor bastards, their chances with real women just got crushed like a perp's head in a cybernetic hand...

Solar wrote:Of course, this may also have to do with the fact that their handlers aren't particularly handsome.)
Not all manga is about 'pairings'. If that's all you want from 'em, go back and read some shoujo crap.

Conversely, they're not all about dominating people in combat... if that's all you want, go read some shonen crap.

I'll stick with my sci-fi, geopolitical conspiracy - human tragedies (like GSG, or a Robert Ludlum novel), thanks.

@Solar - I agree with what you're saying about Petra. Sorry so many of our members don't.

@LoC - I disagree with what you're saying about Petra being a shallow character and only in love with Sandro 'cause she's programmed to be. But I would rather have us all drop the issue and change the subject.

I only hope you don't feel the first five volumes of the manga is mere fap-fodder for lolicons the way someone seems to, Ryuu.

I know I'm not gonna convince anyone who hasn't seen the shit I have, so consider the Petra thing dropped.

Of course not. I don't necessarily prefer Petra over the other girls - I just don't think she's as bad as y'all make her out to be sometimes. But like you said - subject dropped.

Logic would dictate that he's part of his assumed target demographic for the manga. But honestly, what does logic have to do with anything?
