Advance Wars, GSG style

Advance Wars, GSG Style

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gadget_Trial

Idea ‘adapted’ from the game ‘Gadget Trial’ by KOGADO Studio. Rejoice, an ‘Advance Wars’
Clone! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_Wars)

In the near future, a revolutionary new form of unmanned
weapon is developed by the European Union; the multipurpose autonomous nanotech
robot army; the Gunslinger Girl. Using state of the art nanotechnology and
armored parts, one cyborg can suddenly become a fighting force.

Each unit is an army in itself, capable of ‘cloning’ itself
through cellular division and regeneration, an entire army of these units,
equipment included, can be created within a span of days. Controlled from a
single commander unit, these autonomous robots function like a hive entity,
moving though the battlefield with unparalleled coordination. On top of that,
each unit is capable of doing things a regular human being would be unable to
(this is an android army after all).

This army can out produce, out maneuver and outfight the
enemy. A perfect weapon. Sounds almost too good to be true.

Five prototype androids are created. All is expected to go well when an unexpected
snag comes along. The weapons of mass destruction have adopted the
personalities of young adolescent girls. Five ADOLECENT girls. Considering how
much money Secretary of Defense Lorenzo sunk into this project, Somebody is
going to get shot for this little oversight.

Despite this… rather considerable setback… Major General Jean Croche decides to press on
with the project and assigns his best military commanders to tutor the girls in
the fine art of waging war in a series of trials against each other and the
conventional military.

Game Notes;

All armies have the following units

Land - ‘Mobile Infantry’,
‘Recon Vehicle, ‘Main Battle Tank’, ‘Armored Personnel Carrier’, ‘Artillery’, ‘Anti Air Battery’

Sea - ‘Naval Battleship’, ‘Aircraft Carrier’, ‘Submarine’, ‘Landing Craft’

Air – ‘Air Superiority Fighter’, ‘Bomber’, ‘VTOL Gunship’, ‘Transport Helicopter’

However performance of these units vary greatly from army to
army, as shown by the characteristics of each GSG. Example, Henrietta’s
Infantry squads carry more supplies and ammunition than Triela’s Infantry, but
do less overall damage in a direct firefight. Also, each GSG has one special ‘unique’
unit that only they have the ability to field.

Prototype Army;

General Jose Croche/GSX -5 Henrietta
Pros – Henrietta’s troops use less supplies and ammunition in the field
Cons – Firepower and durability of her troops are inferior
Unique Unit – ‘Berserkers’, more or less an infantry unit that functions like a cheap tank, but dies easily
CO-Power - 'Out of Control', all units have greatly increased firepower, but take increased couterattack damage

General Jean Croche/GSX-2 Rico
Pros – All of Rico’s units have higher movement range and shooting ranges
Cons – Rico’s naval units are close to useless
Unique Unit – ‘Sniper’, specialized infantry armed with
Guass Rifles, capable of killing armor with a single shot from a ridiculous distance away
CO-Power - 'Here comes Rico', Rico's units can move and fire twice in a turn

General Victor Hartmann/GSX-3 Triela
Pros – Triela’s direct combat units all do more damage, and her Armor can take ridiculous amounts of punishment
Cons – All her long range units suffer reduced range and damage; she’s too stubborn to sit them with anything other than 'shotgun type things'.
Unique Unit – ‘Bear Brigade Tank’, heavy battle tank that is exterely well armored and powerful
CO-Power - 'Bear Brigade, Advance!', repairs and refuels all units to full strength

Admiral Raballo/GSX-4 Claes
Pros – Claes fields incredibly powerful Naval units and use less fuel and supplies out at sea
Cons – Claes habitually fails at killing things, leaving enemies at 1HP when they should be dead
Unique Unit – ‘Fishing Boat Class’, a stealth battleship that doubles as a carrier and can produce gunships
CO-Power - 'Going Fishing', repairs and refuels all naval units to full strength, all enemy units suffer 2 HP of damage from smell of fish

General Marco Toni/ GSX-1 Angelica
Pros – Every single one of Angelica’s units have drastically increased firepower
Cons – Units burn fuel and supplies very quickly
Unique Unit – ‘White Dog Tank', really nasty tank that doubles as long range Artillery, but about as fast as fast as a snail
CO-Power - 'Pasta Blaster', Angie's units firepower triples

First Gen

Colonel Lauro de Sica/GSG-101 Elsa
Pros – All Elsa’s units can be transformed into deadly suicide bombers at a cost
Cons – Elsa’s units suffer from reduced firepower
Unique Unit – None, her regular units are powerful enough with their little ‘explosive add-ons’
CO-Unit - 'For The Glory of Lauro-Sama!', All Elsa's units implode, completely wiping the battlefied of everything. She's more or less lost, but what a sore loser.

