Beethoven´s 9th Symphonie

Post by Triela-Chan on Tue 12 Aug 2008 - 8:36

Okay I thought I should post the Lyric of Beethoven´s 9th Symphonie here, because the girls sang it in the 2nd Volume and the Anime...
Well... Here it´s the 9th Symphonie!

GERMAN

Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
was die Mode streng geteilt:
alle Menschen werden Brüder,
wo dein snafter Flügel weilt.

Wem der grosse Wurf gelungen,
eines Freundes Freund zu sein,
wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
weinend sich aus diesem Bund!

Freude trinken alle Wesen
an den Brüsten der Natur,
alle Guten, alle Bösen
folgen ihrer Rosenspur.
Küsse gab sie uns und Reben,
einen Freund, geprüft im Tod;
Wollust ward dem Wurm gegeben,
und der Cherub steht vor Gott.

Froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen
durch des Himmels prächt'gen Plan,
laufet, Brüder, eure Bahn,
freudig, wie ein Held zum Siegen!

Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
was die Mode streng geteilt:
alle Menschen werden Brüder,
wo dein snafter Flügel weilt.

Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, überm Sternenzelt
muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.

Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such ihn überm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muss er wohnen.

Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt!
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such ihn überm Sternenzelt!
Brüder, überm Sternenzelt
muss ein lieber Vater wohnen!

Freude, Tochter aus Elysium,
deine Zauber binden wieder,
was die Mode streng geteilt!
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,
wo dein sanfter Flügel Weilt.

Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuss der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, überm Sternenzelt
muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.

Freude, schöner Götterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium,
Freude, schöner Götterfunken!

And now in ENGLISH

Praise to Joy, the God-descended
Daughter of Elysium!
Ray of mirth and rapture blended,
Goddess, to thy shrine we come.
By thy magic is united
What stern Custom parted wide,
All mankind are brothers plighted
Where thy gentle wings abide.

Ye to whom the boon is measured,
Friend to be of faithful friend,
Who a wife has won and treasured,
To our strain your voices lend!
Yea, if any hold in keeping
Only one heart all his own,
Let him join us, or else weeping,
Steal from out our midst, unknown.

Draughts of joy, from cup o'erflowing,
Bounteous Nature freely gives
Grace to just and unjust showing,
Blessing everything that lives.
Wine she gave to us and kisses,
Loyal friend on life's steep road,
E'en the worm can feel life's blisses,
And the Seraph dwells with God.

Glad as the sun His will sent plying
Through the vast abyss of space.
Brothers run your joyous race,
Hero-like to conquest flying

O ye millions, I embrace ye!
With a kiss for all the world!
Brothers, o'er yon starry sphere
Surely dwells a loving Father.

O ye millions, kneel before Him,
World, dost feel thy Maker near?
Seek Him o'er yon starry sphere,
O'er the stars enthroned, adore Him!

Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Joy, daughter of Elysium
Thy magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;
All men will become brothers
Under thy gentle wing.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Joy, beautiful spark of Gods!,
Daughter of Elysium,
Joy, beatiful spark of Gods!.

In the context of GSG, it would be Angie.

It never fails to amaze me, how well-translated those English lyrics are.

I found this in Wikipedia:

In Greek mythology, Elysium (Greek: Ἠλύσια πεδία) was a section of the Underworld (the spelling Elysium is a Latinization of the Greek word Elysion). The Elysian Fields, Elysian Plains or Fields of Asphodel, were the final resting place of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous

Elysium is an obscure and mysterious name that evolved from a designation of a place or person struck by lightning, enelysion, enelysios. This could be a reference to Zeus, the god of lightning, so "lightning-struck" could be saying that the person was blessed (struck) by Zeus (lightning). Scholars have also suggested that Greek Elysion may instead derive from the Egyptian term ialu (older iaru), meaning "reeds," with specific reference to the "Reed fields" (Egyptian: sekhet iaru / ialu), a paradisaical land of plenty where the dead hoped to spend eternity

The ruler of Elysium varies from author to author; Pindar names the ruler as Kronos, released from Tartarus and ruling in a palace:

And those that have three times kept to their oaths,
Keeping their souls clean and pure,
Never letting their hearts be defiled by the taint
Of evil and injustice,
And barbaric venality,
They are led by Zeus to the end:
To the palace of Kronos

Other authors claim that Kronos remained in Tartarus for all eternity, and the judge was another, sometimes Rhadamanthys.

