Gun-Kata and Gun-Martial Arts

Post by sasahara17 on Sat 14 Jun 2008 - 9:34

Given how interesing this topic was, i thought it be best if I popened an entirely new thread for it. Everything and anything to do with pure awesome goes in here.

--

"Through analysis of thousands of recorded gunfights, the Cleric has determined that the geometric distribution of antagonists in any gun battle is a statistically-predictable element. The Gun Kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents, while keeping the defender clear of the statistically-traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increased lethal proficiency makes the master of the Gun Katas an adversary not to be taken lightly."

Gun-kata 'styles'

--

One thing I noticed on the wiki page of Equilibrium was how the directors of Equilibrium (and thus the creator od the 'in-movie' style) disagreed on the 'syle' of the martial art to be implemented the in movie. This made me wonder... how many distinct 'styles' of 'gun-kata' are there really? Do they even exist?

I think they do, and I know of three distinct styles/preferences of using two sidearms to kill a whole lot of enemies.

‘Dancing’ Style

Gun-kata style with an emphasis on movement; the practitioner makes rapid, but calculated, movements to confuse the enemy in addition to avoiding return fire. This style is flashy, flamboyant, and normally used by someone looking to show off in a big way or using some form of close range weapon. Either that, or they like breakdancing (The Big Hit).
Examples; DMC - Dante normally likes moving a whole lot when using Ebony and Ivory in the cutscenes and anime
Ultra Violet - Violet moves like crazy to confuse her foes... and makes them suffer multiple cases of freiendly fire

'First Strike' Style
Gun-kata style with an emphasis on first strike; the practitioner focuses their efforts in positioning themselves in a position to strike every enemy before they can even pull the trigger. This style seems to gravitate to those gunslingers who just want to get the job done quckly, moving to an optimal striking position, even if they expose themselves to a little risk
Example; Madness Combat - Hank hits the vast majority of his enemies before they can even fire at him.

‘Strategy’ Style
Gun-kata style with an emphasis on positioning; the practitioner strategizes their moment to place himself at the optimum stance to both maximize his hit zone while simultaneously avoiding return fire. This style is all about positing your body as not to get hit since you don't move as much as the other two.
Example; Equilibrium - Preston shifts stances as he advances down the hall way shooting his enemies.

I wouldn't limit the number of styles exclusively to the three I've noticed. These are just the ones I've found most common in the media I've watched. I'm sure there are more out there.

@Nachtsider wrote:No way in hell a Gun Kata exponent can completely avoid being hit.
This actually has some merit.

Against most common mooks, a Gun-kata master is almost impossible to hit becuase of his movements. Almost impossible as opposed to completely impossible, since there is the odd occation that a practitioner is wounded by some lucky idiot with a gun (or just Hank J Wimbleton). Remember the above statement says the 'traditional trajectories of return fire', which means anyone firing outside of the normal these 'traditional trajectories' by trying some insane stunt stands a good chance of hitting the practitioner. 'Sides you can always catch Mr/Mrs Invincible off guard.

On another note, I read that there was a real life sport of Gun-kata involving close combat like in the fight in Equilibrium. Anyone ever seen it?

Hank? Gun-kata? I always thought of him as more of a Rambo guy.

Aww comeon, its just fiction. Look at how Preston moves down the hallway. Sure he changes his stances, but he still advances in straight line. Surely he would've gotten hit if someone actually aimed? I mean, he wasn't moving that much.

There's a choreographed fight on YouTube, and I read something about a real-life version of close-quarters gun combat sport online. (Someone also pointed out that soldiers are trained to pull their gun away and shoot, not keep it were it can be knocked around.)

@ Nile, oops caught out. I should have said stormtroopers, not mooks. Anyway, I'll go sit with a dunce cap in the corner now : ).

SAS people are trained to draw their sidearm, hit their targets, then immediately holster their gun again in one swift set of moments. Draw,bang-bang, holster.

That's what that exhibit in the Edinbrugh castle told me anyway.

Well, Gun-kata is a direct byproduct of Gun-Fu, so I suppose if that's the case we can go talk about John Woo flicks too.

I watched Equilibruim once, and only once. For fear that watching it again might reveal a movie less awesome then I remember from the first viewing. Anyway, yeah Gun-Kata is nifty. Falls along the same likes of wire-fu to me, only you know with more guns then punches. Which works pretty well for the movie. In all likely hood the inclusion of Gun-Kata would make anything better, much like Ninjas would.

@ Ryuu

*trying hard to to laugh too loud*

What an insult Ryuu! Show the poor men in white some respect!

Stormtroopers can shoot the side of a Deathstar! It'll take a battilion of their best marksmen and a lot of blasters to do it, but they hyave to hit something (eventually) right?

--

@ Whatface

Hm, I'm pretty sure Hank knows Gun-kata, or at least a varation of it. It's never said, but he has used many moves that Preston exhibited in the movie, including the pistols as small warhammers bit in Madness 4 and the spinning backflip shot(s).

if he really is a practitioner of Gun-fu, Gun-kata, or whatever, he is probably one of the best I've ever seen.

Anyone has other possible Gun-kata practitioners? Fabiola from BL might be one since she is a known 'martial artist'... however I'm probably just wishing on this one.

--

Hm, What's the best gun to use with Gun-kata? Preston uses Berettas, Dante has Ebony and Ivory (whbich I'm guesseing are completely custom), don't know what Violet was using and hank seems to like Deagles.

I'm going with Berettas.

One last thing; Anybody watched 'Shoot 'Em Up'? The one with Clive Owen? I heard it was good, but haven't seen it myself yet.

Shoot 'Em Up is made of awesome with some humor on the side, but I don't see an example of Gun-kata there. Just one guy who is an extremely excellent shot and damn good at improvising.

I'm not sure about using a six shot revolver for gun-kata. Most practicioners use alot of ammo very, very, quickly...

Then again, you could reload so fast in a crazy badass fasion, it won't matter much (Nero from DMC).

I'm not sure about the pointy bit at the end tho'. Most styles of gun-kata don't involve getting close to the enemy, but for the styles that do I'm sure I'll be invaluable then. Just can't think of one right now.

If I was a Gun Kata practitioner and I got close to my opponents I would want to use a katana; it would just be cooler. For bonus points I might use Preston's underhand style for a while--but only for a while, because swinging the sword with your palm up is not too comfortable.