Colonel Bernado/GSG-101 Beatrice
Pros – Biccie’s units all have greater visual ranges in FOW situations
Cons – None
Unique Unit – ‘War Hound Tank’, a hunter tanks that have the movement and visual range of a Recon, but firepower of an MBT
CO-Power - 'Let's go a-hunting', FOW disappears and movement range of all units increases

--

Craziest Idea I’ve had in a while.

I'm hoping people will start posting what their OC's armies will be like on here.

Anyway, quick follow up...

The plot is a pretty craptastic; basically an excuse for the Prototype GSGs fighting to prove they can make the grade as real WMDs.

This involves them sending their robot clone armies against the special forces of various countries and each other in a series of war games, while their handlers/mentors attempt stop their one weakness, their personalities, from making each and every battle a farce.

And of course, somewhere along the line a war gets started for real by some unfortunate invading force who doesn't know what unspeakable horrors lie ahead for his men. The GSGs are pressed into service early, and suddenly the world will see something far more horrifying than a mushroom cloud; ten thousand identical P90 wielding adorable robot clones swarming over the invader's defence line; young girls dressed in pretty dressing raining unholy fire down on grown men too startled to shoot back.

Isn't much of a plot, but this is Advance Wars, you're in it for the gameplay right?

--

Other game features;

(1) Go shopping for different clothes for your GSG, whatever they're wearing into battle will effect their battle performance!

(2) Design your own GSG commander (duh)!

(3) Hilarious dialog and plot!

...

Rest of the features are unimportant.

LOL, Days of Ruin!

Whoa, Perro is miore vicious than I could have ever imagined... So much for the Bear Brigade.

Just realised I have a Naval specialist, but no Fighter specialist. I don't know any GSg who would like to fly, so picking an 'Eagle' to fight Claes' 'Drake' may be a bit tough.

Did anybody else here play Gadget Trial?

Haha, How did you make those Whatface? They're awesome! The quality is so good, I could actually mistake them for actual Days of Ruin screenshots.

The Bear Brigade reminds me of horde of armored Bonta-kuns. Perhaps that's what triela's heavy infantry units are wearing?

Now for one controvertial addition to the mix:

In line with the fact several COS in Advanced Wars are considered 'Broken' and 'Cheating Material', I give you...

SUPER COs

Colonel Allessandro Ricci/GSG-201 Petruska
Pros – Lower fuel consumption, when told to 'wait' her units become invisible as if they were 'hiding' in a forest or reef.
Cons – All her armored units have vastly inferior durability and firepower
Unique Unit – 'Infiltrator', expensive specialised infantry unit who can capture a property in one turn, but dies easily
CO-Power - 'Shadow Dancing', FOW rolls in if not already active, visibility range of all ememy units -1

GSX-4 Claes (Post Raballo)

Pros – Powerful Navy as before, but now land units have stronger counterattcks when told to hold their ground
Cons – Claes habitually fails at killing things, leaving enemies at 1HP when they should be dead
Unique Unit(s) –
‘Fishing Boat Class’, (see above)
'Garderners', cheap infantry armed with gardening equipment, they have an 'aura' that resupplies all ajacent friendly units at the start of every turn
CO-Power - 'Death Glare Glasses', repairs and refuels all naval units to full strength, Enemy CO power gauges empty from fear caused by Claes' opaque glasses thing.

Its quite simple really. First I collect all the images I need and get the required screenshots from my hax0red Days of Ruin (most painful & time consuming part). Then its all about putting images together in photoshop & making minor edits. Pretty easy to emulate Days of Ruin style graphics since all you have to do is put outlines around them.