In Elysium where fields of the pale liliaceous asphodel, and poplars grew, there stood the gates that led to the house of Ais (in Attic dialect "Hades").

In Virgil's Aeneid, Aeneas, like Heracles and Odysseus before him, travels to the underworld. Virgil describes an encounter in Elysium between Aeneas and his father Anchises. Virgil's Elysium knows perpetual spring and shady groves, with its own sun and lit by its own stars: solemque suum, sua sidera norunt (Aeneid, 6.541).In Elysium where fields of the pale liliaceous asphodel, and poplars grew, there stood the gates that led to the house of Ais (in Attic dialect "Hades").

Where soothing breezes off the Ocean
Breathe over the Isle of the Blessed:
All around flowers are blazing with a
Dazzling light:
Some springing from the shining trees,
Others nourished by the water from the sea:
With circlets and garlands of flowers they
Crown their hands,
Ruled by the steadfast councils of
Rhadamanthys:
Rhadamanthys,
The great Judge,
Whom the Father,
The husband of Rhea,
Whose throne is higher than all:
The great Father keeps him by his side,
His loyal advisor.
Peleus and Kadmos both are there,
And Akhilleus, brought there by his mother,
After she had conquered the heart of Zeus with her
Prayers

Rather long...

I can play this on piano Very Happy
One of the easiest pieces I know, it's just the main tune with some simple chords on the bass clef.

The Eagle

He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
Close to the sun in lonely lands,
Ring'd with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
He watches from his mountain walls,
And like a thunderbolt he falls.

So long as you stick with the main bar, it's easy to pick up.

It's when you try going off the main chord's and 'dramaticizing' it that it starts to get nervewracking.

Kinda like when people try to emphasize the lyrics of "God knows..." into their instrumentals.

9th symphony

Post by taraswizard on Wed 26 May 2010 - 15:53

Smile OK, I read on the interwebs somewhere that in Japan, in addition to the previous statement, that Beethoven's 9th is associated with the Christmas season. How did that happen, can anyone tell us more about that? Consider that the theme is constantly recurring during most of the playing time of Satoshi Kon's Tokyo Godfathers, and that is a Christmastime drama.

Ode to Joy?
What about it?

It just shows that the girls are well educated in the arts, and as we seen in the Anime- in other areas as well.

Although, I first saw the anime before reading the manga.

I thought Ode to Joy was a fantastic send-off to Angelica. what had me choked up especially was Marco reading her "The Pasta Story" and then soon after starting, asking Angelica if she was awake. It was subtle, subliminal, and excellent storytelling.

In that stupid forum that eventually banned me for being myself- many there thought that Angelica died at the end of the first season of the anime. Even after I showed them V3, showing that she lived, they still argued that she died... morons thay are, but Yu did do a convincing death scene there for her.

It is a beautiful "death" scene. I thought Angie died at the end of the anime, until I read the manga. Although, since the anime and manga are different, and don't necessarily follow exactly the same story in every detail, I suppose you could argue that she died in the last episode. But I like to believe she lived.

Yu didn't "kill" her in the first anime, the writing staff did.

I'm still pretty convinced the only involvement Yu had with the first anime was cashing a licensing check.

I’m inclined to agree.

And yet the first season was still 100 times better that the second season. Kinda ironic...

Well Yu did actually write the episodes for -IL TEATRINO-, which is why it followed the manga far more closely than the first season did. I wonder if Yu might not have been a bit...put-off...by how the original writers just ran with the characters as they felt like (Lauro and Elsa being two huge "fan fic moments" plus "killing" Angelica) along with creating their own stories totally independent of the manga (the Lauro & Elsa arc plus the assault on the chalet).
