Would you prefer...

Post by Guest on Thu 17 Apr 2008 - 7:45

a) P-90 x MP5
b) MG03 x SAW 25
c) M70 x Springfield M1903A1
d) SVD x M70

I'm just wondering. Which weapon would you pick in terms of combat capability and reliability in certain types of situation?

I'm no gunexpert, but based on what I know so far...

(a) P-90. Bigger magazine (50-30), supposedly more powerful round (5.7-9mm), accurate out to longer ranges (150m-100m) and it looks cool.

(b) No idea how to compare these two.

(c) Isn't the M1903A1 from WW-1? I presume you're comparing it against the M40 (couln't find an M70), which will definatly be my pick as a superior weapon.

(d) I'd go with the SVD, THE sniper rifle.

I don't know a thing about reliability though, and as you can see my weapon of choice is the Durian Cannon, meaning I've never touched a gun (will be doing that in one years time).

This spiky horror.

I dropped one on my foot as a kid. Not a very pleaseant experience, let me tell you. My family all like eating them though, heavens knows why.

If the 'M70' is a Marine Corps sniper rifle, Panzer, I reckon you're actually talking about the Remington M40, as Sasahara pointed out.

But anyway...

a) FN P-90 over HK MP5. Bigger ammo capacity, powerful slugs, better range.

b) FN SAW over Rheinmetall MG3. Immense firepower for its easily handled size. Reliable, too, with a more controllable rate of fire.

c) Remington M40 over Springfield M1903. Harder-hitting and more rugged.

d) Dragunov SVD over Remington M40. Simply 'cause it fires faster.

I think I'll take some alternates...

a) for an SMG... gimme somethin' in .45ACP. Loaded with hollow points. Like maybe a UMP45 or Kriss Super V.
but, yeah... P90 over MP5.

b) so, by SAW 25 you mean an M249/FN Minimi? ...well, I'll take an M240B over both for squad ops, but I'll take the MG3 for a mounted weapon. Actually, gimme a Browning M2.
So... yeah, SAW for mobility, MG3 if I've got a solid position, weapon mount and weapon crew.

c&d) the SVD is a semi-auto, not really the same class as the 1903 or M40... I'd take the Dragunov for heavier combat, but the M40 if I have time on my side.

Funny, since it's actually not a sniper rifle at all, but one of the world's first DMR's.

yeah... it's a Designated Marksman's Weapon, but all the manuals I've found for mine (I know, I know... it's a PSL, not a real SVD. Close enough) call it a sniper rifle. Pointing out the difference could be considered splitting hairs, especially to anyone who has never tried any long-distance shooting.

Yeah, on the battlefield, where there's a higher probability of multiple enemies and a need for more flexibility, I'd probably go with a semi-auto DMR/Sniper Rifle.

If I was on some sort of police sniper team, dealing with lower numbers, then I might go bolt action instead.

and I just learnt the hard way even match-grade sniper rifle can be less accurate @ less than 700 yards due to operator error induced by high stress environment (wet, all kinds of cuts from thick vegetation, and panting after 100 yds dash, then engaging sub-MOA targets at 400-500 yds)

You're right, Loc. Splitting hair indeed, since by strict, literal definition, even an AK47 can be a sniper weapon

A) I rather have... the FN P-90 because of the armor piercing capability, the capacity, and the compact design. The H&K MP5 is nice but the 9mm doesn't do shitake against body armor.
FN P-90 > H&K MP5

B) I rather have... A SAW, preferably the M240G since it's a bit lighter than it's German counter part, oh and it's made in the USA.
M240G > MG03

C) I rather have... The Springfield since it has a bigger caliber than the 7.62 NATO round. Also, it's been battle tested through out WWII.
M1903 Springfield > M40

D) I rather have... The Springfield since it's made in the USA. Oh the .30-06 is hella bigger than that Russian 7.62mm. Very Happy

My own preference: I honestly rather have the H&K X-M8 and the Mk23SD. I chose the X-M8 because it is a modular weapon, and it is chambered for the 5.56mm NATO Ball round. The X-M8 can be fitted with different parts (I.E the barrel, hand guard, stock, and mag) to suit the mission. It has the Basic Rifleman's mod, SDM (Squad Designated Marksman) mod, support mod, and CQ (Close Quarters) Compact mod. The Mk23SD is a .45ACP round which means it packs a punch, but it also comes with the capability to add a suppressor. This makes my missions flexible for sensitive missions. ^^

I wouldn't really compare the MG3 to the SAW. One is a crew served GPMG while the other is, well, a SAW. Like the two other posters said, MG3 should be compared with the M240, or the SAW compared with a MG4.

The same goes for the MP5 and the P90, one is a SMG while the other is a PDW.