Guh? Petra a super CO?!
"Pole Dancing" is more like it. All enemy units gawk at Petra and miss a turn.

You know who I'd like to see as a CO? Pino. I know he's not a GSG but I reckon it'll be pretty interesting. Maybe he could be from another army.

Btw Nacht, you manage to play some Advance Wars yet?

Nice... too bad I don't use Photosjop, or I'd jump right on the Advance Wars screenshot bandwagon with you. As it is, all I can do is type.

@Whatface wrote: Guh? Petra a super CO?!

She is completely broken isn't she? Just like how Yuu made her. Completely, absolutely broken, regarded by the forum members as a cheat machine. Might be fun to use tho' since she IS a 'setalth' model of sorts.

You think I should have made her troops amphibious? I thought we deterimed her little escapades wityh her beau meant she could hold her breath for a very long time.

@Whatface wrote:You know who I'd like to see as a CO? Pino. I know he's not a GSG but I reckon it'll be pretty interesting. Maybe he could be from another army.
Actually I have plans for him.

If any of you played Gadget Trial, remember the mission when the heroines were given 'mock enemy troops that look just like the real thing' to shoot at in a live fire exercise? One of the easiet missions in the game resulting in a very quick (and bloody) rout for the protagonists?

I remember the dialoge went something like this:

Souka (fighter commander)*laughing* - "This is too easy, it's like shooting fish in a barrel! if only the real continental army was this easy to beat."

Izen (infantry commander)- "Wow, the brass really put on a show for us! These mock tagets are sooo lifelike! Even their death throes seem so real!"

Meanwhile back at the base, The Colonel just recived news from his Superior officer that the enemy had actually invaded, and the continental army's elite troops were about to pass through the island they were using as a testing ground.

The Colonel looks out into the battle field, and sees the 'mock targets' fleeing with very real terror etched in their faces. His comanding occicer tells him that the prototypes he has won't stand a snowballs chance against a real, hardened veteran army, and they should get the hell out. All the Colonel and his staff can do is nod dumbly at the general, knowing at that very moment, dozens of the continental army's finest are getting carved up just a few kilometers from them.

Funniest moment of the game I tell you, right above the 'Indiscriminate Weapons of Killing' discussion.

Egad, LoC. Your little comment gave me an idea for a GSG related EROGAME, with 'Sandro as the main character. I'm tyring to get rid of it right now becuase it is SO WRONG.

One silver lining; It's an Erogame with a School Days type ending. I.e, Bad End is realllly bad.

You know those bears remind me of a picture I saw on the Renderosity site.

It was mechanical teddy bear that opens up & expands to become a BGC Motoslave styled mobile suit that someone can strap into.

I'd give a link to the picture but I can't for two reasons.

One: I forgot which artist has it. bang head

And two: it has nudity & I think that is a no, no on this site. study

Looks like a fun game, but until I pick up a 86x core apple doesn't look like I'll be playing it. I must confess thought that kind of game appeals to me greatly. Now I'm going to have to go look around for an alternative.

Also noticing that I've some how avoided commented on this yet. 1) Nifty idea as always. 2) Comics = funny 3) I want to see the Britney, and Biff team. Britney's units are 75% likely to attack nearby units. Biff's CO power kills every enemy unit in 2-3 squares radius. [they hit my with a truck!]

You forgot to mention Biff's CO power not only kills every enemy unit in a 2-3 square sadius, but halves the HP of every unit other than is own outside that radius. And lets not forget, as long as he has a first strike opportunity, it's always a OHKO.

I found the pic but I was mistaken it was a robocat not a robobear .

Although the cat does look like a robo teddy bear & it does still becomes a exo-skeleton suit I don't think it will work for the girls maybe it would work for Ferro (due to Vol. 2, pg 119) as a SOG/LRRP Unit but not the girls.

What sort of tatics and strategies would the GSGs employ if they were military commanders? Given that they'd be commanding huge armies of at least 10,000 robots strong in this situation, I'd think military strategy is an all important point to be addressed here.

-=-

Henrietta would be a staright forward 'though the front door right in your face' kind of girl. Eager to prove herself to her handler, she sends wave upon wave of troops upon the enemy, hoping achive an early victory to (a) please Jose, and (b) have some spare time to catch an ice cream.

