I'm starting to love this place (I've long since passed the "like" threshold.) Let's see:

"There can be only ONE!" - They only made one Highlander movie, and no TV show, right?

Also, they only made two Alien/Aliens films in my alternate timeline, correct? (Though 'Prometheus' looks promising.) And 'Gertrude', the working name for the xenomorph, never met the Predator. This one is going to be tough.

Lastly, Richard Pryor never set foot on a Superman movie, no? This last one probably shows how old I am...

Do you like the prequels only because Darth Maul was present, or do you like them on overall merit? Smile

I like Attack of the Clones, but that's about it. I find the confident, cocky Anakin an entertaining character and it is one of the reasons I really enjoy the Star Wars: The Clone Wars CG television series.

Seeing that you're a fan of double-bladed lightsabres, I'm not surprised you are anticipating the first film.

I like Darth Maul as well. In fact, I have a vinyl-cast figure of him on my bookcase at work. If anything, that's one more strike against TPM - they wasted him. Not just literally, but he was the best part of the show, and they removed him from the timeline (as well as the breathing). What a waste of a great character.

See? We're not all that different, Miss Cyborg-With-A-Short-Sword-For-A-Bayonet. Now, could you please put down that Trench Gun?

Saw Drive today, and was quite satisfied. I was just recommended the film not knowing what I was getting myself into.

Compared to the ADHD oriented Hollywood films that is shoved down the people's throats, the pacing felt just fine.

The Artist;
What's the cliché? Some movies add up to a sum greater than their individual parts...

In my opinion, this one is just the opposite. There are definitely great elements here...the musical score is perfect...the acting very good...and the cinematography was absolutely terrific at points (there are a few really inspired camera shots). Unfortunately, it's all held together by a story even my 92 year old Grandmother thought was paper-thin. Well, you can't win 'em all.

That said, this is still worth seeing as a creative homage to the end of the silent film era. Hell...it's worth seeing just for the dog.

Just a quick note to reassure everyone that I'm not buried underneath an avalanche - unfortunately, my lack of posting here lately can be explained by this movie-related tidbit: I brought out a wallet crammed with some fifty DVDs to entertain me over this season... in the past four months, I haven't so much as inserted a single one into the drive, let alone got round to watching it!

I hope to be back properly in mid-April, and catch up with the Agency's adventures then.

Time Traveller: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

This 2010 live action Japanese film is the sequel to the 1983 film Toki o Kakeru Shōjo, which itself was one of many adaptions of the 1967 novel by the same title. The R1 DVD was recently released and on sale, so I picked it up and had a chance to watch it this evening.

I absolutely love the 2006 anime adaption, even though the story of that film is inspired by the novel, as opposed to being based on it. I found this one to be immensely enjoyable, as well.

The lead was played by Riisa Naka, who provided the voice actress for the 2006 film's protagonist, Makoto Konno. In this film, she plays the role of Akari Yoshiyama, daughter of Kazuko Yoshiyama, who is the protagonist in the novel and the 1983 film.

My Thoughts on Battle Royale vs Mirai Nikki

I'm not sure whether to put this in the anime or films thread, so I'll just put it here.

I heard people talking about this on another forum, so I thought I would watch Battle Royale (and subsequently BR II... and read some of the manga) and give my thoughts on the issue.

As for the overall plot, I thought BR had a better plot, as far as it being a fight just to survive rather than, in the words of the Mirai Nikki Abridged version of Deus: "mutter mutter, I'm God, mutter mutter, Battle royale, mutter mutter, winner gets my job". I also thought the alternate history elements of the Battle Royale manga (and presumably the novel) were also interesting, though I was unsure whether in the BR universe, World War II never happened, or ended in Axis victory (the former seems more likely considering the widespread presence of American weapons.

That said, I would say Mirai Nikki had the more interesting cast of characters, particularly Minene Uryuu and Yuno Gasai. I particularly liked Minene with her tragic backstory, badass character, and her ironic become a god to destroy religion mission (and did i mention her awesome theme music!). That said, Battle Royale did have its interesting villain character in Kiriyama, the Uzi-toting sociopath who would be a good match for Yuno Gasai if she wasn't obsessed with Yuki! Not to mention, Shuya Nanahara, the main character of Battle Royale develops somewhat in BR II from the average teenager to the badass freedom fighter.

My Thoughts on Battle Royale vs Mirai Nikki

Can't speak of the latter, but BR was pretty good. I'm honestly not sure what all the fuss was really about over here regarding the movie. The fact that it's high-schoolers? The rest of the movie was good, but not great. The violence was almost PG-13. The characters flashed by pretty quick, really, and that's where I prefer the manga to the movie. Most of the characters are spelled out in great detail in the manga. Kiriyama was a fast-moving psychotic in the movie. In the manga, he was an unstoppable, emotionless, genuine sociopath genius. You spend the whole series seeing just how dangerous and out there he is, and you eventually find out why, and understand him. Mitsuko Souma was the same. All of the critical characters get their own back-stories that reveal who and why they are. Even the fast-kills get a decent mention in relation to their friends who last longer. Unfortunately, it's impossible to cram even the tiniest of those details into the movie. The level of violence and nudity in the manga was at times grotesque, by design I'm sure. Having read the manga first, I could actually identify and explain most of the characters to my friends as we watched the movies. I don't think Beat Takashi did his character justice, though. The manga one was quite a bit more evil.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Glocks are not the shit. Glocks can fail the same as any other gun. I've seen it personally, and have even heard first-hand accounts of something as basic as a slide-retaining pin snapping, the slide flying off. Get over the obsession and buy what fits your hand, your wallet, and ability.

