That's actually a grenade launcher. An HK69, I think.

right on the money. that's an HK69.
and yeah... the design is a little old, having been created in the 60s. But a 40mm grenade launcher is still a 40mm grenade launcher. It'll fuck some shit up if the guy holding it knows how to lob 'em in.

Given that the launcher in question is in police use, I'd imagine it would tend to be used more for things like baton rounds and tear gas then HE rounds. Also, I think this might be the MZP-1, a version specifically for police use, although it seems like about the only difference between and MZP-1 and an HK69A1 is the sights.

Also, the HK69 may have come out in 1979 (according to wikipedia) but it's not like the basics of a 40mm grenade launcher have changed all that much. As LOC noted, it's still a useful weapon.

That being said, there have been some advances in terms of sighting systems and ammunition, such as the 40mm HELLHOUND round.

A grenade launcher indeed! The HK69.

It was commonly use as an anti-riot weapon, right?

I still think conventional arms is enough to clear riots though. Preferably, a .50 Cal MG mounted on a truck. Scare them away for good! Any one know where in the world where riots seems to be the worst?

do they make 40mm grenade beanbag (baton) rounds? I've only heard of the 12-gauge ones...

Yeah, but a mounted Browning M2 kills people en masse. An HK69 loaded with tear gas generally doesn't. Police are supposed to try not to kill people if it can be avoided.

40mm grenade beanbag (baton)

yep. they sure do. its just a large slug, larger then the beanbag ammo a shot gun can use. again the name says it, Beanbag its a small sack of pellets.
the 40mm baton is a solid slug, handy if you'd have to punch through a window or wall first.

plus the 40mm can be bounced off walls to shoot someone standing near a corner.

the only thing that such's is the single round only aspect of it.
Though the HK69 does reminds me of a modernized M-79 (AKA: 'Thumper' or 'Blooper') from the vietnam wars.

I just recently search google about 'world's worst riots', and I find a clip about Indonesia's 98 riot. Anyone got a hint or a clue how bad it is? I read that many left the country for the reason. The authorities didn't do a thing, so it says. I think that time the .50 cal would be very useful...

Wrong!

H&K MP5, H&K 69, single shot taiser gun, and a pistol... I think Glock... not sure though... could be Walther P99.

Guys, I think you keep missing the point -awinnel isn't denying the heavy weaponry that's present in this picture. He's simply saying that it's very rare to see British Police with this sort of gear, and that they generally don't carry heavy weapons. (And from the sounds of what he's saying, it's still true that British policemen generally don't carry guns at all -I'd heard that, but I wasn't sure if it had changed recently.)

yeah thats right no guns for most of the UK's police, they have armed response patrol cars if they need armed help quickly with larger more heavily armed tactical teams for more serious threats the average bobby is only armed with a can of pepper spray and truncheon, though i understand that tasers are also being issued in small numbers in certain areas

Really? I just learned something new!

...Wait, they're U.K? I thought they're American being so tall and all...

I thought British police have this weird hat/helmet on their head? Not the Royal Guards, but the regulars...I thought they have this cone-shaped hats or helmets?

*Chuckles* they are britishm, yes. the checkered line coing across the cap in white is the dead give away.

From the looks of it... it seems like a Swat fashioned Team with minimal gear/striking a semi Pose. I think this item was related to the increase in airport security because of the terrorist bombings and what not.

in the back ground though, one does wair a helmet.

*EDIT*

the checkered line on the cap is a dead give away because I know the british are the only ones who use that. at least to my knowledge.

In my eye, so does every country out there.
for instance, in Germany a man pushing a cart is legally considered a vehicle, while a man pulling a cart is a pedestrian.
Weirdest licensing test I've ever taken...

There are a shitload of 'em in America as well, but they're mostly state or city laws. (for example: in St. Louis, Missouri it is illegal to sit on the curb of any city street and drink beer from a bucket)
The big federal one, though... it's perfectly legal to drink until you die of alcohol poisioning in the privacy of your own home... but it's illegal to smoke marijuana AT ALL (here's a good one: State medical marijuana laws don't apply on a federal level. Someone with a state permit to grow and smoke the stuff can still be arrested by the feds). Also, it's illegal to not wear a seatbelt while driving... but only if your car was manufactured with seatbelts in it. Is it me, or do we have a few extra standards floating around here?

LOC -the seatbelt one actually makes sense to me. But yeah, some of the local laws in the US are pretty weird. Relics of times gone by, in a lot of cases.

Canada probably has some as well, but I'm having trouble thinking of many off the top of my head.

Although I should note that when a Canadian refers to 'tabling' a resolution in politics, it basically means the opposite of what it does in the US. You guys use that term to refer to shelving a proposal, right? We use it to refer to putting it forward (same way the Brits do, I think).

the thing about the seatbelt law is... what's the law (in general) there to protect you from? Just other people, or additionally from yourself? if it's there to protect you from yourself, why are we allowed to drive old cars that weren't made to have seatbelts, drink ourselves to death, perform stunts on motorcycles, ride skateboards, et cetera?
You see the double standard there? If you think about it, seatbelts should only be required for people not deemed old enough to make decisions for themselves, same as helmet laws (unless you want to admit that the laws are only there to generate revenue for the state and/or city Wink ).

Well, maybe it's because I live in a 'socialist nanny state' like Canada, but I think it's actually a good idea. It can save the government some medical bills when people get into a crash. And yet on the other hand, people like Classic Cars too. So I guess it makes sense to me.

Edit: Just to clarify, I would tend to say that in general I'm in favour of the government staying out of people's personal lives. But I guess I don't see seatbelt laws as a real violation of my rights...

Yeah, it's not really a violation of anyone's rights... just a minor inconsistancy in lawmaking that I see repeated everywhere. I guess I just have a tendancy to rant on, being an advocate of simplified government and consistant standards.

Back in Cambridge we where all under the impression that it was illegal to cross Cambridge Commons, a small grassy field right next to harvard yard, without a loaded shot gun. You know in case of bear attack...

I can see exactly why the seat belt law would upset LoC. Personally I don't mind the seat belt law. I agree we could go to far with it. Seat belts, and Helmets are the kind of thing you aught to use. Salt is what every you get when you pour an acid, and a base together. Table salt mostly Sodium Chloride, with few other chloride salts here, and there. From my understanding our bodies are really just looking for the Sodium. Sodium Ions by their very natures are difficult to qualify as artifical. So the same would go for any table salt replacement, in my opinion. It's not cooking, it's chemistry!

There are couple ways of handling how to make salt illegal. You only need about 4 grams of sodium a day. So you could probably just eat a large quantity of other food to get your sodium. However I imagine you would have to eat a lot to do that, and risk obesity as a result. Thus countering any positive health effects of such a law. Another option is to treat table salt as a strictly controlled substance. Anyone caught consume above their alloted dosage, or preparing food to high in salt would be punished. Another very similar option is to offer strictly controlled vietnams pills containing a lot of sodium.

Then again it might have just be a silly action movie where no one actually thought through the implications of ban table salt. **Edit** Or maybe they did, and it is in fact a really sophisticated joke.