Bet she commandson foot next to her infantry or if she has tem, squad bikes cause she wants to get at the ememy quicker and finish the battle faster.

-=-

Triela... I really have no idea. I know she's hothneaded and all, but that girl is smart when she wants to be. perhaps she's a commander who likes a straight up right. I think she'd be one of those flexible commanders with a taste in massed firepower (huge blinkimng army marcing across the plain). Besides, she can't yell her war cry 'Bear Brigade, Advance!' when there are only two dudes next to her.

Triela would (obviously) command from the biggest, baddest, thank she could find. She would then hang her standard from it.

-=-

Since she goes fishing and gardening, I picture Claes to be a patient commander with a desposition to ending the conflicts with as little losses as possible. She'd pass up chances to deal crippling blows to the ememy if she felt the losses to THEM were unacceptable. Civilian losses are taboo in her book. Perhaps she even keep a team of specially trained assassins with her to take out the emey commander...

Claes commands from her HQ, where her garden is, or one of her Naval vessels, where she can go fishing when there is a lull in the action.

-=-

I'll leave the rest for discussion.

One exception though; Elsa shoots her second in command everytime there is a swing in the battle against her, and 'promotes' someone else to take the poor sod's place.

A turn based startegy game is quite different from a game of Rick, but I do see where you are coming from.

So... Rico will steamroll everybody without a shread of mercy eh?

Re: Advance Wars, GSG style

Post by Sheo Darren on Wed 25 Jun 2008 - 2:43

lol Nice game lol Kyon VA lol

*brain percolating*

Let me try.

Rolito Miranda/CHILD UNIT 01 Giuseppe

Pros – All units have superior statistics to their
contemporaries unless said contemporary specializes in that stat (ex. Triela’s
armor is still superior to Giuseppe). They also have 'ECS', which when
activated makes them invisible for a short while before needing to cool down.
Finally, if a unit is lighter than its opponent (ex. Giuseppe's Recon Vehicle
vs an MBT), then it has a chance to Withdraw from battle before the enemy can
shoot it.

Cons – No Artillery or Heavy units (MBT, Naval Battleship, Aircraft
Carrier, Bomber). All direct combat units have shorter range than contemporaries.
Fuel consumption is also higher, especially when ECS is used.

Unique Unit – Arm Slave - powerful MBT supplement. Extremely
high mobility and decent armor. It can cover any ground terrain. Short weapons
range. Also has ECS.

CO-Power - 'Jammer' - Enemy suffers complete FOW for several
turns. Withdraw ability for Giuseppe's forces becomes automatic, even against enemy
units of equal weight, so a Recon Vehicle can now escape from an enemy Recon
Vehicle.

Summary - Giuseppe is blindingly fast and very hard-hitting,
but needs to close in to do damage. Recon Vehicles to find the enemy, ECS to allow
direct combat units to get close, 'Jammer' to blind the enemy when most needed,
and most especially TIMING are required to get the most out of him.

Ideally, his Commander should use feints and ambushes to
draw the enemy out into the open. Once enemy lines are overextended,
overwhelming attacks on the vulnerable flanks may open the way for a lightning
blitz straight to enemy HQ.

Optionally, systematic destruction of piecemeal enemy field
forces will take longer but is less risky. String them out, then surround and destroy
them.

His units' superior stats partly offset the fact that
Giuseppe has poor range and lacks any heavy unit, including Artillery. The
Withdraw ability does allow him to preserve his units against slow-footed opponents.
Use wave after wave of his light and medium units to systematically peel apart individual
enemy heavies, relying on superior mobility to close in on long-range shooters.

Strategies Against The Others - Henrietta is easily
outmaneuvered due her reliance on slow and vulnerable infantry. Beware, though;
while your units can easily win outright or Withdraw against her, her numerous
infantry can bog you down or even box you in if you are careless- and against
an opponent with Artillery who knows where you are, the battle may very well
turn into a slaughter of your forces.

Triela needs to be taken out as early as possible. She has
better range than you do (everyone else has better range than you!), and direct
units that can hold their own against yours in a one-on-one basis. Once she
builds up her momentum, she's well-night unbeatable. Rush her ASAP to ruin her
plans, using superior numbers of light units and stats to carry the day.