Just got tickets to see The Devil's Carnival on the 26th of April. Made by the same people who created Repo the Genetic Opera. <3 It's going on tour and is only going to be in a city for a day, with only one or two screenings.

Since I got the VIP tickets I'm going to a meet and greet with the director Darren Lynn Bousman and actor/writer/singer/artist Terrance Zdunich who played Graverobber in Repo!! <33333

Saw The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel over the weekend, about a group of elderly British who decide to outsource their retirement to India. High highs, incredibly low lows and hilarious to boot with some of my favorite actors (Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Dame Judy Dench among them). Highly reccomended.

Here's something interesting...not sure if it should go here or the Motorsports thread. Some alleged spy footage of Ron Howard's upcoming F1 drama Rush.

This is taken from the footpath near Bergwerk on the old Nurburgring. A film crew is re-creating Niki Lauda's 1976 crash at the exact spot where it really happened, stuntmen playing the drivers who pulled Lauda from his flaming Ferrari. What I find odd is the stuntman wearing a lid that looks a lot like James Hunt...who was not actually present at the accident scene. Perhaps the film-makers are taking a few liberties with the story...or maybe I'm just wrong about the helmet.

it was Guy Edwards

It was the 1st of August on 1976 when Lauda lost Ferrari just before Bergwerk, bouncing back on the track and actually hitting Edwards' car when the Englishman came through the blazing inferno. He stopped and looked back and saw Lauda's car burning. In 1998 - twenty-two years on - Guy Edwards recalled the moment for Autosport magazine: "There he was. I could see him. I had time to get out of my car and run back and save him. It was a very difficult thing. Like the first time off a high diving board. Petrol fires are such awful things. This was a big one. The heat and noise were incredible. It was not a pretty sight at all. I was running towards the fire and I was thinking - do I really want to do this? The honest answer was 'no way'. But what could I do? Stop and walk back? Holy hell, it was a mess. Then for me it was all action. There were so many things to be done. I was aware of others around me. But the flames were so thick, I couldn't see the bastard. But I dived in and it was so hot and there was choking dust everywhere. I knew it was now or never and with a desperate sense or urgency, and help from more drivers, feeling quite desperate, we tried again. We were banging against each other, pulling, cursing and just struggling. His shoulder straps pulled away in my hand, and it was incredibly frustrating, and the heat was just so physical. I got hold of an arm and a good grip on his body and the little sod came out with all of us falling in a heap. We pulled him out like a cork from a bottle."

Guy also acknowledged a marshal and said: "If Lauda owed his life to any single factor, it was two hand-held extinguishers", but he also said it needed four men to pull him free and without the four men the extinguishers would have been in vain. The fellow rescuers were Brett Lunger, Harald Ertl and Arturo Merzario. Strangely Lauda never thanked Edwards for this. Guy actually also won an F1 race in 1976: the non-championship Oulton Park Gold Cup race in a Brabham BT42.

Yes...my question is; did one of the drivers present have a helmet similar to James Hunt, or have the film-makers played with history and added Hunt to the scene for sake of the story? The movie will focus mainly on the 1976 championship battle between Lauda & Hunt.

I'll have to go back and study the original film of the accident. Youtube is sometimes useful for something other than cat videos and watching idiots get hit in the nuts with skateboards.

Watched A Serbian Film again because one of our friends wanted to watch it. The uncut version... UGHHH MY EYES! D: ;_;

We also watched a movie called Black Sheep, which was about killer sheep. It was hilarious!

Last night I FINALLY watched Halloween for the first time, by myself, in the animation lab. I think I cried 5 or 6 times watching it. I hate the idea of stalkers, and that movie was just full of one of my worst fears. D: I was really scared while watching it and would totally watch it again! Time to get the second one! :3

Agreed...the one furthest to the right is clearly the one being worn by the movie stuntman and is not James Hunt.

You must really enjoy that film. I'll have to find a copy and show it to all my friends & family, on the strength of your recommendation
.

The 1978 John Carpenter original or the 2007 Rob Zombie re-make?

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol - While it seems clear that they will never recapture the awesomeness of the first movie, this one was a good bit more entertaining than MI:2 or MI:3.

Watched The Avengerslast night
(It was the first night it was open in Australia, you see), and I
really enjoyed it. As I found out from one of my mates later, it was
directed by Joss Whedon, the same bloke who did Fire Fly and Serenity.
I do like how he is able to add homour to a serious situation, but
still have it remain serious and not distract from anything else in the
film. Good movie.

Just got back from it now. Despite not involving any bowler hats, Bentlys or Lotus Elans, as far as brain-out super hero movies go: it's a pretty good one. I think one reviewer sumed it up nicely: "There's not much too it, and it basically goes "stuff blows up - posturing - funny one liner", over and over again; but you know what? It's done so amusingly I don't care."

Also, if they'd put Cobie Smulders in a S.H.I.E.L.D uniform more often, I probably wouldn't have lost interest in "How I Met Your Mother" quite so quickly...

So, just got back from seeing Iron Sky... umm... wow, not what I was expecting.

Ok, so for the most part it was everything I was expecting from a comedy movie about Space-Nazis-From-the-Dark-Side-of-the-Moon to be; uproarously funny with a good solid chunk of political satire thrown in and a neat diesel-punk aesthetic...

Spoiler:
...right up untill the last five minutes.

The ending...

Rarely have I seen an audience so quiet leaving the cinema.

Definately worth a look.

I've never played ME3, but the ending of Iron Sky is what made the movie for me. Otherwise it would have been just another funny political satire.

The gist of Mass Effect is that every choice you make has a consiquence, and then on the third game

the only effect on the game is if you did shit all and no side quests, the green galaxy is unavailible. You can see my rave about it on the Vidya Games!! thread, the last entry
