On the other hand it could be progress on the Agency's part. Pre-program the entire Basic Training phase straight into them and you can avoid massive hilarity and internet memes (IMO Henrietta staring down the barrel of her Sig is hilarity). The downside is that all the 2G girls are so similar that they might as well have popped off an assembly line (which they did)

You would think that with all of the Agencies technology they could have at least programmed the bitchiness out of them.

I'm not sure it is "training" as much as it is "practice" since they're always at the range. Claes' mission in the subway might very well have just been a test of her conditioning to make sure she'd kill a stranger when ordered to do so.

Unfortunately, they can not program (at least with the type 2s, as stated with Petra's examination) the personalities out of them.
Then again, once a bitch, always a bitch.

Claes' subway thingus, in my opinion, was a form of training far more worthwhile than any time at the rifle range. Nothing beats 'on-the-job' training where actual human beings are your targets.

The ADV translation has Raballo specifically stating it's "field practice" and the objective was to get past the punks "quietly and with restraint".

That being said, he was upset she waited to shoot until after she'd been stabbed so it's possible he knew the punks would try and attack her and that she would respond with deadly force as she was conditioned to do. He did have Alfonso ready to remove any bodies.

Along those lines, I thought he told Claes that with "If you cant handle a couple of punks, then you would be able to deal with a real job (mission)."

I'm not certain that the gen 2's are trained from the get-go. While they can have knowledge imparted to them in the life-skills and brainwashing parts of their training, Petra specifically asks Sandro "shouldn't we be working on weapons training or something?" Indicating that she might not be familiar with shooting at all. Add to this the physical aspect, Sandro's observations that she seems to be getting used to her body, and it leaves you wondering just how much or little "experience" they can program in before they wake up.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

I'm assuming that they input some stuff pertaining to what the handler wants. Weapon specifications and basic stuff like table manners should be there so that the handler doesn't need to go through the hassle of teaching Henrietta not to stab waiters.

Petra knows the full specifications of her weapon when she wakes up, so her comment that "shouldn't we be in training" might be something she was programmed to expect to do, but Sandro isn't doing it.

In "Kara 2.0", as soon as Kara wakes up, Michele takes her to Paris. So that evening as she's sitting on the terrace sipping wine looking out over the City of Lights, she notes to herself that the day turned out very different than she had expected because she'd been told her first weeks would be weapons training and familiarization - not a vacation.

Actually, they make a cameo since they're in Paris filming as part of their Supercar Road Trip to the Millau Viaduct and the police think the Murciélago Kara is driving is part of the shoot so they direct her to park behind James' 430 Spyder.

It was pure dumb luck - right place at the right time.

Though they did get to attend the studio taping later that month (she's in the long tan coat next to the F430 Spyder behind the tall guy with grey hair):

@Professor Voodoo wrote:Has anyone ever found any clues as to the etymology of Triela's name?

It appears to be a very rare name. If you type it into Google as a given name, it only returns Gunslinger Girl hits for the first few pages. The first non-GSG hit is an African American model named Triela Edwards. There is also a Sgt. stationed in Killeen, TX with the same name. But that's like it. It also appears to be a family name, but again, it's very rare. US Census Data for 1920 showed only two families with that last name in the US (one in MO and one in NY).

So I'm inclined to think it's a name Yu made up. I imagine it was given to her by Hilshire as it certainly does not sound Arabic so I cannot believe it was her given name from Tunisia. Within the story, I imagine Hilshire probably just chose it at random because it sounded Germanic and Italian. If I ever had to refer to it within my OC fiction, that is the path I would take.

The creator might've chosen it because the name was rare, like Kiskaloo said. It's better giving characters names that are unique, because once you hear or see it, you know exactly who it is.

Okay, while reading about something completely different, a theory about Triela's name developed:

Hillshire's German home only appears in only 2 frames...at the beginning of ch 19 (the Mimi Machiavelli chapter). The outdoor frame shows grapes being gathered, with a river in the background.

A main wine making region of Germany is the Mosel valley...

Not Trier...Bernkastel-Kues

...and Trier is the oldest city along the German portion of the river. I believe it's reasonable to suspect that Victor Hartman comes from Trier or close to it, and that Triela is a permutation of his home town's name.

Ye-ouch! Next time you travel to Germany, Robert, I suggest you don't try to pick up any Mosel valley girls using that line!

Agreed, Blue Nun is export swill, but there are much better wines to be found in Deutschland. Mosel's are mostly white semi-sweet table wines, but I did see at least one red (the German version of a Pinot Noir) from the area.