Rico's units vastly outrange yours. Do not let yourself get
caught out in the open. Close in as much as possible, using your speed and
terrain for cover, and you will have better than a chance of defeating her. Sadly,
her glaring weakness at naval combat is almost matched by your own incapacity
in that arena since you lack the heavyweight ships that would otherwise easily
make the difference in the match.

Both versions of Claes can be handled in a relatively
straightforward manner, provided you have enough subs to take away her naval
advantage and overwhelm her ground forces before they can counterattack (for
her second version). Her peculiar sense of mercy allows you to risk units
against her that you would otherwise never throw at anyone else; so long as
your unit is lighter than hers and has 1 HP, it can always Withdraw from
battle.

Angie's earthshaking firepower will make short work of your
units if you are discovered. Fortunately, her supply-hungry forces cannot sustain
her momentum. Bait her big guns with light units, using Withdraw to toy with
them, and then hit her with your best while she's reloading.

The difficulty with Elsa lies in the fact that your units
have the worst range in the game. Hence, her suicide bombers will take your units
with them if you're not careful. Otherwise, play to your strengths.

Beatrice has the easiest time finding your forces, especially
when her Let's Go A-Hunting catches your units out of ECS. It comes down to who
is fastest at getting the most anywhere. Biccie's speedy and powerful War Hound
Tank will be trouble, as its speed allows it to keep up with your fast ground
units that would have otherwise Withdrawn from battle.

Locating Petra's forces is your primary concern. Getting ambushed may prove to be
frustrating to someone who is used to being the ambusher. Once you do find her, she
is relatively easily to defeat, though you must beware her CO Power.

So how do you like it? It's petty funny, and quite addicting. So have you played it long enough to know what's your favourite unit? Mine's uniform fighter Souka (the cheap one). My usual strategy is to churn out like six of her A.S.A.P. and win air superiority as quickly as possible. As long as she gets the first hit in, the lower defence isn't a problem.

Maid suit bomber Souka FTW! She can 1 hit KO a tank if its on 0 defence terrain. But yeah, at the start I still build a bunch of uniform fighters the for taking down air units and scouting. Usually near the end of the match I have so many air units that I fail to keep track of them all, and some of them end up crashing due to 0 energy. Razz If only they had a running out-of-fuel icon like in Advance wars...

I felt the bombers, with proper fighter escort, was just broken. With the soddy AA units in this game, once I had control of the air it was just game over for the sucker.

What did you think of the other units? I thought the 'Indiscriminate Weapons of Killing' (Souka especially) were damn powerful... but most of the land vehicles, artillery especially, were next to useless becuase of the bombers (Nei could be usefulif you got the right costumes for her Recon and Tank forms). As for Izen the infantry, I just mass produced her and stormed the enemy, massed firepower and numbers carrying the day.

@Whatface wrote:Usually near the end of the match I have so many air units that I fail to keep track of them all, and some of them end up crashing due to 0 energy. Razz If only they had a running out-of-fuel icon like in Advance wars...
Never had that problem. I rotated my airforce very often and made a rule of the thumb; number of properties * 1.5 = size of my air fource. At any one time, a quater of my air force as grounded (mostly fighters in awaiting targets). Bombers would only have a few turns at the front before needing re-fuel, but with the rotation I could make it seem like I had a sizeable fomber force at the front at any one time. Does this help?

My causalties mainly stemmed from my Izen's getting ripped to pieces on the front lines (Nei Panzers were too slow... should have put her in a cowboy outfit). Poor Izen...

--

Now, for a fun character not meant of serious play at all.

Nathan McDouglas/GSG-3023 Victoria McDouglas

Pros – Far, far stronger units in general; she's third generation AND a gun-kata practioner. Better yet, she always attacks first even when she isn't the aggressor and even when she is ambushed! However, all this power comes with one rather annoying problem...

Cons
– Unless she uses her CO power, she can't kill anything. Becuase of her annoying 'curse' Victoria can't deviver a killing blow, leaving a ton of 1HP enemies in front of her battle lines (blocking her path to victory) that just won't go away. Ohh err... that could be a problem. On top of that, all her units cost an arm and a leg to build, meaning Vcitoria often goes in outnumbered by at least 2-1.