Alpha: I always wondered when I would get a chance to open this bottle of '97 Screaming Eagle. How do you say?

Altheus(pulls out three wine glasses): Of course.

Liesel: Wait a moment while I go to my apartment for some brie and water crackers.

(Liesel's apartment is on the same building as Altheus' and close by at the end of the hallway)

And Fernando would drink it...

But he prefers something older and more sophisticated... Aged drinks (rums, whiskeys, bourbons, scotches, cognac, etc)- 15yo+ (JWB is 20-25), with 100yo stuff being the best he can get. And yes, these can also run a piston or strip varnish off a table, but it would be a damn shame to use it that way...

Use this to run your car engine, or strip varnish, there will be grown men crying afterwards.

I mean, Triela is blonde, she has a semi-sweet personality and she's probably the most normal of the girls.

At first I witnessed gunslinger girl for the first time on on-demand, I am guilty of watching it at first because of the stark contrast of little girls trained to be stone-cold assassins(theoretically) the more I watched it, the more I started falling in love with the show.

The story is astounding, "broken" girls with tragic, misfortunate, and unwarranted pasts given a second chance at life but bound to the Agency trained to be counter-terrorists with unwavering loyalty and devotion to their handlers, (either due to conditioning, their own true feelings, or both) this unrequited love as in the case for Henrietta and Triela (but in Triela's case depends on who you talk to) and my interest certainly peaked with Elsa knowing that she will not be loved by her handler and the very person who kept her going gone, she had no will to live anymore.

At first my favorite was Henrietta but after reading the manga, Triela is now my favorite especially with the backstory she has with Hilshire, Rachelle, and Mario Bossi.

Ya I got a bit sidetracked from the topic at hand but just like Hilshire I wonder how all the first Gen girls would have been if it wasn't for the events that caused them to be picked up by SWA in the first place.

Yes I'm also guilty of thinking that Triela and Hilshire had carnal relations and Henrietta having the most sensual thoughts her young adolescent mind that she can think of but as to it turning me on?

Not even, I read one of the doujin, the Melancholy of Claes and was not aroused one bit, I read it for the story, I'm actually interested more of how Triela's baby would look like and if the baby would already have the conditioning and cybernetic implants already built in or not xP

I'm more into young adult women with Valkyriesque bodies i.e. thick and full-bodied in all the right places.Also chicks who are cute and just have the right amount of chubby on their bodies.

Also I have a propensity for the dark-skinned girls with blond hair in Animes just because of the combination but Triela pleasantly surprised me that she was not like Mihoshi from Tenchi Muyo

It would be nice, but by the same token I think Yu's leaving that as a grey area on purpose, at least for now. That slight air of mystery is one of the things that sets that particular fratello apart from the others. To my mind at least, Triela's character is mostly defined by her time with Hilshire, rather than her life before that...

It would also be nice if Yu would make like a parallel universe where the SWA doesn't exist and the girls grew up normally relative to how their lives are/were in the GSG universe. Hilshire would sometimes think about how Triela could have been an excellent doctor or a renowned scholar and the way Yu words it, he sounds more like a dad than anything else.

Now that's something of an idea... in this alternate world, these girls never suffered the injuries and tribulations that brought them to the SWA.

Of course for some, like Rico, this would not necessarily be a good thing...

Ehh... point... what's good for the goose is good for the gander, after all.

A good bit of this would require speculation as to the nature of their personalities without the conditioning, though... or in this AR are we assuming their personalities to be in-line with their canon personalities?

... Or am I investing too much thought into a whim?

Hmm yep and then the story would be too drab and trite....I'm guessing it would be safe to presume that we as in everybody in this forum all are attracted to melancholy and bittersweet endings like the guy saves the girl but in the process he dies or when ghosts get to finally rest in peace like that one episode in johnny quest the ghosts take over johnny and that red-head and they finally make amends and the island disappears now that they can rest in peace, the new(est) ones that were shown on cartoon network in the late 90's-early 2000's. You know what I'm talking about though right?( in regards to the point I'm trying to make.)

Claes = 158 cm (5'2")
Petrushka = 160 cm (5’3”)
Triela = 164 cm (5'4")

Hilshire = 178 cm (5'9")
Jose = 180 cm (5'10")
Jean = 184 cm (6'0”)
Marco = 186 cm (6'1")

Pinocchio = 172 cm ('5'7")
Franca = 180 cm (5'10")
Franco = 193 cm (6'4")