Unique Unit
– The Gunslinger, a poweful counterattack capable indirect fire unit that can fire on any target. It's unique in that attacks twice in a single turn becuase it dual wields(once before the counterattack, and once after). To top it off, it looks like a regular infantry unit, so poor suckers dunno what their getting into when they shoot at it!

...still can't kill anything with it though.

CO-Power - 'Gloves come off'. A.k.a. 'FINALLY!'
This essential CO Power simply releases Victoria from her 'curse' for one turn (that's the number 1). Simple as that. Now all she has to do is chew through that huge horde of 1HP enemies in front of her... oh dear, she only has ten units... Victoria's not going to get very far...

Strategy;

It's fairly obvious someone unsing 'rush tatics', like Henrietta, is going to mess up Victoria royally. Because she can't finish off her enemies, an inpenetrable wall of 1HP enemies will build up in front of her small army, make it difficult for Victoria to advance. Worse yet, even a dozen 1HP infantry squads will bring down the mightiest tank eventually. For Victoria, it's a race against time and numbers to strategically time her CO-power every few trunes to deliver a massive orgy of bloodshed upon enemies. She has to be careful though, her enemies can easily scoot around her noticibly smaller main force to become a dislodgeable infestation in territories she controls. Victoria is a difficult, but rewarding character to play.

Strong Against - Guiseppe (can't be ambushed), Petra (can't be ambushed), Angelica (the wall to 1HP troops will run out of gas sooner or later), Rico (counterattack capable indirect fire unit!),

Weak Against - Henrietta (oh nom nom nom!), Elsa (Viccy can't stop them suicide bombers), Triela (Bear Brigade numbers>Gunslingers), Post Raballo Claes (CO power --> negated!)

Yup, exactly what I thought/do. Artillery is just damn usless, I actually have to TRY and get her kills. Nei is pretty good if you could get her units to the front. What costume does your scout wear?

Its not like I don't know how to rotate. I just forget to check the energy thats all. Well used to anyway, I dont have that problem now.

Ninja costume I think. It's been a while since I played it. I tend to use the uniforms whenever I can tho'. I'm pretty good at making up for a loss in firepower and defence for most units.

Oh LOL!! Rico's range is near-infinite!!

William Koch/G-2PRTYPE Frederick H. Koch

Pros – Agility, fire-power, and armor combined to one. Full mobility and fire-power. All of Frederick's unit are well balanced and is capable on creating massive damage in small numbers.

Cons – Frederick's units tends to waste more supplies and ammunition on the field, requiring constant attention and resupply

Unique Unit – 'Sturmtruppe'; elite troopers armed with a variety of weapon ranging from light assault rifles to heavy MGs. Equipped with Anti-Armor capability and camouflage, making it an excellent ambush unit.

CO-Power - BLITZKRIEG
Frederick's unit can fire three-times and can move twice in a turn, dealing more damage yet suffers 30% more damage taken.

Strategy - A rusher type player can rush their units and move them into combat immediately.

...somehow that's all I can think of right now..

Hey, but at least they came in numbers :p

On the con, Frederick's unit is actually weak against heavily armored units like Triela's Bear Brigades or Claes' navy. Frederick is more of an early game faction where it dominates early.

Late game, don't count it to be as easy as before as his well-balanced unit would mostly be over-powered ^^

Just realised that Pino can be the young colonel who was the first human Co ever to best a GSG army in battle (Triela's of course). What say you guys? being a human and all, his people whould operate on an entirely different set of rules than the GSG armies, with veterancy levels and a lower 'reinforcement rate'.

Perhaps to offset the 'weakness of the flesh', Pino should have a full set of asskicking CO powers? He can't pop out as many soldiers as a GSG can, his men can't take the same punishment a GSG can, so they MUST have something they can fight back with.

Either that, or Pino is just THAT good a commander.

-=-

Nobody's discussed a pure airforce bruiser yet. I mean, air dominance is normally my preferred strategy, so right now if I jump into this game I'm gonna be a walking in with a real handicap.

Somebody draw up a flyboy (or is it fly-girl?) quick!
